Published by David McKeown (A0.587646). Amazing Grace is perhaps the best-known and best-loved hymn in the world. The writer, John Newton, led a dissolute life as a sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style. The words he wrote in Amazing Grace are an intimate retelling of his spiritual journey. The hymn was written in 1773, and was sung to many different melodies initially, but since the mid nineteenth century it has become most closely associated with the famous folk tune melody presented here, New Britain.This version is arranged as a solo for Cello with Piano accompaniment. The melody is played four times, each verse in a different style. It is without doubt thanks to Henri Salvador’s wonderful interpretation that this old chanson from Martinique, dating from the late eighteenth century and almost a national anthem both in Martinique and Guadeloupe, has also gained such popularity in France. Published by David McKeown (A0.587663). The Trumpet Tune and Air was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite. This full version is arranged as a duet for two Cellos and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. This quartet arrangement of Allegrasco was originally planned for clarinettist Roger Heaton and violinst Alexander Balanescu - two members of the Gavin Bryars Ensemble - to perform outside the context of the group. Allegrasco, which features solo clarinet with violin obligato, is a companion arrangement to that of The Old Tower of Löbenicht where the roles are reversed and the bass clarinet is an obbligato instrument to the solo violin. In both cases the additional instruments are piano and cello, giving the same instrumentation as Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time.

My fascination with the culture of the Navajo Native Americans and their healing ceremonies based on harmony and beauty motivated me to listen to ethnographic recordings of their songs, which are customarily accompanied by rattles and drums. A number of these songs inspired me to create two works for different instrumental ensembles for students at the Conservatoire de Versailles. Both pieces represent miniature versions of ceremonial events. Thierry PécouThierry Pécou's interest in ethnomusicology is reflected in this piece. He was inspired by the culture and especially by the traditional healing ceremonies of the Navajo Native Americans which are customarily accompanied by rattles and drums. Pécou composed his miniature version of this ceremonial event for the students of the Conservatoire de Versailles. The piece is also available as a version for flauto traverse and treble recorder.
