Appropriate for the Easter season or any time of the year to remind us that Jesus death was not the end. This beautiful choral arrangement will stir the heart and inspire many. Jesus is alive in His heavenly home and yes, He still loves us! For verse two, the rhythm varies with the words from verse 1. For example, taken should be on two 8th notes instead of one quarter note like in the first verse. I have included a recording I made at home using just my voice to give you an idea of what the song sounds like. Of course, with a full choir, it will sound so much better. I am a soprano and I was trying to sing tenor and bass, so please use your imagination!

Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. Near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†The beautiful Medieval English text for this piece is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I lines 148-154 in which Julian reflects on the vision she experienced about a hazelnut in the palm of her hand. She comes to understand that God loves even a small, ordinary thing like a hazelnut, such that it will not disintegrate but last forever because of God’s love for it. In Julian’s vision, the hazelnut symbolizes all that is made — all of Creation that God made and loves forever. The music combines Medieval sounds and counterpoint with lush, modern harmonies, woven together with the smooth color and elegant lines of the clarinet. Singers use Original Pronunciation to capture the lyricism of Julian’s words. In a large-scale art project, prisoners serving a life sentence at the Clairvaux high-security prison in north-eastern France were interviewed by the composer, who set their stories to music. The piece is incredibly dark, coloured by the innermost thoughts of individuals who know they will never again be free, people who are slipping into oblivion. Clairvaux wasn't always a prison, though - it was formerly an important monastery. Established by St. Bernhard in 1115 and closed in connection with the French Revolution, Clairvaux is a mythic place. For some, it is an abbey where thousands of monks voluntarily chose the path of saints, plunging themselves into the blessed silence of darkness. For others, it is a prison, the sheer name of which inspires terror and generates horrific images. My intention was that we, with our concert, would create a bridge between the present and the past, between incarceration and voluntary solitude. So I sought out the historical sources for our earliest notated music, from the French abbey of Solemn, and composed a variety of versions based on Gregorian themes. That's when the music takes me is taken from Neil Sedaka's Solitaire LP. The song was notable as it was one of the only songs for which Sedaka wrote the lyrics in addition to the music. He often finishes his song using the song. (The ending of the arrangement is inspired by how he performs the song live, rather than the recording edit). It reached #18 on the UK singles chart, #27 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #7 on the US Billboard Easy Listening chart. This arrangement was written for a barbershop chorus, and as such the lowest voice part has a lower range than is custom for choral SSAA writing. The melody sits with the lead for the vast majority of the song, but with the bass part taking a few of the lowest notes. Please note: in keeping with normal barbershop practice the men's barbershop voicing names are used (tenor, lead, baritone and bass) and an octave-shifted bass clef is used for the baritone and bass parts. Vocal ranges are: Tenor: D4 - G5 (D above middle C to G above high C) Lead: B3 - D5 (B below middle C to D above high C) Baritone: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to D above high C) Bass: D3 - D4 (D below middle C to D above middle C).
