Ballet Synopsis: Evil Snow Sprites make a mirror that reflects all that is mean and evil. When it shatters, its splinters drift to the far corners of the world. Gerde and Kai are two poor children who live in Copenhagen in the early 19th Century. They live innocently with their parents and Grandmother and tend a rooftop rose garden. One winter night Kai meets the Snow Queen and a splinter from the mirror enters his eye. The Snow Queen returns and abducts Kai. Although accepted as dead, Gerde deeply feels otherwise and begins her quest to find her friend, traveling through the four seasons, sometimes beautiful and sometimes frightening. The Lady of Spring takes her as an addition to her fantastical garden filled with tales and dreams of the flowers who dwell there. But when Gerde sees the rose on Spring's bonnet she wakes from her enchantment. Her tears spring back the roses who tell her Kai is not dead. She flees from the garden. Gerde grows up in the wilderness and a crow says that he has seen Kai at the Palace of the Queen of Summer. They hurry there to find a magnificent ball in progress. Gerde is introduced to the Kai lookalike but knows something is not right. The Queen of Summer helps Gerde on her way and lends her a coach and gives her a magic red rose that will never fade.As coach searches for Kai, it enters the season of Autumn and is accosted by robber girl and a band of theives. They dance in an rousing, energetic dance taunting her. When the morning comes Gerde tells her fellow captive animals of her quest to find Kai and that all hope is lost. The pigeons finally tell Gerde that Kai was abducted by the Snow Queen many years ago. The robber girl overhears them and has a change of heart letting her go with her reindeer to the far North of the Snow Queen.Gerde finds Kai in the palace of the Snow Queen piecing together the evil mirror. She gives Kai up for dead but leaves the rose of summer beside him. Kai spots the rose and he sheds a tear. Published by Samuel Warren Hatch (A0.1025435). Piano Sonata No. 1 in E Major is the first series of concert piano works by S. Warren Hatch, written during his undergraduate study at Campbell University. Each movement is distinct, in that each of them is composed in a different form, utilizes different key changes and scales, and takes influence from a different period in classical music. While there is no theme that connects them to one another, they are all in the key of E Major and consist mostly of a waltz-like feeling. III. A Reflection of Passing depicts the shifting aspects about death as a person matures. It’s a piece that came from a time of great loss and much grieving. It begins with an innocent, hopeful understanding of death, followed by a major tone shift, where there is an odd utilization of the piano: the performer sings into the piano while holding down the sustain pedal, which vibrates certain overtones, producing what sounds like a distant choir. The piece closes with a triumphant, hopeful melody, borrowed from a song written by S. Warren Hatch when he was in high school.Composer Notes- Be sure to ensure that the stage hands lift the piano lid before the sonata’s start, as the strings will need to be exposed in order for you to sing into the piano’s body during A Reflection of Passing. For that section (page 22) you will need to face and sing directly into the strings while holding down the sustain pedal for the entire page. If you are playing with the sheet music (don’t worry, I’m not shaming you) simply slide the music holder in order to expose the part of the strings that are closest to you. For this sonata, I encourage you to find your own voice in these pieces. Your own interpretation should align with how you most relate to the message/story they’re telling. This could be using the una corda (leftmost) pedal during lighter sections to further differentiate them, or having a heavier rubato to strengthen the impact of certain phrases. As long as you bring these pieces to life, then it has my stamp of approval.

Think of the story behind this music as about a young lady who  just loves the waltz, and loves to sing and dance to its lilting triple time.  Her dancing partner is a dashing, ever so handsome young man, who sweeps her off her feet and takes her breath away with his charm and grace, as they float away on the wings of A Dance In Triple Time!I originally composed this piece as a little warm up ditty for my chorus, but as I worked the melody and the harmony, it grew into just a little bit more than a warm up exercise. We always enjoyed singing this little piece for our audiences. And they always enjoyed hearing it. One caveat; The lyrics go by quickly! Leads, use your best diction and pronunciation, so the story doesn't get lost. Harmony voices, keep the melody prominent, by always singing your la-las at least one dynamic notch below the melody!Choose the waltz tempo of your choice - very relaxed to very lilting in 1.  Base your choice on being able to deliver the lyrics with great clarity, especially in the faster passages. Be sure to observe the accelerandos, broadening tempos, a tempos, legatos, and staccatos. They all have much to do with delivering the style of this piece, especially the off beat la-las. Some pairs are staccato, in other pairs, the first la is legato, the second la is staccato.The metronome marks more accurately describe the accelerandos and broadenings. On the repeat at 11, a slight increase in the tempo will add urgency and intensity. Keep the melody prominent as it moves to different voices, beginning at 37. Jerome Kern’s first big hit (with Herbert Reynolds), this number from the 1914 Broadway musical, “The Girl from Utah,†helped change the trajectory of American love songs away from European influence (waltzes, flowery lyrics) and more toward the musical styles of the time. Its 4/4 meter shows influence of the American musical styles of the era (ragtime, fox trot) as well as a move toward American vernacular lyrics. Jerome Kern’s first big hit (with Herbert Reynolds), this number from the 1914 Broadway musical, “The Girl from Utah,†helped change the trajectory of American love songs away from European influence (waltzes, flowery lyrics) and more toward the musical styles of the time. Its 4/4 meter shows influence of the American musical styles of the era (ragtime, fox trot) as well as a move toward American vernacular lyrics. And they always enjoyed hearing it. One caveat; The lyrics go by quickly! Leads, use your best diction and pronunciation, so the story doesn't get lost.
