Throughout the work, the trombone is placed into a variety of different musical contexts—sometimes with bleakness and sometimes with warmth. The work begins with the tubular bells alone, presenting the principal musical material of the work. The strings enter with a suspended tapestry, through which the trombone plays its opening melodies. In this section, the trombone has a cantorial role—singing and interacting with the orchestra. These opening musical ideas are developed as the trumpet, horn, and clarinet join the trombone in soloistic roles. A signal gesture on the trumpet is heard once, interrupting the tapestry. When the signal is heard again, the music accelerates into the second section. The second section is fast and bell-like as the trombone sings excited lines through ringing masses of sound. Whirring figurations emerge in the winds and are picked up by the strings. The sectiongrows wilder until it climaxes in hammer chords. From this, the trumpet, bells, and trombone emerge—maintaining and propelling the energy of thesection. Gradually, the energy is released, leading into the third section. The third section is chorale-like, combining again suspended sounds in the strings with harmonic motion in the winds in brass. The trombone again plays a cantorial role. A build up of energy occurs at the end of this section, leading into the fourth and final section—the cadenza. The trombone bursts into the cadenza, not with a forceful shout, but with a whisper. The work winds down to its conclusion—without a loss of speed or energy, but rather by the increase of silence. Composed in collaboration with clarinetist Dr. Corey Mackey, this three-movement concerto presents three distinct musical impressions led by the lyrically virtuosic clarinet solo. Each movement progressively gains a broader perspective of time and space, from the minute movements of the hummingbird, broadening to the majesty of mountains and ending with a vast impression of traveling through the universe at the speed of light. Movement one, Trochilidae-Allegro, celebrates the brilliant animation of the hummingbird. Emily Dickenson called it a resonance of emerald, a rush of cochineal. The clarinet solo imitates its mercurial flight darting and hovering in and around the orchestra. The second movement, Spiritual Adaptation to Higher Altitudes-Adagio, illustrates he slow and dramatic ascent of the clarinet through a broad and majestic orchestral soundscape culminating with an ecstatic summit vista. Published by Juan Carlos Guerra Gonzalez (A0.1213587). “Ritual†(Rite) was kindly commissioned by Costarican Conductor and Composer Eddie Mora to be premiered by an ensemble from the “Banda de Conciertos de San José†in Costa Rica.The piece evokes a rite in the Pipil tradition in El Salvador, in which our ancestors presented offerings to the god of the water and rain (“Tlaloc.â€) The music starts with the trombone resembling a caracol doing a greeting to the 4 cardinal points. The main rhythmic idea combines different traditional rhythms from El Salvador (as investigated by Aracely Sánchez). For the melodic material, I wrote a theme that evokes the sound of the “pito flautaâ€, a traditional “flute†used in El Salvador. In the Ritual offered to Tlaloc, our ancestors asked for a good harvesting season and that Tlaloc grant them rain and enough water for the year. The central section of the piece starts with a glissando from the Vibraphone and represents the idea of water and rain. The piece finishes with a new exposition of the dance-like section presented in the beginning adding more elements at a slightly faster speed.

Ahaunting french horn solo is followed by a dramatic trek utilising the whole orchestra to the end where the horn to round the piece off.Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' the history of which can be found here: https://www.britainexpress.co.uk/attr... Part 1 (0 - 2:24) It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery. Part 2 (2:26 -3:37) It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme. Part 3 (3:37 - 6:02) The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train (4:30) where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights (4:55). The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. (5:02) No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination. Part 4 (6:03 - 8:12) The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters (6:30). As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face (8:01) as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

Not overly difficult but players should be around Grade 5 (ABRSM) and intermediate level concert bands, school bands and symphonic wind ensembles should manage it easily. Big Band Jazz Ensemble Trumpet Feature This is an arrangement I did for Buddy Rich’s RCA “Stick It†recording which featured Lin Biviano. There is also a video of Charlie Davis performing it at a concert in London with Buddy’s band. It’s not an easy solo for the featured trumpet player but for those who haven the chops, I believe it will prove to be a real crowd pleaser. As with all of the new issues of the charts I’ve done for Buddy, I’ve added a 4th trombone part and have included a drum part. I’ve also written out a suggested bass part for ensembles that prefer to have that in the part. Electric bass is important to the overall sound of the piece but an amplified accoustic bass could suffice. Try to avoid the temptation to speed up the tempo and go with the suggested tempo markings.

This is the only known six-voice fugue in music literature; and despite the title, Bach himself thought of it as such, often referring to it as his Prussian Fugue. By the time of Bach, distinctions had nearly disappeared between ricercari and fugues. Most organists, however, stick to the painfully slow tempi of ricercari in performance, and speeding it up a bit in this arrangement makes it much more accessible to players and listeners alike. The FINALE audio extract is a bit misleading, as there is no sound bank for flugelhorns; but you certainly get the drift. It's a bit of a haul; a C trumpet part has been included as a substitute for the Eb trumpet called for in the score. This piece would work well as a brass ensemble chart.
