The piece has a great message and chorus, and several work sections. 2 page arrangement is challenging and also improvised over, but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Fun tune to learn and improvise over. I used it in church for a prelude, and it was well received with a jamming drummer. Fun Stuff.

I’D RATHER BE BLUE, THINKING OF YOU (than be happy with somebody else) was originally recorded by pioneering American songstress Fanny Brice in 1929. Since then it was featured in her biography “Funny Girl†when it was sung (and danced on roller-skates!) by Barbra Streisand. This is a FLEXIBLE ORCHESTRATION which implies that it is intended for community bands, bands in small schools, club bands etc. and can be played, not only by full bands or orchestras but by incomplete bands and bands that are made up of almost any mixture of instrument that you can imagine. To achieve this, the music is made up of five “Parts†or voices which are defined by pitch and key e.g. Part II Bb – Trumpet, Clarinet, Tenor saxophone etc. To those five are added additional parts for percussion, tuned percussion, piano and voice. I should mention here that, besides regular band or orchestral instruments, it is possible to include less used instruments such as harmonica, piano-accordion, ukulele, electric guitar – the list is endless! Lastly, it is possible to use flexible orchestrations for chamber groups of any size. They can be chosen by instrument family e.g. Woodwind quintet, or by particular instrument e.g. Clarinet Trio.

In 1930, George Gershwin, together with his brother Ira, was invited to go to Hollywood to provide the music for the film Delicious. He spent seven weeks on the score only to find that just four songs (Blah, Blah, Blah; Delicious; Katinkitschka; Somebody from Somewhere), a five-minute Dream Sequence and one minute from a six-minute orchestral sequence called New York Rhapsody would be incorporated in the film. When he went back to New York in February 1931, George had decided to use the material from the six-minute sequence to work into a concert piece and had sketched some of it. Some of the material was jettisoned: the Manhattan Rhapsody opens with the main romantic theme in 6/8 time arranged for piano and solo cello. The rest of the film sequence was radically rearranged and rescored. Gershwin completed the fourteen-minute piece by May. The new work was titled Rhapsody in Rivets during his sketching, but later he could not decide between New York Rhapsody and Manhattan Rhapsody. George Gershwin settled on Second Rhapsody.

Once turning to the right, then turning to the left - and energy restarts to flow. Flowing, streaming, even sweeping somebody away. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808659). Prerecorded wax cylinders were first marketed in 1889. Ten years later, when this Howard and Emerson tune was published, those cylinders were referred to as records, and Arthur Collins made the first recording of Hello! Ma Baby. The lyrics tell the tale of a guy who has a girlfriend he knows only through the telephone. This was one of the first songs to deal with the telephone (that medium, too, being still pretty new). The chorus was kicked back into the spotlight in 1955 when a certain movie frog sang and danced his way across a Warner Brothers cartoon background. The current version used the 1899 sheet music as its source, but is a completely original arrangement that enhances the ragtime feel of the music. This is an infectious piece that is fun to play and a toe-tapper for the audience. Completed in 2016, this arrangement’s performance time runs about 3 minutes, 20 seconds.
