Five Poems by H.D. (2019) is dedicated to Öznur Hasibe Tülüoğlu. I heard her sing at her senior recital at the New England Conservatory of Music this spring and I immediately thought I should write a song cycle for her. I love the poetry of H.D. (aka Hilda Doolittle). My first attempt at setting her poems to music was in 2015. The poems in that song cycle focused on several figures from Greek mythology: Adonis, Circe, Lethe, Daphne, Evadne, etc.The words in this cycle are Ms. Doolittle's poetic musings on fragments left behind by the ancient Greek poet Sappho.1. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869626). Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is of course a major Italian poet. But the story of his youthful infatuation with Beatrice caught my eyes. I got his book La Vita Nuova in a dual language edition published by Dover and proceeded to look for the right set of poems for my setting. There are four long poems that I found beautiful and fabulous, but I ended up using only portions of the first three. Even so the song cycle is quite long, at 28 minutes. Program note.The greatest challenge of the Stabat Mater text is to figure out how to set twenty stanzas of pain and suffering without making it all sound too depressing. So, before I began composing, I looked at a number of scores and recordings of Stabat Mater by various composers: DesPrez, Palestrina, Pergolesi, Boccherini, Vivaldi, Haydn, Dvorak, Rossini, Poulenc, Szymanowski, Penderecki, et al. It was fascinating to see what each composer did with regard to text setting: the variety of musical textures from movement to movement, different approaches to the use of fast or allegro music to offset the mood of the text, solo versus choral sections, etc. Each composer took a very personal and creative approach to the task. It was a fascinating study! After weeks of listening and scrutinizing, I decided to divide the twenty-stanza text into six sections. It is my hope that the end result is formally coherent and emotionally affecting.I. Lento Stabat Mater dolorosa â?¦II. I inadvertently discovered that the poet Friedrich Rückert who penned Kindertodtenlieder (yes, with a d ... LOL!) wrote 400-plus of these KTL poems after his two youngest children died of scarlet fever. I bought the book @ Amazon. After plowing through 442 of them, I winnowed it down to ten poems for my song cycle. It is scored for soprano and piano. NB: I cannot afford an orchestra, and it would be too much unnecessary work. LOL!!! The entire song cycle has a duration of ca. 35 minutes. It ends like a mechanical music box while the soprano sings a lullaby. Sleep is of course a perfect metaphor for being dead. Over the next ten years before he died in 1935 Pirandello wrote over 600 letters to her. Marta Abba never reciprocated his affection and always kept him at arm's length. But he never gave up trying to woo her. I gleaned through these hundreds of letters translated by Benito Ortolani in his book, Pirandello's Love Letters to Marta Abba, and extracted excerpts from eight letters that give a small vignette of Pirandello's obsession with his muse, Marta. I recently discovered Reynaldo Hahn via the superb soprano Veronique Gens' album Néère. She included in her album selections from Reynaldo Hahn's song setting of poems by Charles Marie René Leconte de Lisle called Études Latines. There are eighteen of these very enigmatic and fanciful poems about Greek or Latin gods and goddesses: Apollo, Venus, Lydia, Bacchus, Diane, Phoebe, Phyllis, Glycère, Naiads, Pyrrha, etc. Hahn set ten of these poems in an array of vocal settings: choral, solo male or female voices. I acquired a facsimile copy published by the Metropolitan Museum of Arts. The album is divided into four sections. Each section begins with an oration by Orpheus, which then is followed by a set of poems depicting animals, insects, sea creatures and some mythological beasts. Francis Poulenc set six of these poems. I decided to do all thirty. Why not?

The original music was composed, scored and arranged by Akira Senju, and performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir. It is here arranged to replicate the original song's instrumentation, using piccolo, flute, oboe, C trumpet, horn in F, trombone, tuba, glockenspiel, cymbal, bass drum, sleigh bells, treble & lower voices, violins 1 & 2, viola, and cello. This is an abridged version of the album recording; it is the version that appears frequently throughout the series. This piece was here arranged to accurately dictate that version.
