The text comes from a set of short poems by Ms. Nava Faith Bawayan evoking short personal impressions and reflections on each of the traditional last seven words of Christ. The music are short musical impressions in a semi-contemporary (avant-garde) style, scored for an SATB choir, Tenor and Soprano Soloists and Piano. It features call and response passages between the soloists and the choir, short canons, and easy chord clusters for certain effects. The composer has considered these especially for choirs who are immersed in the Hymn singing tradition but are expanding into a more contemporary style of music.1. Father Forgive them2. An epic piece for SATB choir and optional solo soprano part on the last page of the piece. This piece represents close and even clustered harmony, almost like a beautiful orchestra, but with voices. The piano player is more of a piano reduction of the choral parts. This is the perfect score for harmony practice within the choir, especially with ensembles that have trouble finding pitch in closer quarters. The text of Breathe Low is a meditation for those who are in tough times. The original text speaks peace and restoration. Breathe Low and Speak soft refer to a calming effect that will sooth audiences. There is also what I call the Football Section where a fugue like subject, Let us find peace, tosses itself between all voices starting in the bass section, moving to tenor, alto and soprano. Sometimes this section shares harmony (SA and TB together). It does have multiple meters from 4/4 to 2/4 time and back again. This peace encompasses a wide use of dynamics from piano to double forte. Print this piece on 8.5 x 11 in. paper. It is around 4 1/2 minutes and is 8 pages long in print.

The long, lyrical melody borne forward by the steady, quiet, powerful accompaniment conveys a tranquil sacredness. The sense of entreaty and desire for benediction expressed in the Agnus Dei seems a natural fit with Handel’s famous melody. An instrumental introduction leads to the voice calling out agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi. An instrumental meditation follows leading back to the conclusion of the piece. Arrangements for other ensembles are also available (Vocal Solo, SSA, SAB) as well as separate versions featuring the addition of Solo Violin, Flute, Oboe or Clarinet and soloist with chorus. The piece starts in unison and broadens our in density and range, until finally returning to a unison and ending halfway through the phrase. The effect is meditative and appropriate for reflective moments. Initially written as a part of a four movement work Al Ahava veAfar (on love and dust), the canon may be performed on its own or combined with any of the original accompanying movements.

Published by Ivo Antognini (A0.1211209). In this Trinity Service (2021) I used the text of the Magnificat as if it were the storyboard of a film. I tried to describe in the utmost detail the emotion the words conveyed to me and the images they suggested. In this composition I have used word-painting, attempting to colour as many words, phrases and situations as possible; hence the score is full of expression markings such as ‘majestic’, ‘with vigour’, ‘lively’, ‘intense’, ‘with affection’ and ‘with verve’. The result is a piece that changes texture rather quickly, and its noble opening theme (‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’) returns only once in abbreviated form (‘He hath filled the hungry with good things’). The following Nunc dimittis has a much more meditative and intimate character with a sparser texture. There are some references to the themes presented in the Magnificat. A motif from the Magnificat, ‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son’, recurs in almost the same form towards the close of the Nunc dimittis, but in a quieter vein and in 4 rather than the 43 of the Magnificat. The Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis may be performed individually.
