Over the past couple of years I have written a number of film music transcriptions on and for the organ of the Royal Albert Hall in London. While the transcriptions are written with this organ in mind, often calling for specific colours such as the bass drum, carillons or tubular bells, they are adaptable on a number of different instruments and I’ve loved tweaking them in order to play them on organs all across the world. I hope you enjoy playing them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them! One of the soundtracks that I get asked to perform most regularly is Test Drive by John Powell. This is one of the earlier transcriptions I wrote, and I often use it as a piece to illustrate the difference between different organs. It’s quite useful to have one piece to use as a comparison point, so I post little videos of this wherever I’m playing to demonstrate how radically different the same piece of music can sound depending on the kind of instrument. For me, this piece feels like an instant serotonin boost. There is a great crescendo where you get to take the organ from relatively quiet to earth-shatteringly loud over the course of about 30 seconds, and I always say that playing that part feels a bit like flying a dragon! - Anna Lapwood

When they chose Pirates of the Caribbean I was a bit sceptical at first because I thought it might be too scary, but I quickly fell in love with the film and its soundtrack – it became my favourite film series and I ended up listening to the soundtrack almost every day on the walk to and from school. In the films, the character of Davy Jones plays an iconic organ on his ship, the Flying Dutchman – I think it’s one of the most well-known organ references in contemporary cinema, and so it is one of my most requested pieces. I I also love the fact that Hans Zimmer includes a little nod to Bach’s Toccata in D minor, another piece which sits at the top of my request list. In the film, the start and end of this piece is played by a musical locket, perfectly replicated by the Celeste stop on the organ, although if a Celeste stop isn’t available then a soft 8’ flute would do the job!  - Anna Lapwood.

I hope you enjoy playing them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them! We all have those pieces of music that have a strong, almost formative, childhood memory associated with them, and Chevaliers De Sangreal is one of those pieces for me. I vividly remember watching the film for the first time with my family, hearing the music and feeling an incredible emotional response to it. I wanted to work out how the music worked, so I sat in bed with a torch and manuscript paper, writing out the harmony, and trying to understand how Hans Zimmer achieved such emotion through repetition and orchestration. Every time I play this I get reminded of the goosebumps I felt hearing it for the first time.  - Anna Lapwood.

The Organ Symphony No. 6 'Te Deum' (premiered at Bruckner's St. Florian above Bruckner's tomb in 2008 and recorded there on CD) adopts the five-part structure and several motifs from Bruckner's 'Te Deum', thus becoming a forceful compact work pervaded by the Gotteslob. 1: 'Te Deum' is based on Bruckner's original figuration of fifths and eighths which is connected with the Latin Te Deum; 2: 'Te Ergo' is a 'preghiera' with pleading and praying gestures; 3: 'Aeterna fac' is an extremely virtuoso perpetuum mobile; 4: 'Salvum Fac' a basso ostinato and finally 5: 'In te, Domine speravi' a toccata which, after taking many detours, inevitably leads to the C major.

The Nocturne for Trombone and Organ by Alfred Hildebrandt Sørensen was most likely written while he studied violin and composition at the Copenhagen Conservatory of Music from 1903-1905. It was dedicated to trombonist Anton Hansen, who performed it for the first time at the Tivoli Concert Hall on August 8th, 1918, and then at the King's Garden at the Copenhagen Municipality's Free Concerts, undoubtedly in arrangements for symphony orchestra and wind band respectively.This very expressive work, beautifully edited by Niels-Ole Bo Johansen is suitable for intermediate performers as it is all in bass clef and of modest technique and range.The material is from Anton Hansen's sheet music collection in the Royal Library in Copenhagen.The work has been beautifully recorded by Mr. Johansen and organist Ulrik Spang-Hanssen (sample below on YouTube) as part of The Danish Trombone Heritage, a 2-CD album of over twenty original works from the early 20th Century composed by Danish composers for Professor Hansen.Cherry Classics with Mr. Johansen will be publishing all of these works.

The work also may be used for educational purposes in that it teaches students on how a theme is transformed rhythmically and arranged melodically.Theme And Variations On TRSCH For Organ by Thomas R. Schadl consists of seven variations that are based on TRSCH (B flat, D, E flat, C, and B or A# D D# C B). It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders. Middle parts imitate each other and are based on melodic fragments of chorale tune. To spice things up I present each chorale line with a different number of accidentals:0 accidentals, 4 sharps, 4 flats and 0 accidentals.
