Saturniid Nocturnes & Reveries is an intermediate level piece composed for the double-strung harp Saturniid Nocturnes for double strung harp is inspired by the North American Saturniidae moths which emerge from their cocoons with expansive, colorful wings, but without the ability to eat, so they die within days. I have attempted to express through music this irony of freedom and beauty that is fleeting and tragic. Reveries for double strung harp is a set of three whimsical pieces that explores the harmonic potential of this instrument. It combines a familiar tonal world with fanciful chromatic shifts.

Ottorino Respighi, an eminent Italian composer, teacher, director, and musician, was born in Bologna July 9, 1879 and died April 18, 1936. Respighi's style of composition is a highly sucessful blend of songful melodies with full and rich harmonies; he was one of the best masters of modern Italian music. His power of evocation of the Italian scene and his ability to sustain interest without prolixity is incontestable. His many works include operas, ballets, choral works, orchestral works, and chamber works. Notturno, which he composed in 1905, came from a set of six solo piano pieces, Notturno being #3. This arrangement, for flute and harp, was arranged from his piano solo of Notturno, which shows signs of Impressionism.

Cnidarian Nocturnes for pedal harp solo explores a delicate world of sound that references as a metaphor the sea creatures classified as Cnidaria which drift through the sea at the will of the waves. The contrast between the weight of the massive waves and the cradling of these delicate, ethereal creatures brought to my mind the fragility of life and the forces to which each individual is subjected , along with the meaning and loss that is derived from this journey. The harp was chosen as an ideal voice for this sound world because of its delicate array of colors, its wide pitch range, and ability to create wavelike movement in the harmonies. It is for the intermediate to advanced level of playing.

Nocturne in C-Sharp Minor, written originally for piano by Frederic Francois Chopin. He wrote this piece for his older sister as a practice piece before she started on one of his concertos. This was first published 26 years after Chopin's death. This piece has been re-arranged to be played on a Pedal Harp. A few changes had to be made since it is very difficult to play chromatic scales on the harp. This has been arranged to make those chromatic scales possible. This is a difficult piece to play, but all pedal changes are notated in the music and where they need to happen. Overall a very melancholy, but beautiful piece with a lot of dynamic expression. .

My double-strung harp arrangement in the dorian mode has rolled, echoed chords, highlighting the depth of sound we can get from having two sets of strings. The accompaniment hand traverses the entire range of the harp, often overlapping the melody hand.Key and range: A dorian (one sharp). 21x2 strings. G below middle C through F. Rolled accompaniment chords often contain the same note as the melody, creating a rolled echo. Some chords that aren’t rolled have doubled notes in both hands, creating depth. The repetition of LH patterns makes this a great piece to learn overlapping hands with.Characteristics: Neither hand needs to place more than an octave spread. There are some four-note chords (always LH 1-3-5-8). The RH has almost no chords. Few of the chords are inversions. There are very few sixteenth notes; no more than three played together with one hand. The LH has two long-run patterns (1-5-8-9-10 and 1-5-8-9) which can be played with cross-unders or a wandering thumb. The RH has a few cross-overs/unders.Finger placement: Finger number suggestions are provided for key phrases. Numbers above the notes are suggestions for the RH (marked with R or R# when they occur in the bottom staff). Numbers below the notes are suggestions for the LH (marked with L or L# when they occur in the top staff).Notation: Chord symbols are provided. Treble clef is used for both staves, with 8va for very high notes. Rolled accompaniment chords often contain the same note as the melody, creating a rolled echo. Some chords that aren’t rolled have doubled notes in both hands, creating depth. The repetition of LH patterns makes this a great piece to learn overlapping hands with.Characteristics: Neither hand needs to place more than an octave spread. There are some four-note chords (always LH 1-3-5-8). The RH has almost no chords. Few of the chords are inversions. There are very few sixteenth notes; no more than three played together with one hand. The LH has two long-run patterns (1-5-8-9-10 and 1-5-8-9) which can be played with cross-unders or a wandering thumb. The RH has a few cross-overs/unders.Finger placement: Finger number suggestions are provided for key phrases. Numbers above the notes are suggestions for the RH (marked with R or R# when they occur in the bottom staff). Numbers below the notes are suggestions for the LH (marked with L or L# when they occur in the top staff).
