The pipers are proud in Kildare and Athy; there's no better music found under the sky. And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. The fiddlers are famous from Bantry to Cork. The rake of their reels would make the lame walk. But still, at the close of a fine Autumn day, I packed up my bags and I went on my way - searching for fortune but finding low pay. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. Far up the west coast, in Aran and Clare, there's harpers to bring you a magical aire. I listened, enthralled, till the Winter came on, then pulled up my boots - and soon I was gone - searching for fortune for still I had none. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! Synge's 1904 play 'Riders of the Storm' and quotes a line from it. It alludes to three images from nature - the wind, sun and rain as pictures of God's care and provision: The wind can be likened to the Spirit of God, which helps move you along on rough days. The sun's warmth in the prayer reminds us of the tender mercies of God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven. The soft falling rain speaks of God's provision and sustenance. Finally, we are reminded that we are held safe in God's loving hands as we travel on our journey through life.

The Ballad of Flora and James is a re-working of a traditional broadside ballad, the original of which can be found in the archives at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The original tells the story of Flora, a young girl who dresses as a man in order to follow her boyfriend to sea - but this modern day version has roles reversed, and it's James who joins the war to be with Flora.Cat's clever arrangement brings this story firmly in to the modern era, and affectionately pokes fun at the 'traditional' gender roles often featured in this type of song. It's a hearty song; funny, and fun to sing, and suitable for all ages.There is NO MINIMUM ORDER quantity on this arrangement, because I arrange all my songs to be taught by ear. I've taught this one myself to my community choir and they have really enjoyed singing it - I hope you do too!

The Ballad of William Taylor (or Willy Taylor), Bold William Taylor or The Female Lieutenant (as it is sometimes called) tells the story of a woman who is deserted on her wedding day by William Taylor because he has been pressed ganged and sent away to sea. She decides to follow after him and disguises herself as a man in order to sign up. Her identity is discovered when her tunic bursts open during a battle revealing her womanhood! She tells the Captain she is looking for William Taylor and he tells her where to find him. However, William Taylor has found a new lady. In fact you might like to try having all the voices on the melody for the first chorus to establish it.
