(the musical). Strap in and be part of a thoroughly bonkers ordeal as the tuk tuk careers around the city (complete with many blaring horns and panic!) as it endeavours to reach its destination. Tuk tuk ride is one of the two more lively movements from the book (Spicy Disco is the other hilarious and rather frantic piece....obviously someone really needs to party! ;D), but we get a brief respite before that observing the local sights (Pat Pong), and also on the river boat ride (Chao Phraya) which is a nice slow tempo with blending lines (great for practicing control and blending within the ensemble). The saxophone octet is aimed at advanced confident ensembles (we'd typically recommend grade 7+) due to the tempo changes (and just tempo for that matter!). .

Pat Pong is movement two (of four) from the delightful 'A Night In Bangkok' original suite by Claire Tomsett-Rowe for flexible saxophone octet (with optional bass sax) - not to be confused with 'ONE Night in Bangkok' from Chess! (the musical). Pat Pong shows the sleaze of a visit to a club (musical directions include 'filthy' for example ;D). Other pieces from the suite (though not included here in this purchase) are 'Tuk Tuk Ride': a thoroughly bonkers ordeal as the tuk tuk careers around the city (complete with many blaring horns and panic!) as it endeavours to reach its destination. Tuk tuk ride is one of the two more lively movements from the book (Spicy Disco is the other hilarious and rather frantic piece....obviously someone really needs to party! ;D), and (thankfully!) some respite on the river boat ride (Chao Phraya) which is a nice slow tempo with blending lines (great for practicing control and blending within the ensemble). The saxophone octet is aimed at advanced confident ensembles (we'd typically recommend grade 7+) due to the tempo changes (and just tempo for that matter!).

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a German composer who crafted his works using the techniques of musical counterpoint within traditional forms. It was given as a birthday present to Clara Schumann (a famous piano virtuoso in the 19th century). Brahms admitted to writing these just for himself, casting them with an introverted and somewhat melancholic tone. Recognized as one of Oscar Peterson’s most significant compositions, Hymn to Freedom was written in 1962 and was swiftly embraced by people over the world as the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. The piece was Peterson’s first major work and was written with encouragement from his producer and dear friend Norman Granz. During those initial recording sessions, Granz urged Peterson to create a tune with a “definitive early-blues feelâ€. For inspiration, Peterson drew upon various church renderings of Negro spirituals recalled from his childhood in Montreal. He aimed to maintain the unadorned, yet poignant quality of these early Baptist hymns while composing the beginning chorus of Hymn to Freedom. Upon its completion, Peterson and Granz decided that lyrics would complement the music and contacted Malcolm Dodds, composer, arranger and choir director of The Malcolm Dodds Singers, a backup group for many popular artists of the day. Dodds turned to his collaborator Harriette Hamilton, who had been writing lyrics for the choir group’s original compositions for several years. According to Hamilton, “all the lyrics had to do was express in very simple language the hope for unity, peace, and dignity for mankind. It was easy to write.†With Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, the trio recorded the piece on Night Train (Verve 1962), which became one of their most commercially successful albums. Critical acclaim moved Peterson to record Hymn to Freedom on several albums that followed. This arrangement is playable by SATB Saxophone Quartet with optional Bass Saxophone, String Bass and Drums. For performances by SATB Saxophone Quartet without rhythm, the part marked Baritone Saxophone 2 (substitute Bass Saxophone) should be used. Some improvising is allowed for in the soprano, alto and tenor parts. Optional written solos are provided. The opening fast movement has a minimalist feel with the recorders dancing around each other. The central slow movement is a beautiful long tune, arching over a pulsing accompaniment. The final movement is a fast fugue, full of energy, with stretto, augmentation and inversion. It ends with a short reference to the slow movement melody. It is best suited to professional or advanced amateur players, although it sounds harder than it actually is to play.
