This little suite of four short pieces for Organ was conceived for a “ portativ †without pedals (8.8.4.2.mixture)It may also be performed on a large organ, with the condition that the organ should be treated as “ Blockwerk â€. The performer should not change the registration in the course of each movement (the registrations given may, of course, be changed if necessary). If the performer wishes to play these works on two seperate keyboards, it would be necessary to have the same registration on each keyboard (ie if mixture on the I, mixtures on the II : reeds on I, reeeds on II etc). If the performer is tempted to add an improvised pedal part, the composer would have no problem with that if it were done with taste.

COME WITH JOY is a wedding suite containing a bridesmaids' processional (REGENCY), bridal fanfare and march (SONG OF JOY), and a bright, quickly paced recessional (FESTIVE PSALM), which incorporates the melodies of the first two processionals in the B section. The bridal fanfare and bridal march was written for our daughter's wedding and later the other two were written in complimentary keys to complete the suite. Each piece may also be used separately, however, and do not have to be used together. This suite answers the need of brides who wish to have new music to use for her special day. With this suite, even though it was written as a cohesive group, the bride may choose to use as many or as few as she wishes and the bridal march with fanfare is certainly worth a consideration!An audio file of Song of Joy is included here to give you an idea of the flavor of the suite. It is the bridal march with fanfare. The recessional, FESTIVE PSALM, is lengthy and can accommodate large wedding parties without continuous repetition of the main theme. There are several sections in the work, keeping the interest level high because there's no continuous repetition of one main theme. For smaller wedding parties, where less exit music is needed, there are markings of suggested jump spots so that an entire section, or sections, can be omitted. The fact that two of the themes are taken from the previous two processionals ties the music together into an exciting cohesive unit. The music in this suite can also be used for church or school graduations, anniversaries, service music in church settings and other occasions.Regarding difficulty, the manuals require intermediate skills, but the pedals are fairly easy. Most organists who have experience in playing for weddings will be able to handle the techniques required for this suite.

The first theme starts with the G minor scale that reaches to a perfect fifth above the tonic before descending to the home key. The second theme is related to the first one, but it begins with the perfect-fifth upward movement followed by its stepwise descent, and is written in a fugal manner. The latter half of the work is a toccata written in the style of the late 19th century and early 20th century French organ music; in that section, the pedal division states the main theme against the rapid 16th notes on the manuals in the key of G Major. Technical demands include a good sense of rhythm, a steady beat and a slight legato touch. My inspiration for writing this music came from listening to Jehan Alain’s (1911-1940) organ piece CHORAL DORIEN. The work begins softly and builds up sound intensity until it reaches the climax, depicting the longing for joy and peace to come. After the climactic part of the piece is stated, the sound intensity begins to decrease and concludes in a major key. The work is suitable for recital purposes, and may also be performed in church-related events, such as the Lenten and Good Friday services. Organ registrations and tempo indications are only suggestions.

Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. It may be performed in alternatum with one of the choral versions (SATB English, SATB Latin, SSA/TTB Latin, or SSA/TTB English) or with a soloist(s) on the chant or as an organ solo. I have provided the first line of chant below and all six verses in Latin with translations on the next page. The SSA Latin version was adapted from the original SATB version for the women of the Hillcrest High School choral program under the direction of Dr. Khristi Motley in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It reduces the original four-voice setting to three voices without sacrificing any canonic entrances. Either the two-staff or single-staff version may be performed by solo organ. In the single-staff version, stem direction decisions were made primarily for readability, not to show voice leading. Theme and Variations on TRSCH is a piece that is suitable for concert use. As one plays the piece, one shall realize that each variation has its own character. The work also may be used for educational purposes in that it teaches students on how a theme is transformed rhythmically and arranged melodically.Theme And Variations On TRSCH For Organ by Thomas R. Schadl consists of seven variations that are based on TRSCH (B flat, D, E flat, C, and B or A# D D# C B). It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders.
