Gabrieli: Sonata Pian e Forte, Ch. 175 for Trumpet & Trombone Choir

Brass Band Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1220622 Composed by Giovanni Gabrieli. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Instructional,Renaissance. Score and Parts. 45 pages. Jmsgu3 #816951. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1220622). A musical monument: the first composition to employ dynamics Minimum Instrumentation: 4 Trumpets, 2 Alto Trombones, 3 Tenor Trombones, 1 Bass Trombone, and 1 Tuba. Suggested instrumentation: 8 trumpets, 4 Alto Trombones, 6 Tenor Trombones, 2 Bass Trombones, 4 Tubas.InnovationsFirst of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style.Polychoral WorksGabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well.Spatial MusicAbove all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance.First WorksFinally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung.HomophonyHence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which he calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

Brass Ensemble Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813824 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Concert,Contemporary,Folk,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 18 pages. Regis Bookshar #6533897. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813824). Largo (from Symphony No. 9 in E minor) (From the New World) (Db) (Brass Quintet) - Intermediate - Digital Download. This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (18 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour. In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners. The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to this version for a Brass Quintet, but in this case, consisting of 3 Trumpets, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1419806 By Fiona Alice Hickie. By Fiona Alice Hickie. Arranged by Fiona Alice Hickie. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Latin. 17 pages. Fiona Alice Hickie #1001228. Published by Fiona Alice Hickie (A0.1419806). A piece for brass quintet based on the poem by the same name. It is a slow piece is a South American style.Based on the poem: Lyrics: 1. My roots once clung to the earth, The wind is calm the river still. As if nothing else survives. My world is empty, am I alive? From my limbs a fruit was plucked, Within its sheath my heart was tucked. Its seeds contained my unknown future, Inside a flesh so sweet and pure. 2. Would my seeds find a place to fall? Nice fertile ground so they'd grow tall. Or would they find some barren ground. Where no love or nurture can be found? Without the fruit my limbs were bare. An old tree nearby just stood and stared. Why should it stop and help the tree Who let its fruit be taken from thee. 3. About the charmer who took the fruit? Should he help to make them grow? Instead he walked right off the land. With barely a wave of his hand. He bit the apple as he walked away. Enjoying its flesh but did not stay. No care at all for the damage he’d done He took the heart from his loved one. 4. So grow another fruit you say. And yes that would be the logical way. But some trees grow abundant fruit. Small and nice without dispute. Others instead grow one to perfection. Round and sweet, on close inspection. But once it’s gone then that is all. Then no more shall ever fall. 5. I sit here on the barren hill, The wind is calm the river still. As if nothing else survives. The world is empty no soul survives. Dedicated to Ben van den Akker.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.746742 Composed by Charles W.A Ellerbrook, Daniel Adams Butterfield, Daniel Decatur Dan Emmett ( 1815 – 1904), and Valentine Vousden. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Contemporary,Multicultural,Patriotic,Traditional,World. 39 pages. Keith Terrett #2941995. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.746742). De facto Anthems of the Confederate States of America ''I Wish I Was in Dixie & Taps''- ''God Save the South No. 1'' - The Bonnie Blue Flag, ''God Save the South No. 2'', arranged for Brass Quintet & Percussion. The Confederate States of America (also referred to as The Confederacy or simply The South) had, like the United States at the time, several patriotic songs in use which could have been considered anthems, like Dixie, The Bonnie Blue Flag, and God Save the South, none of which were officially declared (possibly because declaring an official anthem wasn’t as important to a new nation then as it is now). God Save the South does have more of an anthemaic quality in the music and lyrics, and several publications of the song refer to it as a (or the) anthem, and was also the first song to be published in the Confederacy (which was subsequently published in at least nine editions).God Save the South was written by George H. Miles under the pseudonym Earnest Halphin, soon after the war started. Miles was a Marylander, a state that did not officially secede and join the confederacy, but, being a border state, had several citizens with sympathies for the south. An interesting thing to note about the song is the reference to George Washington (the first president of the United States) in the song’s fifth verse. Apparently, the author of the song meant to tie in Washington’s stance as a rebel against the British in the American revolution with the South’s rebellion against the northern United States in the civil war.The music was written by C. W. A. Ellerbock, but another tune by C. T. De Cœniél was also popular at the time as well. Film/TV,Multicultural,Praise & Worship,Sacred,World. 9 pages. Keith Terrett #614983. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1009325). Nearer, My God, to Thee arranged for Brass Quartet, is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it…. The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1446054 Composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck,. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Instructional,Opera. 16 pages. Keith Terrett #1025876. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1446054). Orfeo ed Euridice is an opera composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, based on the myth of Orpheus and set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi. It belongs to the genre of the azione teatrale, meaning an opera on a mythological subject with choruses and dancing. The piece was first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 5 October 1762, in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa. Orfeo ed Euridice is the first of Gluck's reform operas, in which he attempted to replace the abstruse plots and overly complex music of opera seria with a noble simplicity in both the music and the drama. The opera is the most popular of Gluck's works, and was one of the most influential on subsequent German operas. Variations on its plot—the underground rescue mission in which the hero must control, or conceal, his emotions—can be found in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Beethoven's Fidelio, and Wagner's Das Rheingold.Though originally set to an Italian libretto, Orfeo ed Euridice owes much to the genre of French opera, particularly in its use of accompanied recitative and a general absence of vocal virtuosity. Indeed, twelve years after the 1762 premiere, Gluck re-adapted the opera to suit the tastes of a Parisian audience at the Académie Royale de Musique with a libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline. This reworking was given the title Orphée et Eurydice, and several alterations were made in vocal casting and orchestration to suit French tastes.Ther picture is Count Francesco Algarotti, an Italian polymath, philosopher, poet, essayist, anglophile, art critic and art collector. He was a man of broad knowledge, an expert in Newtonianism, architecture and opera. He was a friend of Frederick the Great and leading authors of his times: Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens, Pierre-Louis de Maupertuis and the atheist Julien Offray de La Mettrie. Lord Chesterfield, Thomas Gray, George Lyttelton, Thomas Hollis, Metastasio, Benedict XIV and Heinrich von Brühl were among his correspondents.''The Sicilienne and Rigaudon is one of the many pieces that violin virtuoso Fritz Kreisler composed in the style of other composers. When he first presented and published these pieces, he offered them as recently discovered works by those other composers, newly adapted and arranged by himself. In the case of Sicilienne and Rigaudon, it is eighteenth-century French violinist/composer François Francoeur whose name is on the title sheet, though the piece really has nothing to do with Francoeur's style. The piece is a simple and a charming one, however. The Sicilienne is a binary-form miniature that sweeps along on a characteristic dotted rhythm, with a rather melancholy melody. Think old French ballet. The constant 16th notes of the Rigaudon, give it a character quite unlike that of a traditional rigaudon-a cheerful Baroque dance movement in duple meter.

Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813571 Composed by Henry Purcell. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Instructional,Multicultural,Standards,World. Score and parts. 8 pages. Regis Bookshar #6429765. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813571). Brass Quintet - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. This arrangement of the Allegro movement from Henry Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. This particular arrangement is for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, and features the Trombone on the melody, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this piece. You may find something else that may suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check back periodically because new arrangements are added as often as possible. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Purcell's Allegro from his Sonata for Trumpet will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

The Finnish NA arranged for Brass Quintet. There also versions for String & full Orchestra in my two stores. The anthem lyrics were taken from a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Swedish-speaking poet, called “VÃ¥rt land†(Our Land). The song was first sung in 1848 by a student group and became popular in Scandinavia and many of his patriotic poems, including VÃ¥rt land were used by promoters of Finnish nationalism. The poem was translated into Finnish some decades later, after VÃ¥rt land was well established as a national song, by Paavo Eemil Kajander and became the anthem before 1917 independence. Estonia‘s anthem, adopted 20 years later, has the same melody, however the last few lines do not repeat as they do normally in the Finnish anthem. Interestingly, the anthem has never been officially legislated as the Finnish anthem, but rather is traditionally used as the anthem. As such, there is no standard way to perform the 11-verse anthem, but usually the first and the last verses (as presented here) are sung. There sometimes arises a debate in Finland to change the anthem to Jean Sibelius’ song “Finlandia†(the melody was used in Biafra), a song recognized internationally as a symbol of Finland, but the general opinion seems to be for now to keep the current anthem. (One reason may be that Finlandia is harder to sing compared to Maamme.)Need an anthem fast?  They are ALL in my store! All my anthem arrangements are also available for Orchestra, Recorders, Saxophones, Wind, Brass and Flexible band. Jupiter (Andante Maestoso from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets) (Brass Quintet) - Intermediate - Digital Download. This marvelous arrangement of the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts and recitals but if you are considering using this selection for church services in which a congregation may sing along, I would suggest that you look for the arrangements of either I Vow to Thee, My Country, O God, Beyond All Praising, O Spirit All Embracing or Thaxted, also by Regis Bookshar. They are all based on the same excerpt from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets. These arrangements are suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing these selections as well. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (9 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The Planets, written between 1914 and 1917 by the English composer Gustav Holst, premiered at the Queen's Hall in London, on September 29, 1918 for an invited audience of about 250 people. In the fourth movement, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Holst portrays Jupiter's supposedly characteristic abundance of life and vitality. Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. It has since been performed at numerous occasions, most notably for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and also at the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997, Margaret Thatcher in 2013 and Senator John McCain where it was performed at the Washington National Cathedral on September 1, 2018. In addition to being used as the melody for the solemn, patriotic hymn I Vow to Thee, My Country, other settings of this hymn tune also include O God, Beyond All Praising, by Michael Perry in 1982, O Spirit All Embracing by Delores Dufner in 1995 and We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God, a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudemus by Stephen P. Starke in 1999.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to the Trumpet Quintet version and this version for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets (one of which has the lead), 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. Starke in 1999.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to the Trumpet Quintet version and this version for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone (which has the lead) and 1 Tuba, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. There are Quintets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are added as often as possible. I'm certain that this beautiful arrangement of Jupiter based on t.

Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767364 Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Arranged by Mike Lyons. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and parts. 42 pages. Lyons Music Services #3545477. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767364). At long last I have nearly finished the 7th book. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. Here is a group of four very short songs for soprano duet with continuo. I have arranged them as a duet for trumpet/cornet with a four part accompaniment. The four songs are related under the commone title Ohimè, dov'è il mio ben but each also has a title of its own:1. Romanesca a 2 (This is the subtitle. A romanesca was a musical formula characterised by a falling sequence of 5 notes and with a fixed harmonic progression.) The text translates as Alas, where is my beloved?2. Dunque ha potuto sol desio d'onore - Can it be that love of honour...3. Dunque ha potuto in me, più che il mio amore - Can it be that ambition and vainglory...4. Ahi, sciocco mondo - Alas, foolish blind worldEach song is a setting of a pair of couplets which together form the whole poem, which is why I have collected them together here. Besides, on their own, each is too short. Here also is evidence of Monteverdi's progress in telling a story through music. These four songs work beautifully on brass, with gorgeous suspensions and resolutions and well directed rhythmic drive from the accompaniment. The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). This particular arrangement is for a Brass Octet, consisting of 3 Trumpets, 2 French Horns, 2 Trombones and 1 Tuba, and features a Trombone on the melody, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles.

I Gave My Love a Cherry (The Riddle Song ["The Twelfth of Never"])
Quatuor de Cuivres : 2 trompettes, trombone, tuba
Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1130062

Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1130062 Composed by English Folk Song by way of American Appalachians. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Celtic,Children,Folk,Irish,Traditional,Wedding. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #730439. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1130062). The origins of this lullaby can be traced back to 15th-century England. Pioneers from the British Isles brought it with them to the American Appalachians. Written in three verses, its lyrics tell of four seemingly impossible gifts the singer gave my love. The first verse describes each gift: cherry that has no stone, a chicken that has no bone. a story that has no end and a baby with no cryin'. The second verse poses the riddle: how can such items exist? The third provides the answers: A cherry when it's bloomin', it has no stone. A chicken when it's pippin', it has no bone. The story of I love you, it has no end. A baby when it's sleepin', has no cryin'. This Riddle Song has enjoyed somewhat of a revival since mid-20th century, making appearances in various movies, TV shows and recordings. In 1956, Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis adapted The Riddle Song tune, added an original bridge and created new lyrics; Johnny Mathis recorded it as The Twelfth of Never, giving the haunting melody probably its greatest surge in popularity. This arrangement is in G major and opens with an upbeat introduction. For the first statement of the melody, tempo slows and Trumpets alternate the lead. On the second time through, tempo speeds up slightly and tuba takes the lead. For the third, tempo is back to the opening speed and Horn in F plays the melody. On the fourth time through, Trumpets and Trombone frame the tune in a call-and-response form. In the fifth, Trombone takes the lead. In the sixth and final statement, Horn in F and Trombone play melody at half speed while Trumpets play a fairly complicated counterpoint (at what may seem like double speed!). This, until the last phrase (A baby when it's sleepin'), when the melody switches over to Trumpets and Trombone takes the counterpoint. Trumpet 1 plays its A above the staff a number of times. Tuba's lowest note is its F down below the staff. Otherwise, notes for all instruments are well within normal playing range. Because of the recommended tempo, the countermelody at measures 68-83 could be problematic for Trumpets and Trombone and may require a little extra work. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 42 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Published by Whole Tone Press (A0.774063). Expertly arranged for brass quintet, this work, based on the well-known hymn, ST. FLAVIAN, captures the somber mood of the forty-day journey through the Lenten season. Following the opening march-like fanfare, the familiar melody enters in the 1st trumpet above the drone of the trombone and tuba. Then the tuba takes the melody, transposing it to G Dorian, then, briefly to A Mixolydian. At the key change, the melody returns to its original form, now taken up by the French horn. The opening fanfare returns in an abbreviated form in the coda as the piece ends quietly on a D6/9 chord.Anthony Giamanco is a member of ASCAP. His many piano, organ, choir, and chamber works are in the catalogs of numerous publishers including GIA, Shawnee Press, Alfred, Augsburg Fortress, Lorenz, and others.
