Published by Han-Ki Kim (A0.561516). “Spring of Home Country†for String Orchestra, Op. 159D “Spring of Home Country†can be said to be a work of variation in a word, and it was composed with the theme of the melody of Nanpa Hong, who played an important role in spreading Western music in Korea in the early 1900s. The nursery rhyme “Spring of Home Country†was composed in 1929 and is a familiar melody to all Koreans, young and old. The content of the poem is about the beautiful and nostalgic nostalgia of the village where I lived as a child. Following the lively prelude in 4/4 time, first violin plays the theme in an atmosphere as if reading a poem, followed by the first variation composed of splendid dispersion chords. Variations 2 and 3 are played by intersecting the parts with “Jajinmori†and “Gutgeori,†which are unique Korean rhythms. In the 4th variation, the slow-expanded theme contrasts with the fast tones of the first violin up and down. Then, the 5th Variation of the Cadenza character is played, and the final 6th Variation of the majestic character and a short coda decorate the end. In this score, short sentences suitable for the musical situation were also written in the score, so that the performer could feel the Korean sentiment in a more concrete way. Because it belongs to the folklore of Zulia, its origin remains unclear and a dispute over the authorship of the composition currently revolves around Pradelio Hernandez and Jesus Lozano. Although its date of origin is considered equally indefinable for the same reason, its official appearance can be narrowed down to the middle of the 20th century. Probably it's much older, but due to the technological improvements of music recording, the piece became popular only later. La Cabra Mocha is a musical jewel that tells the story of a nation who has a wisdom and finds in music the way to express itself. The history of its transculturation is remarkable, although it also carries contradictions, depending on the way of representing. Sometimes its imposed stereotypes are accepted by society due to a lack of self-knowledge, which ultimately leads to a change of identity, where some elements are transfigured and others are replaced. Arranging a Gaita de Furro for youth orchestra makes sense for the following reasons: First and foremost, the self-knowledge of a society should start from the childhood and should be cultivated and carried on from generation to generation, thereby conserved. Moreover, a lack of a pedagogical act, thus a pedagogical repertoire, is one of the main causes for the ignorance of Venezuelan music. Another important aspect is the transformation or adaptation as a process of maintaining Venezuelan musical culture. Many children already present the intention of the composition by drawing their attention to the formation of the orchestra, which represents a globally unified language as a network of distribution and which is locally independent. Wherever the composition is played - each orchestra will be able to maintain the quality and expressiveness of the piece without hiding its identity. The piece opens with a fanfare introduction of the Cabra Mocha, followed by a drum roll, which reminds of the drummer's traditional reputation and introduces the theme whose chorus is represented by the tutti and its verses by the soli. The first variation consists of a two-bar rhythm and major tonality, full of wit and cunning. The following variation is an Adagio with a three-part rhythm in minor. Then the timpani return to initiate the theme, this time shortened by its Reprise, which finally leads to a polyphonic Codetta. On an interpretative level, the return of variation can be compared with the return of education and thus, to a certain extent, improvisation. This is a very striking factor of traditional music, which is represented as a fitting metaphor in the form of harmonic and rhythmic reference within the composition. Dieses Stück habe ich 1949 komponiert mit dem Bestreben, den Begriff Sinfonik von der Vorstellung klassischer und romantischer Formen zu trennen. Der Hörer darf also hier nicht jene Elemente suchen wollen, die der Sinfonie des 19. Jahrhunderts eigen waren. Die Titel über den drei Teilen des Stücks haben keinen beschreibenden Charakter, sondern sind nur als Hinweise auf ihre musikalische Atmosphäre zu betrachten. Der 1. Teil beginnt mit einer Einleitung in ruhigem Zeitmaß, welcher eine lebhafte Passacaglia folgt, deren zweistimmige Bassfigur, zunächst vom Klavier vorgetragen, von Variation zu Variation durch verschiedene Instrumentengruppen in höhere Lagen gezogen wird, bei gleichzeitigem und regelmäßigem Sich-Steigern des Tempos, bis sie zum Schluss durch die hohen Violinen hindurch in das Anfangszeitmaß einmündet. Der 2. Teil beginnt in der Schluss-Stimmung des ersten und wechselt dann in eine vorwiegend von Blechbläsern getragene Periode von erregten Signalen und Rufen, welchen ein ruhiges, auf gleichmäßiger Achtelbewegung liegendes Andantino folgt, in dem Holzbläser, Harfe und Vibraphon konzertieren. Dieses Andantino wird in zwei Hälften geteilt durch einen Hymnus der Streicher und Bläser. Die zweite Hälfte des Andantino gleitet in einen stillen und aphoristischen Epilog über. Der 3. Teil ist eine lebhaft bewegte Folge kleiner Gruppen und Kurzmotive, deren formale Herkunft sich jeweils aus den rhythmischen und spannungsmäßigen Gegebenheiten des Vorhergegangenen erklärt. Kurz vor der Stretta liegt noch eine ruhige Strecke: Ein von Glockeninstrumenten umspielter Kanon der Violoncelli und Violinen. - Hans Werner Henze.

In view of Schumann’s illness, however, Joachim began to have his doubts about the value of the work. In his will, Joachim prohibited the first performance until the 100th anniversary of Schumann’s death in 1956. After detailed editorial work, the premiere was brought forward to 1937. The theme of the middle movement probably formed the basis of Schumann’s Geistervariationen (‘Ghost Variations’), the character of the third movement is that of a grand polonaise. Yehudi Menuhin who performed the world premiere of the unedited version of Schumann’s solo part saw in this piece ‘the bridge between Beethoven’s and Brahms’ concertos’.
