In beginning this work, I attempted to create a dark and beautiful melody in several lesser explored modes. While by itself the melody is quite interesting, the addition of the piano accompaniment and the setting make the strange feel more familiar. As the piece moves into the middle section, the melody and harmony also move to a more familiar major setting. The Moon Song has also worked very well as accompaniment for one or more contemporary dancers.The piece is written in a flamenco rhythm called siguiriyas. It may look complicated on the page, but is counted more simply in 5 beats, with three short and two long beats: [1] and [2] and [3] and uh [4] and uh [5] and In this case, the 1, 2, and 5 are the short beats and the 3 and 4 are long beats. This pattern repeats regularly throughout the piece, though there are a couple of extra bars interspersed to allow for breathing space at the end of certain phrases.The piece was inspired by the early 20th century Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca's poem of the same name, hence the use of the flamenco rhythm. The poem's dark, moody nature fits the cello's character very well.

Having lived in Brazil during my teen-age years, I inevitably continue to return to the wonderful music of that country for inspiration: the chôros of Ernesto Nazareth, Jacob do Bandolim, Pixinginha, and Heitor Villa-Lobos. The first movement begins with a slow, dark introduction before the love song emerges .... The second movement is a lively samba. As the title indicates, it is a little samba infused with Bach-like counterpoint, although a bit crazier. Villa-Lobos might find this amusing .... The third movement is a slow meditation for the cello on a passacaglia-like theme in the piano. The last movement, Mais uma vêz (meaning One Mo' Time in English), is a samba like the second movement, but it is set more homophonically, more dance-like in character .... Transcriptions and arrangements were quite popular and effective means for a romantic composer to promote new works, reach a wider playing audience or boost sales of sheet music. Brahms was certainly not a stranger to this practice: the composer himself produced many transcriptions for piano or piano duo, but also versions of clarinet sonatas and the cello e-minor sonata for viola. The beautiful first violin sonata exists in a version for cello by one of Brahms’ most prolific and favourite arranger Paul Klengel - but perhaps it is unfair to ask a pianist to re-learn that piece in the new key of D-major. In comparison to the boisterous and vigorous Op. 99 cello sonata, the d-minor violin sonata offers an introspective drama of a restless composer, well suited to the darker voice of the cello. With the constant advancements in playing technique and modern cello strings, the balance is less of a problem. Thus, the piano part remains unchanged, and subtle changes in cello register can be implemented to utilize the whole range and character of the instrument, while keeping the integrity of the original ideas and musical material.

This Piano Trio Passacaglia is the “junior†companion piece to my Cello Concerto Dunkle Saiten [Dark Strings], or more precisely to the concerto’s large-dimensional introductory section with the indication “Feierlich, schreitend†[solemnly, striding]. What in the Cello concerto then inescapably culminates in a catastrophe remains in this composition ostensibly largely conflict-free. This is in fact perhaps one of my most peaceful and conflict-free compositions; it consists of half an hour of almost exclusively tonal progressions. Here, passacaglia (stepping dance!) is taken literally: the step progressions themselves become the subject of the work. This also includes pausing, not being able to progress, feeling one’s way, stumbling and taking compulsive steps forward.As familiar as the harmonic surface of the structure appears, for me the natural adaptation of the musical flow was new to a similar degree. This is my attempt to produce a linear tonal band (a horizontal) exclusively with the aid of harmonic – i.e. vertical – progressions.- Jörg Widmann.

In expressive musical pictures, Schneider describes the dark-erotic struggle of impregnation as well as the chant of the unborn. Hovering above everything is the vision of life in complete freedom like a bird. The work was premiered by the Hungarian cellist László Fenyö in 2011. Thanks to the piano score written by the composer, the work can now also be studied and performed by a duo.
