Kantes del verdgel de granadas – Songs from the Pomegranate Garden A Judeo-Spanish song cycle for solo voice and chamber symphony orchestra Composer’s notes: Kantes del verdgel de granadas, or in its English translation: Songs from the Pomegranate Garden, is a cycle of five songs in the Judeo-Spanish dialect, also known as Ladino. The texts, based on folk-poetry, are magical, passionate, and encompass a wide range of human emotions and experiences. We can find in them love and longing, sorrow and death, lightheartedness and folly, as well as burning love and even sexual innuendo. The vocal part portrays different stories and a variety of human characters in each of the five songs. It, thus, ranges in expression from parlando secco to lirico espressivo. The role of the orchestra in this cycle is more than just an accompaniment; it converses with the voice, adds colors and ambience, and serves as a commentary over the sung text. Thus, the orchestral part is equal to, or at times even more predominant than the voice itself. The initiative to write this composition came in response to a specific cultural approach by which creativity based on traditional Judaic material should correspond to four stages in the artistic process: Exploration, Preservation, Interpretation, and Innovation (as translated by the Hebrew terms: חידוש – פירוש – שימור – חיפוש). The main idea behind this initiative was to conserve crucial elements within traditional Jewish folk music, and then, bring about their revival as art music through new contemporary interpretations. Thus, the musical arrangement is partially based on the traditional Ladino tunes and partially original. However, phrases based on old Ladino melodies are starkly modified and composed in such way to completely evoke personal imagery and interpretation. The songs I selected for the cycle were taken from the four-volume collection: Chants judéo-espagnols by Isaac Levy. My criteria for the selection was finding lesser-known melodies, yet most intriguing ones and with a strong Judeo-Spanish character. The five songs have various degrees of arrangement vs. original composition: songs 2 and 3, Mi korason and Entre las huertas, for example, are almost unchanged, while songs 1 and 4, Dos amantes and Malato ‘sta el hijo del rey, heavily combine the old Ladino romancero melodies with originally composed material. The concluding song (Nr. 5) is entirely original, but correspond stylistically to the Judeo-Spanish musical language. While all five songs are secular in nature, the ballad Malato ‘sta el hijo del rey (The King’s Son is Ill) has been traditionally sung - according to Isaac Levy - on the night of Tisha B’Av along the scroll of Eicha to bemoan the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Ben-Amots: The Joyce Cycle (1986) James Joyce's collection of 36 love poems titled Chamber Music has been a source of inspiration to many composers. From these, Ben-Amots has set nine for medium voice and piano (later orchestrated--see below), in a style he characterizes as neo-romantic to match the deliberate archaicism of Joyce's language. The songs are meant to be sung as a complete cycle, but these complex and beautiful settings may be performed independently. Shortly after composing the cycle, Ben-Amots orchestrated it, and he now considers the orchestral version to have priority. Deftly and lightly scored (winds in pairs, no heavy brass), this version sounds strikingly Mahlerian in places. 1. O Sweetheart... The lover finds solace in love when friends him fail. 2. My love is in a light attire... He admires the sight of his love walking through an orchard. 3. My dove my beautiful one... In language reminiscent of the Song of Songs, he bids her arise. 4. Rain has fallen... They seek shelter on a rainy day. 5. Sleep Now, O Sleep Now... The lover's unquiet heart is calmed with a kiss. 6. It was out by Donnycarney... A cheerful folksong, sealed with another kiss. 7. Winds of May... By the turbulent sea, the loved one has disappeared. 8. I Hear an Army... Giving way to despair the lover dreams of an army ferociously charging up out of the depths. But... 9. From Dewy dreams... It was just a dream, after all. Published by The Composer's Own Press (A0.944032). CONCERTINO, for Clarinet, Mandolin, and Orchestra CONCERTINO was officially commissioned in 2011 by the Geneva Chamber Orchestra. The composition explores the sound combination of two, seemingly opposing, instruments and sound characters: the clarinet and the mandolin. Thus, the three-movement work is a short double-concerto for clarinet and mandolin, accompanied by a chamber orchestra. The first movement, titled Psalm 148 and is a mixture of a coronation fanfare and a wild improvisatory-like dance. The music is based on the structure and ideas expressed in the 148th Psalm. For the transformation of this Psalmodic text into music I was concerned with two elements: first, the linguistic pulse of the ancient Biblical Hebrew gives the music its ever-changing meters and vibrant rhythms. The second element was the poetic concept presented in the text: Heaven vs. Earth, Universe vs. Planet, or Heights vs. Depths. The contrasting nature of these elements is described in the following verses: Hallelujah, Praise ye the LORD from the heavens; praise Him in the heights. (Psalm 148, verse 1) Praise the LORD from the earth, ye sea-monsters, and all deeps. (Psalm 148, verse 7) Finally, both Heaven and Earth join in praise together: Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven. (Psalm 148, verse 13) The musical expression of these contraries is reflected and the use of high-range and soprano instruments (flutes, clarinet, trumpets, violins) versus low-range instruments (trombone, bassoons, cellos and basses.) The second movement, Romacero Viejo (and old love song) is a slow, lyrical dirge-like melody in a Sephardic Judeo-spanish style. In this movement the mandolin plays in the manner of an Oud – a traditional pear-shaped Arabic lute. The harmony sits mostly on a single pedal note while the clarinet imitates the chant with rhythmically free ornatmental patterns. The third and final movement, Allegro con brio, is a festive klezmer dance with a traditional Bulgar (or Freylech) rhythm, where the regular 8/8 meter is constantly divided into the irregular count of: 3+3+2. In the middle of this movement the two soloists play a cadenza, which allows them to present their contrasting yet complementary instrumental characters. The movement is titled The Geneva Bulgar in honor of the City of Geneva and the wonderful memories I have been carrying with me ever since my time there as a young student at the Conservatoire de Musique. COMPOSER’S NOTE: Story Nr. 2 for chamber ensemble and a narrator, was written as a commission for the 1983 Children's Music Festival in St. Omer, France. Since its inception, the work has been widely performed in French, German and English. The narrative of Story Nr. 2 is a little known children's story by the great French author and playwright Eugene Ionesco (1912 – 1994). The story is about play on words. Little Josette has a conversation with her father who teaches her the new meaning of words: A Telephone is called Cheese, a Cheese is a Music Box, the Music Box is called a Rug and so on. The meanings become funnier and stranger ad absurdum. Then Josette and her father combine the words into sentences and practice the new mismatched names and objects. The characters participating in the story beside of Josette and her father are Josette's pretty mother and the maid Jacqueline. Each of the characters has its own musical theme and color represented by distinguished instrumentation: Jossette's theme is played by the flute, the father is represented by the trumpet and trombone, the pretty mother by the oboe and Jacqueline by the xylophone and piano. Composer’s Note: Enchanted Landscapes was commissioned by the Colorado Springs Philharmonic in recognition of the Association’s 90th Anniversary. Inspired by the theme of America the Beautiful, I decided to portray the actual beauty of the land, rather than to use Katharine Lee Bates and Samuel Ward's famous song as a musical reference. Thus, Enchanted Landscapes was composed as a single-movement Symphonic Poem, which transforms various visual elements of our magical views into an audible experience. The main melody is vast; Spanning over 30 measures, it conveys the feeling of spaciousness. Then, the same long melody repeats in a different, higher key. The middle part of the composition presents a fanfare-like theme, which builds up through both dynamics and polyphonic means. This section, dominated mainly by the brass and wind instruments, brings in a sense of drama, mystery, and purple mountain majesties. Finally, the use of Melodica sound in the otherwise traditional orchestration, adds a feeling of nostalgia and longing to the pure and proud landscape that watches upon us constantly, and connects us with the earth, with nature, and with ourselves. THE KLEZMER CONCERTO The concerto opens with a slow but intense movement titled Pastoral Doyna.  A Doyna is a lament-like melody -- both declamatory and melancholic -- of Eastern-European origin, most likely Rumanian, Gypsy, or Jewish. The opening by the string ensemble is reminiscent of the awakening sound of nature. On top of the busy accompaniment the clarinet enters with occasional shouts, echoes, and cry-like gestures. The second movement is a sort of a wedding-waltz, titled: Dance of the Seven Circles. The name goes back to the old Jewish tradition according to which a bride must circle seven times around the bridegroom before the actual start of the marriage ceremony. Its nature of this movement is a mixture of irony and passion, humor and pain. At the end of the waltz the clarinetist is invited to play a free cadenza and improvise on previous motives and melodic patterns. The movement ends with a return to the orchestra, with a soulful lament and quiet murmuring of the soloist. The third and last movement of the concerto is titled Halleluya. It is inspired by the textual content, vibrant rhythms and many musical instruments suggested in the 150th Psalm. Toward the end of this movement, there is a second solo cadenza in a perpetual motion style, where upon the players of the orchestra join in and add their voices to the pandemonium with a song of praise: Halleluya! The movement moves between the despair and loneliness of the night that one can feel, even when sleeping next to a close partner, and the racing desperation of the mind, whereby patriotic affiliations will calm the soul at these times. the movement finishes with the tune of Land of my father's resonating but even this is of no comfort, and the troubled mind lies awake and the movement finishes with a flurry of discord.The Solitude - 5.34 in length:The movement begins with a haunting melody led by the Oboe. the Horn soon joins in as do other instruments of the quintet. A simple Gregorian type rhythm and chant passes through the quintet with the Oboe leading the movement.Crescendos and attacked notes give the piece a rise and fall showing the mood of the soul that alternates between a calm and a peak of mood as sleep is hard to come by and a restless state is invoked.It appears that the oboe will be leading the soul into peace yet, at the last moment, the quintet joins in with chords of attack and crescendo followed by a sharp diminuendo to end the piece.The soul has sought solace, yet, all they find is loneliness.Brad's Broadcast - 3:01 in length:The restless soul awakes after a restless night. The world is full of voices, advice, motivation and answers.In this lively movement, the soul searches for solace and finds sense from some sources, yet, the cacophony of contrary advice and the nature of some disciples of business and life coaches becomes confusing. there are some real gems of advice available, but, the noise of others drowns out the sense and sanity.The soul manages to find some humour in the forums and media, they smile, but the relief is short lived.The movement ends with all voices descending away in a glissando and silence is restored.By His Own Hand - 4:26 in length:This movement reflects the desperation of the soul. they have sought solace, humour has passed them by, they do not feel that they can continue to live.The piece starts with a cadenza played by a viola. A violin soon duets in this Jewish styled lament.Throughout the movement the brass are spartan, reflecting the confusion of the soul. The ability to cling onto the world and to continue living is a losing battle.The waves of the lament increase in their presence, but not velocity, for the depressed souul is reaching the point of no return and of no choice.They will soon depart from the world by their own hand. The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.817619). James Alan Bland, composer of “In the Evening by the Moonlight,” was a prolific song writer. He is said to have created the words and music for more than 600 compositions. Born in 1854 to a free African American family in Flushing, New York, he made a name for himself as musician, composer and minstrel performer. Among his compositions were “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,” “In the Morning in the Bright Light” and “De Golden Wedding.” His most famous song by far was “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” which the State of Virginia used as its official anthem for over 50 years. Bland, in keeping with his persona as a minstrel, wrote the lyrics to “In the Evening by the Moonlight” in dialect. Years passed and sensitivities changed, but the song’s poignant melody and basic sentiment survived. Latter day recordings, such as those by Bing Crosby and the Ray Charles Singers, dropped the dialect and objectionable terms. One of the most notable versions was by singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, released in 1960 on the album Nina at Newport. This brass quintet version begins with the group instrumentally humming along under an eight-measure Horn in F introduction. The first statement of the melody initially takes the form of a partial call-and-response between a Trombone/Horn duo and Trumpet 1, then switches to an exchange between Trumpet 1 and Tuba. Next, the melody is repeated but in a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of the 1880 tune “Here Dem Bells”; Tuba plays counterpoint. Third time around, the melody is presented almost exactly as Bland wrote it and as Hitchcock’s Music Store published it in 1880. Finally, the tempo slows and the melody is presented as so many have sung it around campfires at YMCA, 4-H and other youth camps all over the country: softly and tenderly. The arrangement ends with a brief recapitulation of the introduction. There are no really difficult or tricky rhythms in this arrangement. Trumpet 1’s highest note, which occurs in Section D, is A above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. Otherwise, there are no exceptionally high or low notes. The piece opens in the key of F major then, about halfway through, changes to G major. Tempo opens with a suggested MM of 104, speeds up to 120, slows to 66, increases again to 122 and finally slows to 66. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 4 minutes, 22 seconds. The second, a product of Scandinavian imaginations, is a rather unattractive dwarf (or maybe a giant) that dwells in caves or on mountains. The third is a small, hirsute and naughty household spirit. In other words, these are just the types of beings that show up on your doorstep on October 31 evenings threatening to play tricks unless you provide treats.  This composition exemplifies not only these creatures, but also the witches, skeletons, ghosts, vampires, black cats and other scary beings that populate Halloween. Written in the key of C minor with a 6/8 time signature, it rolls along at a suggested tempo of 96 BPM. Based primarily on the traditional melody, The Hearse Song (the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out), it also quotes the composer’s own The Eerie Night and Chopin’s Marche Funèbre. And like the worms of the song, the melodies work their way sinuously in and out among the five instruments. Most notes are well within normal playing range: Trumpet 1’s highest is five A notes above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. There are no tricky rhythmic figures. It’s just a fun piece for Halloween . . . or any time of the year.  Completed in 2021, performance time for Gremlins, Trolls and Hobgoblins runs about 3 minutes, 33 seconds. Main Titles of America was composed during shelter-in-place in July 2020. The piece was premiered in Winter of 2020 and was selected as a finalist in the 2021 National Young Composers Challenge. The composition was largely inspired by film music. In a film score, there is often a piece called Main Titles that plays during the opening scenes of the film. Typically, this piece encaptures all the major musical motifs present in the score of the movie. As the name suggests, Main Titles of America portrays the major themes of America in musical form. The three themes the piece highlights are opportunity, freedom, and love.The main musical motif appears early in the piece and is supported with eight notes and triplets from the harp and violas. The overall feel is adventurous and hopeful with energy building. The main motif is prominent throughout the piece, and almost every instrument plays the motif at some point. Each instrument represents a unique person who has the opportunity to flourish in America. The second motif represents freedom, and it is primarily played by the woodwinds. In particular, the flutes with their light, feathery sound help to express this idea. This motif is more playful and adds a touch of cheerfulness and lightness to the piece. It reflects the happiness of being free. The main motif and the second motif are intertwined just like opportunity and freedom. The third motif represents love and is prominent in the second half of the piece. The same eighth notes and triplets provide seamless energy and flow. While still maintaining a dream-like feel, this motif is meant to sound more grandiose and emotional. The sweeping themes and romantic harmonies are intended to portray the feeling of an ideal relationship. The piece ends with a triumphant brass chorale (the same motif from the beginning) followed by a tutti chord. It’s the musical representation of look how far we’ve come! The piece highlights the infamous American Dream - that anyone in America has the opportunity to pursue their dreams, find love, and create their own destiny.

Why were they in a sleigh in a New England late November? Because the Little Ice Age was still extant in the early 19th Century and there was snow on the ground! Later, maybe in the 1870s, the poem was set to a tune, the composer of which is unknown. Ukrainian and Soviet composer, Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938), was a highly regarded concert pianist, concertmaster and educator. Kosenko began his formal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a composition student of Mikhail Sokolovsky. While in school he served as concertmaster of the Marinsky Theatre. Aleksandr Glazunov, the Director the Conservatory, was greatly impressed with Kosenko and spoke highly of his work.  Regarded by his contemporaries as a master of lyricism, his first compositions were markedly influenced by the works of composers such as Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and his fellow Ukrainian Mykola Lysenko.  During his short career he composed over 100 works for piano in a total of about 250 musical works. Other works include his symphonic Moldavian poem, choral and folk music arrangements, violin and piano concertos, trios and string quartets. During the 1930s Kosenko became dedicated to writing music for children. His first compositions for children were Four Children’s Pieces for piano (1930; this arranger has scored these four works for violin and piano, flute and piano, and cello and piano, as well as string orchestra).
