Maire Dhall, also known in English as Blind Mary is a tune attributed to Carolan in several sources, and written in honour of the harpist and teacher Maire Dhall of Roscommon. It is a slow and rambling tribute, and very beautiful played in an expressive style as if it were sung in the Irish sean-nos style. There are some ornaments, and alternate versions of the melody, and a somewhat older or classical feel to the arrangement. It could be an elegant slower piece in the middle of a slightly faster set - many people say the tune affects them quite emotionally, so I tried to write to enhance that.

Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889431). Blind Mary was composed by O`Carolan, it is an irresistible enchanting little piece. In this file there are 3 versions for 3 different sizes of harps. One in F for a big harp, one in Eb for medium size and the one in F for a little 3 oct. lap harp a very similar one to the one that usually O`Carolan used to perform. The melodic bass played with the left hand demands a little bit of coordination but the arrangement is focused in the main melody and is very easy to perform in all this 3 versions. The piece is so beautiful that I recommend it to be played always twice in a row. Some interpretation symbols are used as a performance suggestion. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. Feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills and taste. Have fun! The score was written on Finale. The sound file is the version in Eb for a medium size diatonic harp, it was produced with samplers from Garritan and conceived merely as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Known as „The Last Irish Bard, he is an Honored and Beloved Irish composer. He became an itinerante harpist after losing his eyesight to smallpox. Extremely talented, he composed a vast repertoire of music and left also a well known number of real good stories to tell due to his rich temperament, social caracter and spicy sense of humor. In the case of this song, I made it easier than my regular lap harp version by completely changing the time signatures, making the music easier to read/count for the not as advanced player. These are two beautiful O'Carolan tunes which go very well together. They are both in 6/8 so jig-time. The first should be played a little slower than the second. They are in the key of G, though the second tune is in a modal key. One only needs the F sharp lever. There are no key changes. These pieces have fingering throughout (optional) and some dynamics (optional). Because of the speed of the second jig I reckon one should be of intermediate ability to play this well. Of course with different fingering one could play this on the piano as well.
