There seems to be a dearth of literature for brass quintet that addresses the folk songs of Israel. ? Mazel Tov! ? is an arrangement of several of these folk tunes. Included are: Chusen Kala Mazel Tov, Avinu Malkenu, Hasidic Waltz, Dodi Li, I have a Little Dreidel, Hatikvah and Hava Nagilla. Arranging this piece was a way for me to research and hear most of this music for the first time. It is very playable and a nice addition to any program. I hope you enjoy playing it. Sweeter the bells never sound a well-known German Christmas carol dating from the 19th century. The text is written to the German theologian and educator Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger (1816-1890). The melody comes from a Thuringian folk song before 1826. The song creates a hopeful and healing atmosphere. The bell sound is a symbol of peace, joy and Christmas joy. ?American Patrol? is the best-known work by Frank White (F.W.) Meacham (1856?1909), an arranger and composer associated with Tin Pan Alley, the home of New York City-based songwriters and music publishers who dominated the popular music of the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century. ?American Patrol? incorporates both original musical themes by Meacham and melodies from patriotic songs of the era such as ?Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean? and ?Dixie.? The ?patrol? format was popular in the latter 19th century, and was intended to represent a military band approaching, passing, and fading into the distance. It typically included an introduction played pianissimo or piano, in imitation of bugle calls or drums, then themes played progressively louder until a recapitulation of the first theme(s), gradually fading away and finishing softly, like the march began. I urge you to purchase this arrangement, as I'm confident you'll find that I've captured the essential elements, as well as the excitement, of Stevie's great song, and allowed the brass quintet to sound at its best. Professional quintets can really enjoy this arrangement, but it is also playable by good student quintets.
