Suite for Solo Viola consists of 3 varied movements. The 1st. movement is a reflective, nostalgic Prelude. This is followed by a Sarabande - a slow dance and finally an exciting Moto Perpetuo 3rd Movement. This work initially exploits the soulful character of the Viola whilst also covering the full range of the instrument in the 2nd. & 3rd. The later is a vibrant and Jubilant ending to the whole. First performed by Patrick Ireland. (c. 10 mins)Originally from Glasgow, Timothy studied at the Royal College of Music, London and the Banff Centre, Canada. He was the Pianist for the Isis Piano Trio and Ballet Creations and is now in demand as an accompanist and chamber musician having performed with artists such as Dame Sarah Connolly and Tasmin Little. He has toured widely internationally and has recorded for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM as well as TV appearances in Russia and Egypt. It isn’t completely clear where the title 7.40pm comes from. One interpretation is that 7.40pm was the time the Odessa tram conductors finished work and danced to this tune. But there are versions titled 7.40am which may refer to the time of Jewish early morning prayers. Whatever the origin, there are several Russian recordings of 7.40pm that predate the 1917 revolution.7.40pm is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments.
