Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. It may be performed in alternatum with one of the choral versions (SATB English, SATB Latin, SSA/TTB Latin, or SSA/TTB English) or with a soloist(s) on the chant or as an organ solo. I have provided the first line of chant below and all six verses in Latin with translations on the next page. The SSA Latin version was adapted from the original SATB version for the women of the Hillcrest High School choral program under the direction of Dr. Khristi Motley in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It reduces the original four-voice setting to three voices without sacrificing any canonic entrances. Either the two-staff or single-staff version may be performed by solo organ. In the single-staff version, stem direction decisions were made primarily for readability, not to show voice leading. Franz Liszt composed his lyrical-meditative organ fantasia on the Ave Maria von Arcadelt in Rome in 1863. In contrast to his major virtuoso works, this charming genre piece can even be easily played on smaller (double-manual) instruments, even without swell-organ and reeds. The 'Liszt organ' at the village church of Denstedt near Weimar, which was built by the Peternell brothers in 1859/60 and has survived in its original state, may be used as an example. It did not become known until in 1927 that the Ave Maria attributed to Jakob Arcadelt (around 1505-1568) was a revised version by the composer Pierre-Louis-Philippe Dietsch (1808–1865) who used the melody of Arcadelt's chanson Nous voyons que les hommes which he then harmonized into his own Romantic four-part choral setting and to which he added the sacred text as a contrafactum. Our separate edition wants to make this rather 'poetic', yet quite easy-to-play organ work without any major technical difficulties accessible to a large circle of interested people.

Theme and Variations on TRSCH is a piece that is suitable for concert use. As one plays the piece, one shall realize that each variation has its own character. The work also may be used for educational purposes in that it teaches students on how a theme is transformed rhythmically and arranged melodically.Theme And Variations On TRSCH For Organ by Thomas R. Schadl consists of seven variations that are based on TRSCH (B flat, D, E flat, C, and B or A# D D# C B). It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6218). This is the name given to the ancient tales and legends of Scandinavia, mostly drawn up in Iceland. The term itself is of Germanic origin, form the verb 'sagen' which means to say, to recount. The title also has to do with what is said, what is recounted, in a musical epic of today. Three of these pieces, Sagas 2, 4 and 6, have the particularity of being improvisations. In Saga 1, the instrument seems to awaken out of a dream of which the two opposing elements gradually become ordered. Pedal staccati soon take control and come to predominate as they build up while, in a spirit of contradiction, various solo steps, Cornet, Cromore, unfold their melismas. The dream then reestablishes itself, this time for good. The second Saga is a sombre, frenetic dance based on groups of five semiquaves. It dies away, then, after a long silence, a note emerges, and this lone note, on three different solo stops, beaten, hunted by its two neighbouring notes in increasingly animated accents, anacruses and appoggiaturas, disappears, giving way to the sombre dance which then broadens out. It is interrupted all of a sudden by the irritated, exasperated, fuming tone of that harshness that overdoes itself and vanishes. The sombre dance appears one last time, letting itself go into paroxym. The third Saga unfolds as a very ancient chant, the memory of an Ossianic chant of the earliest times. The fourth Saga develops the lyricism of a tale to be told. But in midway comes a sort of destructive outburst of which the ever tighter links give way for a moment to pure narrativity, which, after a few upsets, ends the piece with the memory of great danger overcome by candour. The fifth Saga is a kind of quiet walk, interspersed with a few controversies, interceptions and demonstrations that are rather more lively. The sixth Saga develops a kind of theme in runs, whose constantly rhythmic rebounding might bring out the idea of apologetic or exalted acclamation.Jean Guillou (*1930) gilt als einer der bedeutenden Organisten und Orgelkomponisten der Gegenwart. It is suitable for postlude in a church setting, or as a solo rendition. It is of intermediate difficulty and can be performed on a modest instrument. Full AGO pedalboard is recommended. Note that this piece is arranged as an aaba stanza arrangement rather than the original aab triple stanza tune most current interpretations use. It just seemed better balanced to me to add the 4th stanza.Dedicated to my oldest son Michael, who loves this hymn tune.

Note from the composer: This work was originally called Impromptu Variations on Amazing Grace. In 2016, I wrote half the variations and improvised the remaining ones. By 2019, I was determined to compose the rest so that they could be learned by other organists. I also changed the title to Six Settings for Organ on Amazing Grace because I mostly varied the accompaniments rather than the theme. What sets this work apart from other composers' versions is its key, G-flat major. Although it is rarely used in organ literature, it is a personal favorite key of mine, and I consider it a good challenge for the performing artist. Not only is the key unusual, but I have also incorporated some original idioms including a flutter figure on a light stop against the theme on a chime stop and a mysterious sounding introduction including chromatic scales. Aside from these original ideas, I have borrowed techniques from the works of Dave Brubeck, Chopin and Bach. .

SOULS AT REST for ORGAN Playing time: Appx. 2:40 Services: All Saints, All Souls, Autumn, Memorial, any The pedal plays the somber yet peaceful melody in this rather introspective work, with the swell box opening now and then to allow the keyboard to give little dialogues that echo the melody. A dissonant mood in the middle section is reminiscent of our dismay and confusion over the loss of loved ones, but the return of the melody at the end soothes us once more with eternal hope. All Saints and All Souls are beautiful celebrations that are harbingers of the close of the year. As the beginnings of the pre-winter feasts, they are also the earliest to shine light in the darkness as many cemeteries become illuminated by the warm glow of thousands of candles placed in commemoration of the dearly departed. Although I composed this piece under the spiritual influence of those two holy days, the work may be used at any service where a reflective, meditative piece is needed. The registrations I give here are merely suggestions; adapt at will to your instrument and the ambience you wish to create. God bless!
