The title “Litanies†obviously alludes to Jehan Alain's piece of the same name, written for organ in 1937. Inspired by this outstanding and unique composition, I had the idea, some 20 years ago, to create a piece of music based on a theme resembling a litany, too (without pretending, of course, that I would be able to equal in any way Alain's masterful quality as a composer). The main theme was notated quickly, but in the years since then, many variants and secondary themes that came to my mind did not satisfy me. Thus, it took a very long time and many ample interruptions before in this summer, with some new ideas everything fell into place as if by magic.There also exists a version of this piece for saxophone and organ (op. 3a).

This is one of a suite of organ pieces composed by David W Solomons performed by David Carlston Williams for a CD in June 2015 The suggested order for this suite is: 1. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... The rest of the suite is also available on this site: separately (with performances by David Carlston Williams) and as a set (with David's performance of Passacaglia).

And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... The suite is also available as separate pieces (with performances by David Carlston Williams).

This is one of a suite of organ pieces composed by David W Solomons performed by David Carlston Williams Registrations are as suggested by the performer. (the sound sample is from the CD, available from this site) The suggested order for this suite is: 1. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). The melody cell of the first part of Elegy n.3 is mainly made up of a fifth and fourth descending leap supported by voices that proceed in descending chromatisms, amplifying the tension. The second part is formed by a chordal section with overlapping fifths and fourths that leads to a melody line with the same rhythmic sequence but supported by a vigorous chromatism. The third part uses the initial theme again only that it is treated in the opposite direction. I deliberately avoided indicating the choice of stops to use if the piece is played on the organ, thus leaving the performer free to choose. Despite this, it seemed appropriate to indicate the dynamics signs only as a point of reference, but obviously the performer is free to file the sound dynamics of the piece at will. Obviously, playing on the piano also requires the use of the resonance pedal that the performer will use at will.

It features two distinctive crescendos, the second one should lead to a full organ sound. I had the idea of that motif two years ago and just took notes of the first five or six measures. Some weeks ago I ran into these notes once again after I had forgotton them completely. Then in one creative evening I was able to write the whole piece. Never had been more in such a creative flow state of mind before. I hope this piece will find its audience. I love it very, very much.I created a video on YouTube if you want to see which stops I used to create the crescendos. But feel free to find your own perspective on registrations.Â

I improvised this gentle piece first for the Communion of the memorial service of Lithuanian journalist Rokas Zilinskas on June 10, 2017 at Vilnius University St John's church .hen I came back home and started to transcribe it to the Sibelius notation software from this video. Although the tempo is rather slow, the process was painstakingly difficult. So I decided to improvise it fresh, this time straight to the Sibelius.What came out was a shorter version (ca. 5 minutes of duration) gentle piece suitable for Communion or recital. I dedicate it to Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra, organist, improviser, composer, pedagogue, mentor, friend.The soft strings remind me of Angels flapping their wings. The dialogue between two flutes is like two Seraphims talking to each other in thought. The dark 16' and 8' chord combination give a glimpse of mysteries invisible above the clouds in the dusk.7 pages. PDF score. Intermediate level.Let me know if you'll enjoy playing it!

Joy To The World, for organ, an arrangement of the familiar melody Antioch. The melody by Lowell Mason was inspired by the music of Handel. This arrangement has been written mainly for manuals but with an easy pedal part. This setting of the tune will make a welcome addition to your Christmas repertoire. The digital sound file lacks proper organ registrations, but allows you to imagine how you could register this music on your instrument. If you do not have an 8' trumpet available, use Gt 8'4' with sesquialtera for the solo and Sw 8'4'(2') for the accompaniment. The score is two pages with a performance time of a little under two minutes. (See also my other arrangements, including 'Jingle Bells'. This tune is from a West Indian carol, so it has Christmas origins, but even if the lyrics are known they are generic enough that you could use this anytime of the year when you want to have fun! Contains 2 key changes, some dynamic echoes, but always with a driving island rhythm. Premiere Performance was at a presentation on Caribbean music, used as an example of typical Caribbean exuberance, structure and form, and Caribbean rhythms, including polyrhythms. Marked as Advanced Intermediate simply because some people have trouble with the rhythms; but otherwise, Early Intermediate. 4 page organ solo. (Apologies for the bad recording equipment; it was recorded on a million dollar pipe organ but I realize it doesn't sound like it.)
