Meredith Publications (A0.1501543). This orchestration is the end product of my book entitled Orchestrational Archetypes in Percy Grainger's Wind Band Music. In an attempt to understand the enigmatic style of Grainger's wind band music, I made a detailed analysis of his recurring orchestrational practices with regard to melody, countermelody, part writing and contrapuntal dynamics. The conclusion is that the Grainger sound is a function of recurring orchestrational techniques, rather than other compositional elements such as melody or harmony. This information was then used to dish up selected Grainger voice and piano pieces in his own idiosyncratic style. I also arranged “British Waterside” and “The Cutting of The Hay” (G. Schrimer). Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight is a reflective, moving piece based on a ballad about Lord Maxwell, who has killed a rival in a long-standing bloody family feud and is leaving for Scotland to avoid prosecution. He bids good-bye to his wife, his lands and his country. Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight appears as Grainger’s British Folk Music Setting No. 42 for high tenor voice or unison male chorus and 4 strings (violin, viola, 2 cellos) in 1904. The original is in the key of F major but has been shifted to Db major in this orchestration. The lyrics of the first verse are: Adieu, madame, my mother dear,But and my sisters three O!Adieu, fair Robert of Orchardstane,My heart is woe for thee, O!Adieu, the lily and the rose,The primrose fair to see, O!Adieu, my ladye, and only joy,For I may not stay with thee, O!.

Starting quietly, the sound slowly grows to a strong B section, then marches away into the distance. This G-minor work is ideal for any concert or festival. DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Medium Easy / Grade 2 / suitable for middle school or small high school bands FEATURES: - All winds (including tuba!) have melody at least once. - Simple trombone parts (generously cross-cued in Horn, Euphonium) - 2nd Clarinet remains below break. CHALLENGES: - Use of dotted-eighth/sixteenth rhythm in melody. - Use of low register for clarinets. (low E, F, G#) - Tuba solo (cued in other parts) - Muted Trumpet 1 solo (unison line with other instruments) - Dynamics; articulations; a few 16th-notes in all parts. RANGES: - All parts are well within 2nd-year ranges: Flute to E-flat above staff (only once); 1st Clarinet to C above staff; 2nd Clarinet remains below break; Trumpets to 3rd space C (1st Trumpet to E, once); Trombone to C above staff; Tuba to C on staff, down to D just below staff. Written around 1820 by Italian composer Saverio Raffaele Mercadante, this engraving of his CONCERTO FOR HORN is in the original key and has been meticulously edited. Consisting of two sections, the beautiful, plaintive opening slow section (Larghetto alla Siciliano) is about 2.5 minutes in length and works well as a stand-alone feature to showcase the sonority of the horn. It would be perfect for a talented high school player. The concluding fast section (Allegretto brillante) is bubbly, delightful, and quite technically challenging in a few spots. The concert band / wind ensemble accompaniment (available separately) is scored to prevent overpowering the soloist and will work with smaller groups for senior recitals, etc. NOTE: This download is for the 4-page SOLO PART ONLY. If you wish to purchase the band parts and full score, please visit www.bandroom.com. This SOLO PART will also work with the Kuyper setting for piano accompaniment. Arranged for your advanced high school band or community group, audiences will be delighted in this rendition that includes three main themed sections; Battle Hymn of the Republic—featuring a call-and-response with When Johnny Comes Marching Home and Yankee Doodle—God Bless America and America the Beautiful. Each instrument not only shares in performing the melodies throughout, but also is harmonized to fit these picturesque imageries of America in this arrangement. Patriotic Salute is driven by the attention given to rhythmic ingenuity. The percussion section—snare, bass, auxiliary, timpani and glockenspiel—are the motor of this piece. The percussionists’ unique parts are separate from the ornamentations and pulsating rhythms of the brass and woodwinds, but also align with many of the syncopated and off-beat rhythms in the harmonies, as well. While Patriotic Salute starts in the Key of F before settling in the key of Bb 2/3's of the way through, this arrangement by no means feels like a piece that sticks to just two keys, as modulations and borrowed chords are filled from top to bottom. Each section is also written in such a way that the chords are not only cross-sectional, but also fulfilled within the section, adding to the lush textures. As each instrument’s ranges are stretched high and low, so are the intricacies of each passage that exemplify each instrument’s unique technicalities. Patriotic Salute is not only satisfying to the audience members, but also enjoyable to the performers. If you are looking for a straight-forward, yet exciting piece for your Patriotic celebrations, this is the piece for your library!

The Hallelujah Chorus from George Frideric Handel's Messiah has been a significant part of my musical journey, starting with my high school choir's annual holiday performances. Now, as an educator, I’m proud to continue this tradition with my own students. This arrangement for Concert Band and Choir allows us to explore the piece in a new way, blending the familiar choral lines with the dynamic power of a full band. Handel composed the Messiah in just 24 days in 1741, and the Hallelujah Chorus quickly became one of its most iconic pieces. Tradition has it that King George II was so moved during the London premiere that he stood up, leading the audience to follow suit—an act that began the custom of standing during the chorus that continues to this day. A guaranteed hit with your students, Medallion March showcases each instrument throughout this piece. Every instrument takes a turn playing the featured melodies. This is especially great for your low brass and low woodwinds, whose parts are very active throughout. The trumpets and flutes lead the way with a victorious theme as the clarinets and saxes harmonize below with parallel rhythms. As we move through the first section, the trumpets and clarinets swap parts to give an even thicker sound. The driving rhythms of the 5-part percussion section keeps everyone moving in forward motion as the middle section’s melody is heard in the low brass and low woodwinds. As the conductor, Medallion March gives you the ability to incorporate phrasing, dynamic contrast and articulation that is seen throughout. Written in the key of Bb, each instrument’s parts can be played with ease, including the clarinets who are below written below the break. The percussionists have many opportunities to shine, as the colorfulness of the cymbals and triangles compliment the pulsating rhythms of the snare drum and bass drum. There is also an option for your flute players to play the 2nd line C above the staff in the repeated trio section, doubled by the bells. This musical setting of the Kyrie was written for choir by Italian composer Antonio Lotti, who spent his entire career at the famous St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.The adaptation of choir literature for use by wind players provides an ideal tool for teaching basic musicianship such as intonation, balance, and blend as well as the advanced techniques of phrasing, nuance of line, and accuracy of ensemble articulation. Because the work consists of only 4 voices, players can more readily hear and address individual, section, and ensemble problems.The score and each part is notated with the specific voice assignment (S = soprano, A = alto, T = tenor, B = bass). This allows the conductor to rehearse like groups by simply asking for all players with the alto line and so forth.
