The Confessions of St. Augustine is a solo for Unaccompanied Trombone written by Canadian violinist/composer Erika Raum. St. Augustine (of Hippo) was a 5th Century convert to Christianity who was one of the first philosophers and theologians of the faith. He went on to write a number of important works including the autobiographical work Confessions, a series of thirteen books outlining his sinful youth and eventual conversion to Christianity. Ms. Raum's music, in four sections features the following tabloids: Youth and Pagan Beginnings, The Mystical Voice of the Child in the Garden, St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, The Debate at the Baths of Sozius. This work is very expressive, with many contrasting sections and complex rhythms, and is rather moderate in range, being accessible to moderately advanced to advanced performers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810736). Respighi completed the 4-movement set of Biblical episodes entitled Church Windows in 1925. He actually composed the music first and then added the titles, dispelling any theory of specific religious fervor on his part, but rather having created a general mood with the music. St. Michael the Archangel, the battle-scene 2nd movement is about 6 minutes in length. Mr. Malmstrom has once again shown his talent for arranging large works for Trombone octet. It is appropriate for advanced performers. Printed in Canada.

Early versions used the word f’it for fought. The words harken to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, where Joshua led the Israelites to victory against Canaanite armies. Put into perspective, Joshua’s battle is really against slavery and the desire for freedom, like the themes of so many other spirituals from that era. This rousing arrangement in swing-style for 8-part Trombone ensemble by James Markey is about two minutes in length, featuring the 1st and 8th parts and is for advanced performers. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1111191). Gada Meiren Theme and Variation Fantasy is the most well-known trombone composition in China. It was originally written for solo trombone and orchestra (unpublished) by Chinese composer You Dao Ma (1915-2010). The composer adapted the Inner Mongolian folk song Gada Meiren, also the name of the Inner Mongolian hero. The trombone and piano version of this piece was first published in China in 1959. Gada Meiren Theme and Variation Fantasy is a single movement work that depicts a story with four distinct parts. Part one: The repressed emotions of the Inner Mongolian people under the ruler. Gada Meiren led his people to fight against the ruler to protect their home and land. Part two: Gada Meiren's nostalgia for his homeland and people when fighting away from home. Part three: Gada Meiren's death in the battle. People mourned their hero with great sadness. Epilogue: People's remembrance and praise for their hero Gada Meiren, carrying his spirit moving forward. Taken from the 1959 version, this new edition of Gada Meiren Theme and Variation Fantasy for solo Trombone and Piano has fixed notation errors, added dynamics, articulations, tempo (bpm) markings, rearranged the piano score and solo part. All original Chinese terms in scores are translated into western standard musical terms. The solo is about 9.5 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.
