This concerto was composed to give value as an artistic literature to such a familiar theme. In this concerto “Arirangâ€, I want both the performers and the audience to feel “musical sympathyâ€. It was commissioned to commemorate the 60th anniversary of I Musici's founding and was dedicated to them. Following the short and fast introduction in 3/4 time, it is connected in the form of 5 variations in 6/8 time. Each variation expresses a different musical atmosphere, performance speed, or change in composition. In general, the main melody is mainly played by the first violin, but as far as the main melody is concerned, in this music, high-pitched instruments and low-pitched instruments intersect and cycle in equal positions, not in a melodicline relationship. After the fourth variation, a virtuosic solo of the movement alone is connected, and after the finale with a broad and majestic atmosphere, it ends with a short and lively coda with the same character as the beginning. Shown Bowing sign and Fingering(Vn,Va part) will be very helpful to player. Optional Violin 3(Instead of Viola part)  part included.

This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (23 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour.In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners.The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, he has created this version for a String Orchestra. As with all Pick n' Mix arrangements, there are multiple part options to suit all playing levels- whether advanced players, complete beginners and all those in-between. The melodic interest of the Verses is passed between instrument sections and develops musically throughout the arrangement, whilst the catchy, repeated Chorus section provides a great hook for everyone to join together throughout the piece. The concept of all Pick 'n' Mix Strings arrangements is that you just choose the parts which are most suited to your players. We are absolutely NOT suggesting that you try to cover every single possible part! If you don't have any players on the more advanced parts, this doesn't matter at all. Alternatively, experienced ensembles might want all players on advanced parts. You may well use a mixture of some advanced parts and other simpler parts- or you could even have a very early beginner ensemble just using the parts for open strings and first fingers, with a teacher playing the main tune on piano for instance. The national anthem of the Dominican Republic (Spanish: Himno nacional de República Dominicana), also known by its incipit Valiant Quisqueyans (Spanish: Quisqueyanos valientes), was composed by José Rufino Reyes y Siancas (1835–1905), and its lyrics were authored by Emilio Prud'Homme (1856–1932).José Reyes was inspired to create a national anthem for the Dominican Republic after having seen the Argentine National Anthem in the Parisian newspaper El Americano. In 1883, he invited his friend Emilio Prud'Homme to write lyrics for the anthem.The first version of Prud'Homme's lyrics was published in the weekly newspaper El Eco de la Opinion on 16 August 1883, and the first public performance of the anthem took place the next day on 17 August in Respectable Hope Lodge No. 9 in Santo Domingo. Though the music was an instant success, several objections were made to the lyrics for having various historical inaccuracies. In 1897, Prud’Homme submitted revised lyrics, which stand to this day.On 7 June 1897, the Congress of the Dominican Republic passed an act adopting Himno Nacional with the original music and revised lyrics as the country's official national anthem; however, then-President Ulises Heureaux (1846–1898) vetoed the act, because the lyric's author, Prud’Homme, was an opponent of the president and his administration.[1] In 1899, Heureaux was assassinated, and the political disorder that ensued prevented the national anthem's legal adoption until 30 May 1934, when Himno Nacional was officially adopted and signed into law.

Hey string players and teachers, are you looking for something different to program or teach your students? This collection of pieces, suitable for beginning and experienced ensembles, may be what you’re looking for. For the choral musician, the secular music of the 16th and early 17th centuries comprise some of the most delightful works of early repertoire. The madrigals, lieder, and chansons in this collection are arranged for string quartet and quintet. The intent of these arrangements is to enable the instrumental musician an opportunity to experience a genre perhaps less familiar, with its varying degrees of rhythmic complexity and the juxtaposed interplay of duple and triple rhythmic figures. In keeping with the period, no dynamics are indicated, and articulations are kept at a minimum. Traditionally, repeated sections are to be played at a softer dynamic, but nothing is written in stone. For the up-tempo piece, as many are, rhythmic cleanliness and clarity are paramount, particularly in the iconic Fa-la-la sections. Accordingly, although they may be warranted, no slurs are given. Occasional staccatos are suggested for crispness. Vocal breath marks (') above the staff are meant to serve as guides in phrasing only, and tempos are only suggestions. As non-sacred works, they are generally not meant as 'serious' music, but rather as the music of the common people. Bottom line, they are meant to be fun, and the performer is free to interpret as desired. This collection is a companion to the arranger’s series of Renaissance Motets Arranged for Strings. With the purchase of this collection, permission is granted to photocopy parts as needed. The audio example is of the first few pieces in the collection.

ToccataConcerto for Bass Saxophone and Strings (1999) was commissioned by basssaxophonist Andreas van Zoelen (with generous support from the Broeker Fund forNew Music) and is dedicated with appreciation and admiration to him. Van Zoelen iscommitted to enhancing the very small existing bass saxophone repertoire throughsupporting the creation and performance of new works. The subtitle of the firstmovement (...a continuum of dreams...) could be seen as a sort of subtitle for theentire work that sets the mood and provides unification for the entire piece. The firstmovement is a slow and ethereal chaconne. The strings and the saxophone interact invarious ways throughout this movement in non-traditional form. There are actuallytwo ground bass themes; one is introduced at the beginning with pizzicato stringsbut soon moves to the background (although it is almost always present). The secondis presented near the end of the work and eventually the two are combined. Theinterval of an augmented fourth (tritone) has special use throughout the movementas a variety of themes and motifs are transformed throughout. The second movementis a cadenza for the unaccompanied saxophone. The third movement is a fast andwild toccata. The saxophone plays almost without rest for the entire movement. We are absolutely NOT suggesting that you try to cover every single possible part! If you don't have any players on the more advanced parts, this doesn't matter at all. Alternatively, experienced ensembles might want all players on advanced parts. You may well use a mixture of some advanced parts and other simpler parts- or you could even have a very early beginner ensemble just using the parts for open strings and first fingers, with a teacher playing the main tune on piano for instance. The accompanying orchestra parts are not difficult, although a more advanced orchestra will be able to make even more of the light-hearted and occasionally dramatic accompaniment. Early in the work, the soloist has a few very simple solo passages which he or she deftly and smugly executes flawlessly.
