Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767280). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory scena, which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna and there is a second named group Sestina. This song, No 12, translates as Betty, who cried, was imprisoned by Chloris the shepherd while he hunted a deer. Needless to say, it was for romantic reasons! As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

This piece exists in its original form as a set of handwritten parts for the brass band of the Civil War era. This arrangement is in a lower key to keep the parts (especially) the trumpets in a reasonable tessitura. The original soprano brass instrument this was written for was the E-flat cornet which would put the modern B-flat trumpet into an uncomfortable range. This arrangement has alternate (Baritone Horn) parts for the Horn, Trombone & Euphonium.

Julius Katterfeldt was born in Wandsbek in 1813. Wandsbek was not yet part of Hamburg at that time. His father Johann Hinrich Katterfeldt was the organist at the famous Schnitger organ of Hamburg's main church St. Jakobi. He also gave his son first music lessons. Later he was a pupil of the famous Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt. Julius Katterfeldt was first organist at the church of St. Johannes in Eppendorf. In 1840, Katterfeldt was appointed by the Danish king to the post of cathedral organist in Schleswig. After the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848 to 1851) he had to give up his organist post at the cathedral. Friedrich von Reventlou (1797-1874) brought Katterfeldt to the monastery church in Preetz, where Renventlou was provost, because of the political quarrels over the county of Holstein. In Preetz he even had to take on sexton duties in addition to organ duties. After the war (Battle of Dybbøl/DK), Schleswig once again belonged to the Republic of Prussia. For this reason, the German Emperor had a new tower built for Schleswig Cathedral in 1864. It can be assumed that the church symphony by Julius Katterfeldt was composed for this purpose beforehand and was therefore later published by the renowned Berlin music publisher BOTE & BOCK. His Church Symphony Opus 18, for brassband and organ, is dedicated to the Prussian Emperor Wilhelm I. Katterfeldt’s Church Symphony is the first original symphonic work for the instrumentation organ and brass band. His son-in-law was the Schwerin cathedral organist George Hepworth (1825-1918). Through his contacts in England, some of J. It begins with Trumpet 1 playing the iconic opening guitar lick, then it moves into a reasonably faithful version of the song. At the third verse there is a deep reharmonization of the melody, then it moves into the end vamp with trumpet 1 and trombone soloing together. Very cool- and people will recognize it. Medium level of difficulty (a couple high notes in the trombone and french horn).

It has been arranged for 4-part brass ensemble (2 trumpets, French horn and trombone). It is still based and sounds like the original. This is Grade 1 in terms of technicality and rhythm but has got notes of top A's in the 1st Bb Cornet Part.I would recommend 2 players on a part as some parts are split for harmony reasons.
