Challenged by my friend André Granjo, I wrote this piece for Wind Instruments Group of Coimbra (GISC)​​, where André is now conductor. It is expected to be premiered during the first months of 2013, in collaboration with internationally renowned saxophonist Jean-Yves Fourmeau. I've been teenager GISC saxophonist, and with the group traveled through several European cities, which otherwise would have been impossible for me. I dedicate the Martim’s Legend to GISC and Professor Adelino Martins, who directed the group for decades, until his retirement this year. I related his name with a book I read, A Lenda de Martim Regos written by Pedro Canais and published in 2004. Martin, the main character, is born in Ribatejo (Portuguese province) in the fifteenth century, and his fate led him through Africa, America and Asia. Its amazing fictional story inspired me this music, because of travel, discovery, persistence and distracted absorbing knowledge.

Brass & PercussionLooking for something just a bit different/reduced from the concertato form, and even easier to learn to kick off the choir season?Based on Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above this arrangement, entitled Let All Things Praise the Lord is faithful to the original including a stanza omitted in most hymnals that speaks of the choir as a battle-worthy leadership unit in worship.The text, based on Psalm 150 by English pastor Charles Wesley, was originally published in his brother, John Wesley’s Founder Collection of 1742 in conjunction the tune AMSTERDAM (which carried annotations and adaptations from a German tune). Immediately following the choir, brass, percussion and organ/keyboard fanfare, opportunity is given to the congregation to participate in the liturgy. The middle section is original music that wings the emotion/meaning of the text to a more meditative stream and back again—via a reprise of the opening fanfare—to the rousing finale with a creative descant that appears not only in Soprano/Tenor, but also (for a change) in Alto and Bass. Published by John Ross (A0.1402556). “Loquebantur, -bantur, -bantur†is based on 'Loquebantur variis linguis' by Thomas Tallis. The words are from the responsory for 1st Vespers at Pentecost and tell of the Apostles beginning to speak in many tongues, proclaiming the great works of God. In this reworking, vocal parts gradually move away from the Tallis original, taking musical ideas from the soprano saxophone part and “speaking in tonguesâ€. The opening interplay between sax and solo tenor uses notes from the Intonation, creating the “-bantur, -bantur†figure which gives this arrangement its title. As the piece proceeds individual vocal lines gradually speak in the tongues suggested by the sax. By the end, the joyful combination of many musical ideas is crowned by the ecstatic saxophone part. The “tongues†ideas are shown in the score by added phrasing and by using lyrics in italics. These fragments should be sung a little more prominently, allowing them to pop out above the overall texture. An additional tenor line has been added, making the piece’s scoring SSAATTBB plus saxophone.

Originally the text for a Gregorian chant, it was later used in polyphonic motets of the 16th century – and many settings have been composed since then. Perhaps the enduring appeal of the poem is based on its simple depiction of Christ’s humanity and humility, together with its expression of devotion to his mother, Mary. In composing my own setting, it pleased me to think of the choir as representing the worldly creatures (people and animals) present at Jesus’s birth; and the saxophone as an otherworldly, mystical presence hovering above. It’s a fanciful notion, but I found it inspiring.
