Both Michael Row the Boat Ashore and There is a Balm in Gilead are Afro-American Spirituals. Charles Pickard Ware wrote down Michael Row the Boat Ashore after listening to slaves sing it as they worked on the plantations or rowed across water. The words ask Archangel Michael for help. There is a Balm in Gilead comes from both the Old and New Testaments. Unitarian Minister, George Willis Cooke wrote a song in the later 1800’s that has become a campfire mainstay. I chose to list it as Down in My Heart. It’s also known as I’ve Got the Joy, I’ve Got that Joy, Joy, Joy and Joy, Joy, Joy. This arrangement is playable on either Lever or Pedal harps. Dynamics are clearly marked.Â

The Carter Family first recorded this 1860 parlor song, I’ll Twine ‘Mid the Ringlets (Lyrics by Maud Irving, Music by Joseph Webster) in 1928. They changed the title to Wildwood Flower and also changed the lyrics. The words have continued to evolve over the decades and it developed into a Bluegrass standard. The 8 bar melody has remained the same. This arrangement intertwines the melody with vines of colorful harmony, descants, interludes, PDLT, slapping on the soundboard and etouffee. The melody is shared equally between the parts. Each part is of equal difficulty. Dynamics are clearly marked.Â

She was the daughter of Thomas, the Fourth Earl of Westmeath. When she married Francis Bermingham, the Twenty-first Baron of Athenry – she became Lady Athenry. Donal Sullivan lists Lady Athenry as a patron of Turlough O’Carolan. I imagine Lady Athenry as a dainty, energetic, colorful and interesting woman. Her household was a place Turlough enjoyed visiting.

Aura Lea, published in Cincinnati before the Civil War began in 1861, became a favorite of both sides of the conflict to sing around campfires. It was performed by minstrel groups, glee clubs, barbershop quartets and radio stations. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point set new lyrics to the melody, renaming it Army Blue. The title morphed into Aura Lee along the way. It has appeared in movies and TV shows.In 1956 Elvis recorded his version of the melody with new lyrics, naming it Love Me Tender. Harp I is playable on either Lever or Pedal Harps. Harp II is for Pedal Harp. The melody is evenly divided between parts.

Published by O'Meara Music (A0.803725). In 1889 Johann Strauss, Jr. gave his Berlin publisher, Fritz Simrock, a new waltz entitled Hand in Hand. It was a celebration of the toast made by Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I during a visit to German Kaiser Wilhelm II. The toast stressed the necessity of bonds of friendship between the two nations. Mr Simrock suggested changing the title to Kaiser-Waltzer to please the two emperors. However, when it was published, only the Austrian Imperial crown was emblazoned on the title page! This stunning arrangement has both a pedal harp and lever harp version that is intended to be performed together. They only differ in the pedal/lever markings and an occasional harmony note. The dynamics are clearly marked.

He used a haunting melody that he’d heard during his travels through Appalachia with a poem that had been published in 1811. He titled the hymn Wondrous Love. The melody has now been traced back to an English Ballad (Roud #5089). In the Dorian mode, the sixth scale degree is lowered in the harmony some of the time. Arranged for Lever or Pedal Harps, dynamics and pedal changes are clearly marked. Lever Harp I will set one flat at the beginning and leave it on throughout the entire piece.Â

The Carter Family first recorded this 1860 parlor song, I’ll Twine ‘Mid the Ringlets (Lyrics by Maud Irving, Music by Joseph Webster) in 1928. They changed the title to Wildwood Flower and also changed the lyrics. The words have continued to evolve over the decades and it developed into a Bluegrass standard. The 8 bar melody has remained the same. This arrangement intertwines the melody with vines of colorful harmony, descants, interludes, PDLT, slapping on the soundboard and etouffee. The melody is shared equally between the parts. Each part is of equal difficulty. Dynamics are clearly marked.Â

The B Version has thinner lines and allows more time for placing the fingers. The purpose is to permit harpists of various playing levels to enjoy performing together. This arrangement travels from the key of G, through the key of C to the key of F. The melody is equally divided between parts. Dynamics are clearly marked.  You will receive the B Version Harp I part. Beethoven was influenced by the writings of Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, a German poet, playwright, and historian. His 1785 poem, An die Freude (Ode to Joy), spoke to Beethoven of perfect, eternal spiritual bliss and the unity of nature.Â

This download includes the score, Harp I and Harp II. The harp parts are two pages each. My harp duets are consistent in their configuration. Harp I part is the most difficult, and can be played on lever or pedal harp. Harp II part is generally easier, and lap harp friendly. So this duet is suitable for student/teacher duet practice, and for almost any combination of two harp players. Or even an ensemble with several playing each part.
