String Orchestra - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by trad. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 20th Century, European, Patriotic. Score, Set of Parts. 10 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Londonderry Air arranged for String Orchestra.<br> <br> A big band version of the song is used as the theme for The Danny Thomas Show (a.k.a. Make Room For Daddy).<br> <br> "Danny Boy" was used to represent Northern Ireland at the start of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, sung by a choir of children on the Giant’s Causeway.<br> <br> On November 25, 2014, the Vancouver Canucks used the song in honor of the recently deceased Pat Quinn, who played and worked in many executive capacities for the team.<br> <br> There are various theories as to the true meaning of "Danny Boy". Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora.<br> <br> The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics ("Eily Dear"), with the instructions that "when sung by a man, the words in italic should be used; the song then becomes "Eily Dear", so that "Danny Boy" is only to be sung by a lady". In spite of this, it is unclear whether this was Weatherly’s intent.<br> <br> Why the name Londonderry Air? Londonderry and Derry refer to the same place, a city in the north of Ireland, and also to the surrounding county. Supposedly the city of Derry was founded by St. Colmcille, although archaeological evidence shows that people were living there thousands of years earlier. There is an excellent museum in the city, which is worth a visit if you want to find out more. The name of the city was actually "Doire", corrupted to "Derry" by people who can’t pronounce Irish. It thought to derive from an Irish root meaning "oak tree".<br> <br> Moving quickly along in history, about a millenium later the government of England was having a difficult time colonizing Ireland because of the fierce and warlike clans living there, especially in the north of the country, Ulster. The monarchs of England, almost all of whom were notorious cheapskates, were continually looking about for ingenious ways to conquer places without actually having to put up the money themselves, or run the risk of unpopularity if they lost. In the case of Ireland, some of these schemes of the "Brish gummit" (as it is termed nowadays in Ulster) are still producing unfortunate long-term consequences.<br> <br> In 1608, King James I gave the city of Derry to the City of London corporation. I guess the deal could be summed up by saying that if the City of London could figure out a way to chase all the inhabitants out of Derry, they would be allowed to keep the loot, minus a percentage for the King of course. If they lost, well too bad. In celebration of this historic agreement, the name of Derry was officially changed to Londonderry. (For further information, check out the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s History of Derry.)<br> <br> The linguistic outcome of all this today is that, if you think that King James’s deal with the City of London was a good idea, you call both the city and county "Londonderry". If you do, you are probably a supporter of the Unionist movement that seeks to keep Ulster a part of the United Kingdom. If you think it was a bad idea, you call both "Derry", and you are probably a supporter of the Irish Nationalist cause. Or you might just be someone who thinks it’s confusing for kings to be going around changing the names of places all the time for no good reason.<br> <br> You can find plenty of discussion about the political side of the question elsewhere, but here let’s look at the musical side. We have an air, collected in county Derry/Londonderry, and it doesn’t have a title. What do we call it?<br> <br> If you were a proper Victorian, there’s no way you were going to call it the Londonderry Air, much less the Derry Air, because of the improper sentiments that these titles might suggest. My parents tell me that in their youth in Australia, it was usually called the Air from County Derry. (This would, I suppose, support Winston Churchill’s theory that Australia was inhabited by "convicts and Irishmen".)<br> <br> My mother also sends the following information, referring to an arrangement of the tune by the Australian composer Percy Grainger:<br> <br> Just another note about Danny Boy, that I grew up in Australia believing to be the Air from County Derry. We were looking through some LP’s last night (back to vinyl yet!) and found a Mercury Wing Classical Favorites stereo LP SRW18060, COUNTRY GARDENS and other favorites by Percy Grainger {played by} Eastman-Rochester Pops, Frederick Fennell, conducting. The cover notes included the following: "Irish Tune from County Derry was harmonised in memory of Irish childhood friends in Australia." Considered by many to be Grainger’s masterpiece of harmonization, the tune was collected many years ago by Miss Jane Ross of New Town, Limavady, Ireland. Grainger has set it for many instrumental combinations. So there’s another variant on the name for it. It doesn’t say who wrote the notes, but the bits in quotes for each of the works on the record are Grainger’s original comments.<br> <br> The references to Londonderry Air that I’ve seen don’t go back any earlier than the late 1930s. For example, the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) in February 1940. Bing Crosby’s version was recorded in July 1941 (reference). (So many different things I could check up on!) Londonderry was an important American naval base during WWII, but the US hadn’t come into the war in 1940.<br> <br> Need an anthem fast? THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSICFor Piano & Celloby ROBERT VAN HORNEPiano 10 pages / Cello 3 pagesApprox. Time: 5:10 On Saturday afternoon, March 26, 2011, Robert Van Horne, pianist and composer was invited to a special meeting of Bay Area business people. Their purpose - wanting to help the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan on March 11th. The meeting was organized by Mr. Alex Kurosawa, president of KPMF and held in San Jose, CA. At the end of the meeting and after much discussion about holding a series of concerts with all funds going to the disaster victims, it was suggested that Robert compose a new song for the project that would let those afflicted in Japan, know they would not be forgotten. I was so inspired by the dedication and volunteerism of all the people at the meeting, Robert says, that I went home and composed a new piece of music with the title: THERE IS HOPE THROUGH MUSIC. A video of the first recorded vocal version was sent to Alex Kurosawa on Friday, April 8, 2011. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrefmPk3lKE A choral arrangement premiered on December 10, 2011 in Sunnyvale, CA at a Benefit Concert for Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_oR23kPE0Q Mr. Shigeo Tachibana recorded a very special shakuhachi version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFcQfEzKCTk In addition, another unique performance by TMAP was presented with shakuhachi, koto, soprano and piano at the Zenkei Temple on April 1, 2012 in Japan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9ILnn8-EUk The music has been arranged for Piano/Vocal, Mixed Chorus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9ILnn8-EUk This cello and piano arrangement was featured on October 15, 2011 at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley by cellist Oleg Sendetsky and pianist Mutsuko Dohi and presented by the Kurosawa Piano Music Foundation. The music is dedicated to give hope to all those affected by the March 11, 2011. It is an emotionally sounding work of music. Robert Van Horne is a long standing member of ASCAP. Instrumental Duet Cello,Guitar,Instrumental Duet - Digital Download SKU: A0.942094 Composed by Apostolos Paraskevas. 20th Century,Contemporary,Halloween,World. Score and parts. 29 pages. Silver Sickle Publications #6092705. Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.942094). A Sunny Day in Hell - for Guitar and Cello A small introduction from the guitar opens the work which brings the introductory material as a feeling of a sluggish and almost joyful day, an opening with a dark feeling. Almost like a sunny day in hell, I could say. This opening material gives its turn to a fast-fierce agitated section in where the guitar mostly plays 16th triplets and the cello introduces an exotic dance-like tune. A limping dance, I must add given the title’s influence. Almost like a small party in hell. The following slow section brings up a sad melancholic mood where both instruments share new material with an evocation of a past happy life. The work ends with the main fast material in a variation form. It was my intention to compose a friendly work for performers and audiences.First twist:Performers: prepare audience for an upcoming performance twist/surprise which will not come (at least not during performance). If or when members of the audience later ask about it, performers should assure them that the twist is still an upcoming great event. Have them re-live the performance as they wonder for years to come...If members of the audience should coerce or threaten you by force, you may reveal the twist: In the unfortunate event that you may later end up in hell, this performance guarantees that you will have at least one Sunny Day in HellOptional Second twist:Performers, could as an extra touch, wear fangs (teeth of a vampire or devil) and after performance could reveal them by either biting the lip or casually smiling or yawning at the audience. No audience preparation is needed for this twist. Although wearing Fangs during the performance, could be a nuisance to some performers, they could give to the work a special extra bite. As a variation, fangs could be wore after the end of the performance. Apostolos Paraskevas, Boston 2008

Cello,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1280306 Composed by Brian Strohmetz. Chamber,Classical,Contemporary. Score and part. 46 pages. Brian Strohmetz #871769. Published by Brian Strohmetz (A0.1280306). Around the Bend is a journey of tranquility, adventure, and discovery down a section of the Monocacy Creek in Bethlehem, PA. The first section of the music that appears throughout the piece is a simple melody that is reminiscent of a simple art song. It represents the river flowing along peacefully on a beautiful day. Occasionally, we come across an area where the water hits a small obstacle that causes the water to change its path and speed. We hear this as violent 16th note interruptions in the music. The river then returns to its natural flow and pace. Further along we encounter a small waterfall area with rapids and obstacles. The music cascades and has a rhythmic drive representing the rapids and the swift moving waters. After we have traversed the rapids, we return to the calm waters of the river as it continuously flows peacefully. The next portion of our journey is inspired by a specific and unique section of the Monocacy, where we find the hidden ivy. Trees surround the creek. When looking into them, at a certain angle, you will find a tree covered in ivy hidden amongst the other trees. When we reach this point in our journey, the music starts off mysteriously as though looking through the trees. When we find the hidden ivy, we are greeted by a majestic melody that reflects this hidden beauty. The piano plays a rising arpeggio repeatedly, reflecting the ivy’s goal to grow higher and closer to the sky. Once we pass the ivy, we return to the peacefully flowing river. We approach a bend in the river that we cannot see beyond. There is a bit of trepidation, but as we start to go around the bend, everything ends peacefully, and we know everything will be fine. The river will keep moving and we will survive. For Cello & Piano.

Children,Classical,Holiday,Standards,Traditional. Score. 3 pages. Katherine L Fraser #912306. Published by Katherine L Fraser (A0.1324114). This classic tune offers just enough variety to make it enjoyable for both cellists. The high A can be played as a harmonic. Add more space between the notes from Measures 1 through 9, and then play the remaining measures more legato. If you prefer not to play and many more at the end, finish on the first note of Measure 24. The double stop in the last measure is optional: you can simply play an A.  I hope you enjoy!!!

Piano Accompaniment, Dan CutchenTime: approximately 6:00And Can It Be That I Should Gain? is a Christian hymn written by Charles Wesley. And Can It Be was written in 1738 to celebrate Wesley's conversion, which he regarded as having taken place on May 21 of that year. This beautiful hymn has been popular and enduring. And Can It Be That I Should Gain is perhaps one of the most joyfully poignant hymns penned by Charles Wesley (1707-1788). On Whitsunday (Pentecost), May 21, 1738, three days before his brother John experienced his heart strangely warmed,’ Charles was convalescing in the home of John Bray, a poor mechanic, when he heard a voice saying, In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, arise, and believe, and thou shalt be healed of all thy infirmities. The voice was most likely Mr. Bray’s sister who felt commanded to say these words in a dream.Anglican hymn writer Timothy Dudley-Smith, notes that the following then happened:Charles got out of bed and opening his Bible read from the Psalms: He have put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God, followed by the first verse of Isaiah 40, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. He wrote in his journal, I have found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in the hope of love Christ (Dudley-Smith, 1987, 1).The statement from Mr. Bray’s sister sparked within Charles a conviction like he had never felt before. Moved and convicted in spirit, Charles wrestled with these words until he came to rest in his faith, knowing that it is by faith we are saved (Ephesians 2:8).Soon after this conversion experience, he wrote two hymns in celebration of the amazing love he had come to know: And Can It Be that I Should Gain and Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin? (United Methodist Hymnal, 342)There has been some debate as to which hymn was written first, but most current scholarship accepts the latter as the first hymn written by Charles after his conversion experience. No matter its place in the chronology of Wesley's output, And Can It Be has been and remains one of his most remarkable hymns, expressing like no other the rapturous joy of receiving salvation. And Can It Be That I Should Gain. (+)
Cello,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548509 Composed by Wade. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3388103. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548509). O Come All Ye Faithful arranged with new harmony for the final verse. Score: 3 pages, part: 1 page. O Come, All Ye Faithful O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it, but one theory is that it was originally composed by King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) and revised by John F. Wade and John Reading. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. The oldest manuscript from 1751, is owned by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. Lyrics The English translation O Come, All Ye Faithful was certainly written by Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841. This translation is the most common in English speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Often, various verses are omitted because otherwise, the song is just too long. Some believe the first Latin lyrics were written by St. Bonaventure (13th century) or King John IV of Portugal in the 17th. Though others think it was written by the Cistercian monks. King John IV King John IV of Portugal was called The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he was also a composer and music journalist. King John built a very large music library. Unfortunately, the library was ruined in 1755 because of the massive earthquake of Lisbon. In addition to his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context As mentioned above, verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point though, some of the verses may be unsuitable for whatever of the church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday, but not other Sundays. Similarly, other verses are used according to whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

Individual part. 3 pages. Sarah Cellobat Chaffee #6101121. Published by Sarah Cellobat Chaffee (A0.526244). This arrangement for solo cello maintains the fun upbeat tempo and dynamic contrasts of the original, and it's pretty much guaranteed to get everybody singing along! This chart was originally written for a wedding reception, but it will also be perfect for pop concerts, solo & ensemble contests, parties, corporate events, or any occasion when you need some throwback rock. Sarah Cellobat Chaffee #4824391. Published by Sarah Cellobat Chaffee (A0.526105). *INSTRUMENTATION: 2 CELLOS*Welcome to your new favorite chart to play with a cello buddy! This arrangement for two cellos of the Irish traditional tune Whiskey In The Jar is anything but traditional. Unlike other versions that are entirely made up of the song's melody line repeated over a basic accompaniment, this chart features a new form, fun dynamic and octave changes, and intertwines original solo and fiddle breakdown sections in between the verses (these aren't too difficult to play, but seem fast and impressive enough to make your audience's jaw drop!). This will be fun to play and exciting to listen to -- your audience is guaranteed to get up and dance! It's a must-have for St. Patrick's Day, of course, but also great for parties, events, solo & ensemble contests, or any other occasion that needs an upbeat Irish vibe. Rated advanced-intermediate for a handful of interesting syncopated rhythms and some fast finger work, this arrangement will be playable for students and sightreadable for professionals. Composed by Various. Arranged by David McKeown. Baroque, Concert, Romantic Period, Standards, Wedding. Score and part. 24 pages. David McKeown #4594709. Published by David McKeown
The Wedding Album is a collection of four beautiful and timeless wedding favourites, arranged for Solo Cello with Piano accompaniment. Whether for that Special Day, for a recital, or for your own entertainment, these arrangements are ideal for players at an intermediate level or higher. The 24-page file includes the piano accompaniments and the separate solo parts at the end. <br> <br> Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. <br> <br> The Bridal March was written by Richard Wagner in 1850, scored for orchestra and chorus, and opening the third act of his opera, Lohingren. It is best known in the English-speaking world as "Here Comes the Bride". Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since.<br> <br> The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on the"trumpet stop". Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. <br> <br> Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. This humorous solo cello piece was written while the composer was an undergraduate student at the Boston Conservatory of Music (now the Boston Conservatory at Berklee). One day the composer and a cellist friend of his were walking down a sidewalk in Kenmore Square when, all of a sudden, a looney man jumped into the busy traffic on Commonwealth Avenue playing a melody on a slide flute. The theme which opens this piece is that tune. The music that follows depicts him darting around creating chaos with cars honking their horns at him, etc. This is a fun piece. Enjoy!
