The Home Coming March (1908) - Concert Band Score and Parts PDF Music by: ET Paull Of course, eventually, all the soldiers and sailors had to eventually come home from all the battles and Paull had that eventuality well covered also. The artwork on the front cover (of unknown origin) is one that is full of imagery that covers all aspects of the services, Army and Navy and is full of patriotic and familial ideals. The border lists all of the US States and the corner pictures depict aspects of homecoming. The main image is a parade of victory. Let's let Paull explain it all to us as he did on the inside cover. Why This Piece Of Music Was Named The Home Coming March Explanatory When the author had about completed the music of the present march, it occurred to him that it might be well to have suggestions made from a number of people, recommending a good name for same, for after all there is considerable in a name. He, therefore, had a special advertisement placed in several of the leading music Journals throughout the country, offering a prize of $10.00 in gold to anyone suggesting a name that would be accepted. Over three thousand names were sent in from all parts of the country, even from far away New Zealand and Australia, in which countries the author's marches are universal favorites. Included in the letters received was one from Mr. W. C. Bates, Secretary of the Sheffield Advertising Agency of New York and Chicago, in which he suggested the name The Home Coming March. After due consideration, this name was accepted, and the prize was awarded and paid to Mr. Bates, who stated that he was prompted to recommend this name on account of having been present during the impressive celebration of Old Home Week in Boston, Mass., last year. Probably no one idea is so universally dominant in the mind of the Human Race as that of home, or matters pertaining to home. The author believes that the name selected is one that will appeal to everyone; as the many pleasant associations with the words Home Coming are almost without limit. The title page of this march is without any exception the handsomest seen on a piece of music. The main body of the title pace represents a street scene, with buildings decorated and shows a handsome royal Arch of Welcome in the foreground, gaily decorated with flags, emblems, and bunting. A band is shown passing under the arch, leading a procession of the Home Guard, and thousands of people waving handkerchiefs, banners, flags, etc. Four smaller scenes also appear on the page, one representing the Home Coming of the soldier from war; another scene shows the Home Coming of the sailor boys embarking from their battleships; another scene represents the Home Coming reunion of the family and loved ones; the fourth scene represents the Home Coming of the father from work, where a little tot has been watching and waiting, and runs to meet him. The whole design of the title page is then surrounded by a border of differently designed medallions, on which appears the names of all the States of the Union, making without a doubt, the most unique and attractive title page ever conceived for a piece of music. One thing Paull mastered early in his career was the art of overstatement! Musically, this march is beginning to show the repetitiveness of many of Paull's works, especially evident as time passed. Once Paull found the formula (a fabulous cover and a playable, rousing march) that sold music, he stuck with it and was quite successful as a result.This arrangement is for Full Concert Band with the original optional piano part ( Not on the score). His symphony was composed while he was in America and was first performed by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893. It has been said that Dvorak's themes in his symphony were inspired by American folk melodies, especially Afro-American or American Indian. But his themes are just as similar to Bohemian folk music and most likely from that music. This arrangement is based on the one played in the movie Clear and Present Danger by the United States Air Force Band. It has been used at presidential funerals for the departure ceremonies at Andrews Air Force Base for Presidents Reagan, Ford and Bush. It was used in 1998 for the dis-interment ceremony for the Vietnam Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery and is still used today by military bands at Arlington.Jari Villanueva earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Music from Kent State University, Ohio. He retired from the US Air Force Band in Washington DC where he spent 23 years as a trumpeter, bugler and staff arranger. He started his publishing company JV MUSIC in 1995. It was the debut solo single by Knopfler and charted at number 56 in the UK, number 26 in the Netherlands and 18 in New Zealand. Despite its rather modest chart position in Knopfler's native UK, Going Home remains one of the artist's most popular songs. A supergroup, referred to as Mark Knopfler's Guitar Heroes, recorded Going Home to support the Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America. The recording, released 15 March 2024, was Jeff Beck's final recording before his death. Published by Han-Ki Kim (A0.561516). “Spring of Home Country†for String Orchestra, Op. 159D “Spring of Home Country†can be said to be a work of variation in a word, and it was composed with the theme of the melody of Nanpa Hong, who played an important role in spreading Western music in Korea in the early 1900s. The nursery rhyme “Spring of Home Country†was composed in 1929 and is a familiar melody to all Koreans, young and old. The content of the poem is about the beautiful and nostalgic nostalgia of the village where I lived as a child. Following the lively prelude in 4/4 time, first violin plays the theme in an atmosphere as if reading a poem, followed by the first variation composed of splendid dispersion chords. Variations 2 and 3 are played by intersecting the parts with “Jajinmori†and “Gutgeori,†which are unique Korean rhythms. In the 4th variation, the slow-expanded theme contrasts with the fast tones of the first violin up and down. Then, the 5th Variation of the Cadenza character is played, and the final 6th Variation of the majestic character and a short coda decorate the end. In this score, short sentences suitable for the musical situation were also written in the score, so that the performer could feel the Korean sentiment in a more concrete way. It was commissioned by Dr. Kristen Tjornehoj, Conductor of the University of Wisconsin at River Falls Symphony Band in remembrance of Kaye Bird, who passed away in 2016 as a resident of River Falls and a member of the community for several years. Heading Home is a new, easy swing number for junior big band. This was originally a song and so essentially has a verse-refrain form. All the sections have something to do and there are short solos for the lead players. A tempo range is suggested so that bands with different abilities will be able to attempt this piece.Following the intro, which uses the refrain, the main theme is stated by unison saxes. The brass enter in the continuation of the main theme, with the saxes now in harmony. Unison trumpets then play the refrain and that is followed by the first solo section, which is cued in the lead alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone parts as well as the optional flute. A solo is suggested but the chords are included so that players can try out their own ideas. This section is followed by a brief bridge passage played by the trombones and lower saxes. After that we hear the second part of the main theme again, which is followed by unison trumpets playing the refrain and another short solo section. At the change of key, the trombones and lower saxes take over the main theme at first. Following the final refrain, the outro with its walking bass, cross-stick now added to the rhythm, and syncopated accompaniment beneath a sax or flute solo ensures that this piece really is heading home, although it concludes on a quiet note.The actual notes of these charts are easy, but this piece still demands full concentration and that tight playing so crucial to the big band sound. Unison passages will test intonation. For players new to swing, I hope it will help them to become familiar with this style of music.
