Viola Duet Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552402 Composed by Leo Delibes (1836-1891). Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Holiday,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score. 7 pages. Jmsgu3 #6342537. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552402). Duo of the flowers from Lakme, Act I, A popular wedding selection.Leo Delibes (1836-1891) was a French composer of the Romantic period best known for his ballets and operas. He was a child prodigy and began composing music at the age of seven. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he developed a mastery of the symphonic form and wrote several pieces for the orchestra. His works for the stage are among the most popular and beloved of the Romantic era, including the ballets Coppélia and Sylvia, and the opera Lakmé.Delibes was a pioneer in the use of orchestral color and instrumental effects to enhance the dramatic narrative of his works. His works are often praised for their lyricism, graceful melodies, and colorful orchestrations. His music is considered to be a bridge between the grandiose and romantic works of the French composers before him, such as Gounod and Berlioz, and the more intimate and melodic style of composers like Debussy and Ravel.Delibes’ influence can be heard in the works of later composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev, and his music continues to be performed and enjoyed today. His contributions to music history are significant, and his works remain beloved masterpieces of the Romantic era.Léo Delibes' opera Lakmé is an opera in three acts. It was first performed in 1883 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. The libretto was written by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille. The story is set in British-occupied India and tells the story of a young Indian girl, Lakmé, who is in love with a British officer, Gerald. The story follows the couple's romantic journey, as well as the obstacles they face from Lakmé's father and the British military. The opera is best known for its beautiful score, which includes the famous aria The Flower Duet as well as the duet Lakmé! The Bell Song. The opera has been performed in opera houses all over the world and is considered one of Delibes' most popular works. The Duo des Fleurs, composed by French composer Léo Delibes, is a ballet pas de deux from the ballet Lakme, Act I. It is a beloved masterpiece of the Romantic period and is often performed as a standalone piece in many ballet performances. The piece is typically danced by two female ballet dancers and is known for its playful and lighthearted nature. The music consists of a melody that alternates between the two dancers and is often accompanied by a lighthearted waltz. The music has a strong sense of unity and connection between the two dancers, which is enhanced by the use of the same melody. The piece also features a beautiful soaring coda that gives it a sense of grandeur and beauty. The Duo des Fleurs is an exquisite piece of music and an enduring classic of the ballet repertoire.

Piano,Viola - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549837 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Concert,Easter,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3554477. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549837). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. &n.

Sonata in a Simple Scale for Viola and Piano

Piano,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1032818 Composed by Daniell Matter…

Piano,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1032818 Composed by Daniell Mattern. Contemporary. Score and part. 58 pages. Daniell Mattern #5721229. Published by Daniell Mattern (A0.1032818). Sonata in a Simple Scale for Viola and PianoThe Simple Scale of the title is a series of alternating whole steps and half steps. There are three versions; any particular note will belong to two of the three. Thus, the two scales that include C go up either a whole step from C (C D Eb F F#…) or a half step (C C# D# E F#…); the third scale excludes C entirely (B C# D E F…). These scales allow for a variety of melodies, which often take on a modal character, and familiar chords, including major, minor, and diminished.Although the scale is simple, the Sonata is not for elementary players. The viola range goes to the C two octaves above middle C and there are occasional double and triple stops and stopped harmonics, and frequent meter changes. Also, the unusual scale does not fit the standard fingering patterns for either instrument. That said, the sonata is intended to be enjoyable for proficient, rather than virtuosic, players. In the introduction to the Sonata-Allegro movement, the viola explores motives and intervals, with subtle embellishment from the piano. These phrases build to a three-octave descending presentation of the simple scale; a trill then leads into the main theme. The piano sets up a jaunty accompaniment pattern, over which the viola plays the theme in measure-long segments. The second theme is a long, legato line in the viola that spans two octaves. The viola then sets up a two-measure ostinato, joined by a lumbering piano bass, before the piano treble floats on top with a melancholy closing theme. The development section plays mostly with the main theme, shifting meters as the two instruments engage in dialog. A bridging trill takes us into the recapitulation, but now the viola plays the jaunty accompaniment pattern, and the piano has the main theme. After the return of the second theme, varied in its accompaniment, the piano presents the ostinato of the closing theme, and the viola takes the melody, leading to a quiet and playful finish. In the second movement (Song), the piano begins a slow, rather dark theme, joined by the viola, and ending in a rising question that leads into the second section. Presented simply by the viola, this lilting 7/8 theme has a folk-song quality. It is repeated and embellished several times before the first theme returns, ending in a loud and angry exclamation. The Scherzo is a 6/8 whirlwind. The viola presents rapid repeated notes punctuated with three rising or falling notes; the piano enters gradually until both are giving a forceful statement. In the middle section, the viola sets up a whirling pattern with a drone, while the piano plays a dark version of the closing theme from the first movement. The first theme returns and the movement gallops to a rapid finish. The Rondo begins with an introduction that explores octaves and trills, leading into the main theme, with slightly dissonant 4/4 viola measures alternating with 7/8 answers in the piano. Bridging measures in 5/8 take us into a relaxed, waltz-like interlude of solo viola. A fast section with a touch of fugato follows, with the main theme presented in diminution by the viola at the end. This leads into a second interlude, this one exploring octaves, trills, and clusters in unmetered fragments that the instrumentalists play at their own tempos. The viola then emerges with a confident new theme, joined after a while by the piano. The main theme then returns in a rollicking 3/4 version that brings the piece to a close.

Score and part. 62 pages. Jmsgu3 #5306365. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.551513). 1. Morning Mood, 2. Ase's Death, 3. Anitra's Dance, 4. In the Hall of the Mountain KingGrieg BackgroundIn the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.LegacyGrieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.Holberg Suite and Misc. SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Piano,Viola - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548507 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3387407. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548507). The First Noel arranged for Viola & Piano with new harmony for the final verse.Origins The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the Carols Ancient and Modern songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: Viola Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive. Stainer Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s. Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships. Diatonic Function The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends. Political Context The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk carols were composed in this era. Eminent composers in the nineteenth century began to revise and adapt them. Consequently, they revived the English carol. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1118324 Composed by Scott Joplin. Arranged by David McKeown. 20th Century,Jazz,Ragtime. Score and part. 33 pages. David McKeown #719842. Published by David McKeown (A0.1118324). Scott Joplin is celebrated as the United States’ first well-known black composer, making his name as a writer of piano rags. His life was a constant struggle with adversity, and Joplin died relatively young in 1917, at the dawn of the recording age. Few remembered Joplin’s music until a revival in the 1970s brought The Entertainer and others to the world’s attention. Nowadays Scott Joplin has taken his rightful place in the gallery of great American composers. The Rags included in this collection are, The Entertainer, The Maple Leaf Rag, The Easy Winners, The Elite Syncopations and The Favorite. They have been arranged as solos for one Viola with piano accompaniment, and include all sections of the original compositions. You will download one pdf file that contains both 22 pages of piano score and the 10 page solo part. These pieces are suitable for players at an intermediate and advanced intermediate level. Musicians will find these Ragtime solos ideal for formal and informal performances, light and fun, yet still a serious and vitally important part of the American musical heritage. The overall performance time for all five is around 25 minutes. Teachers will enjoy using these arrangements as a fun way to help with phrasing, syncopated rhythms and light articulation. Click on the YouTube link to see and hear samples from the collection. The words and music of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song in 1865 and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. In recent times Swing Low, Sweet Chariot has been adopted by the Civil Rights movement on one hand, and the England rugby team on the other. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The hymn is played three and a half times, once as a ballad, then twice in a slow rock style, before returning to the ballad at the end. Click the link above to listen to a full Youtube performance of the Clarinet version of this duet.Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, though some of the rhythms in the third verse may be a challenge for less experienced players. Piano,Viola - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549217 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Holiday,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3468034. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549217). J. S. Bach BWV 508. Bist du bei mir Bach adapted this aria from a lost Stölzel opera called Diomedes. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Chances are good, though, that the tune was a favorite of everyone in Leipzig at the time.  Lyrics When thou art near, I go with joyTo death and to my rest.O how joyous would my end be,If your fair hands      Would close my faithful eyes. - Unknown Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy are the St. John Passion, and indeed the Christmas Oratorio. Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined. Â

Viola Duet Viola - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1372266 Composed by Sophia Mackson. Classical,Contemporary. Score. 6 pages. Sophia Mackson #956545. Published by Sophia Mackson (A0.1372266). This work for two violas features soaring melodic lines and moments of fast paced demisemiquavers. It is ideal for advanced players who would like to add a piece that is very unique to their repetoire or program. A foreword from the composer:“First and foremost, this work is dedicated to Kristen Scott. It stands as a reminder of a lifelong friendship, and how strong that friendship is. Thank you for supporting me and being so wonderful. This work I began writing in May of this year, and initially it was just an improvisation for one viola. I had then realised after trying to write for Solo Viola how difficult it was, since it is such a unique instrument. I wanted to make the most of the technical and musical capabilities of the instrument, so I added another Viola. With that addition, each motif seemed to make more sense and the music just flowed. Centre is based on the concept of centring oneself, but also the beauty in being surrounded by motion; by seeing things happening around you and being able to observe. Just being allowed to exist, in a way.I’ve always been inspired by Australian composers, especially since I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by their music at different points in my life. My teacher Patricia Pollett, has been actively involved in advocating for Australian composition for the viola, including commissions, recording and performances. So, being able to take my work to our lessons was hugely thought provoking and inspiring. The insights she gave helped to access more depth and meaning within the work.†- Sophia Mackson.

Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549373 Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Sacred,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3491405. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549373). Duration: 4:55, Score: 6 pages, Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages. A very famous aria (Ombra mai fu) from XerxesSuitable for any venue requiring meditative music. Excellent choice for a recital encore. Xerxes Xerxes is, in fact, an opera seria in three acts by Handel. Moreover, Handel conducted the premiere performance in London in 1738. Handel casts the opera in Persia in 470 BC. The part of Xerxes was indeed originally sung by a soprano castrato. Nowadays, the part is generally sung by a mezzo-soprano or conversely a counter-tenor. In the first place, Xerxes sings an opening aria, Ombra mai fu to a plane tree. Handel sets this aria to one of his most truly famous melodies. Although many refer to it traditionally as Handel’s Largo, Handel has, on the contrary, clearly marked Larghetto in the score. Handel Background George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in Germany but eventually became a British citizen. Nonetheless, he was a famous Baroque composer. In fact, he became famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel studied music and, by and large, worked as a composer in Germany and Italy before moving to London. On the whole, Handel was very familiar with the contemporary music of Italy and Germany. Career in England It is essential to realize that Italian opera was all the rage in England at the time. Moreover, Handel was really good at writing them. Therefore, he started not one but three opera companies in England. Alexander's Feast was a huge success in 1736, but Handel began composing English choral works. After success with the Messiah in 1742) he certainly never again wrote an Italian opera. Consequently, he died in 1759, a treasured genius. Accordingly, the English government gave him full state honors at his funeral. Hence, he is buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Legacy Music historians agree that Handel was in general one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era.  To demonstrate, his works such as the Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remain consistently popular up to the present time. He especially composed the coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest for the coronation of George II. Nevertheless, it has specifically been performed at every succeeding British coronation since. His oratorio Solomon has by all means also continued to be prevalent. As a matter of fact, Sinfonia from act 3 was featured in the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel was particularly prolific. To enumerate, he wrote over forty operas.  Since the late 1960s, we have expressly experienced a revival of baroque music. Similarly, we have especially seen a pique of interest in historically informed musical performances. Since his death in 1779, interest in Handel's music has all in all, expanded. Â

Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549570 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Score and part. 18 pages. Jmsgu3 #3508663. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549570). Duration: ca. 2:17 Score: 10 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 5 pages. A proven audience pleaser - perfect for a recital encore! Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano.

Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549634 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3516289. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549634). Duration: ca 5:20, Score: 8 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. One of Beethoven's finest and most famous works. Program for a recital, church meditation or school program. Sonata Pathétique Op. 13 First of all, this is an arrangement of the second movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique. It seems like Beethoven wrote this piece before becoming troubled by deafness. Published in 1799, it consequently remains one of the most celebrated pieces Beethoven ever wrote. As a result of its popularity, the movement was therefore performed by Karl Haas. Hass recorded it for a popular radio show called: Adventures in Good Music. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna for the rest of his life. In his late 20s, it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently, he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies, therefore, belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony, he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano.

The piece was never published in Beethoven's lifetime and only came to light forty years after his death. Despite much debate, no-one has been able to establish who the Elise of the dedication actually was. This arrangement transcribes the piano score as a Solo for Viola with Piano accompaniment. There are five pages of piano accompaniment and a separate two page solo part included.Soloists at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The rhythms are straightforward, and there is plenty of scope for expressive, lyrical playing with subtle tempo changes. Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Instrumental Duet,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.590496 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by David McKeown. Jewish,Wedding,World. Score and parts. 5 pages. David McKeown #6022217. Published by David McKeown (A0.590496). Silver Wedding, (Die Silberne Khasene in Yiddish), is a Jewish Folk tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Clarinet and one Viola. Jewish Wedding bands, prominent in early twentieth century New York, were well placed to take advantage of the phonograph recording revolution. Accordingly, we are fortunate to have a rich record of the musical style of the time. Silver Wedding first appeared in a 1915 recording by Abe Elenkrig’s Orchestra. Elenkrig was born in Ukraine, which may point to the origins of the tune. Silver Wedding is in a Bulgar style, a happy piece designed to escort the newly-weds from the ceremony to the feast. Silver Wedding is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a short introduction and coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Silver Wedding is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around three minutes, this version of Silver Wedding is perfect for weddings, celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. Christian,Gospel,Praise & Worship,Sacred,Spiritual. Score and parts. 4 pages. David McKeown #6141187. Published by David McKeown (A0.590067). Steal Away to Jesus is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for one Clarinet and one Viola. The words and music of Steal Away to Jesus are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. The words have a meaning beyond the spiritual, with hidden references to the Underground Railway of the time that helped escaped slaves cross to Canada. In more recent times Steal Away to Jesus was arranged by Michael Tippett in 1944 and recorded famously by Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole. Steal Away to Jesus is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The song is played several times as a ballad, with ever changing accompaniment.
