Ssax(tsax)-tpt-pno-vln saxophone, trumpet, piano, violin and amplified narrator - SKU: S9.Q19663 For narrator and instrumental ensemble. Composed by John Casken. This edition: score. Egypt - destiny - D.M. Thomas - Drama - dramatic - poem - Cleopatra - Life - poetry - fate - death - dead. Downloadable, Score. Duration 25 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q19663. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19663). English. This work’s title comes from DM Thomas’s dramatic poem on an imagined episode in the life of Cleopatra. Cleopatra offers any three men from her royal court a night of unbridled passion, in return for which they must forfeit their lives the next morning. Three men step forward, the last of which is the son she had by her brother Ptolemy, whom she gave away at birth. Unaware that Cleopatra is his mother, he gives her wine laced with mandragora and makes his escape before daybreak. The grisly tale provided the composer many opportunities for dramatic characterisation. The use of a narrator necessitated an episodic structure in which the music captures the atmosphere suggested by the text, and mirrors the different moods as the journey unfolds and the three characters live out their different fates. The title Deadly Pleasures was suggested by the content of D.M. Thomas’s dramatic poem on an imagined episode in the life of Cleopatra. Cleopatra offers any three men from her royal court a night of unbridled passion, in return for which they must forfeit their lives the next morning. Three men step forward, the last of which (unbeknownst to all) is the son she had by her brother Ptolemy, whom she gave away at birth. Unaware that Cleopatra is his mother he gives her wine laced with the drug mandragora and escapes his grisly death before daybreak. The music of Deadly Pleasures skilfully captures the diff erent episodic moods of the text as the journey unfolds, and the three characters live out their diff erent fates.

Alto Flute,Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1049315 Composed by Cecile Chaminade. Arranged by Phil Beaman. Romantic Period,Standards. Score and individual part. 9 pages. Phil Beaman #653686. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1049315). Cecile Louise Chaminade (1857-1944) was a French Romantic composer and pianist. She is often overlooked as a musician yet she was the first female composer to win the Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur, France's highest award. In 1890 she wrote a piano piece whimsically titled La Lisonjera (The Flatterer). It is a great example of late Romantic writing for the masses with an eye to publishing. She is lyrical, expressive, and emotional; using dynamics, wider note ranges, and chromaticism. It exhibits her trademark of being 'passionate yet virtuosic'. I have arranged La Lisonjera for Alto Flute and Piano, keeping all of the traditional Romantic characteristics intact. I have added greater contrast between the themes, making the A theme appassionata, and reserving her molto capriccioso for the B theme which I also slow down a bit to allow for more playfulness. It is my own interpretation of articulation and simplified virtuosic passages. The accompaniment is my own reduction to allow the solo to shine freely. The arrangement is still marked as Advanced Intermediate because the range is 2 1/2 octaves and there are many articulation markings. This arrangement is perfect for Recital and Repertoire as a performance of the 'overheated emotions' of the late Romantic era. Enough virtuosity to show the violinist's technique. Accessible and enjoyable for all audiences. (3:30 minutes; 2 without repeat) 6 page score, 3 page part.

Bass Flute,Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 3 - SKU: A0.549494 Composed by Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and individual part. 20 pages. Jmsgu3 #3500875. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549494). BASS FLUTE & PIANO - Score: 11 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 5 pages. Duration: 4:20. This is a popular recital piece that would work well also in church or school programs. Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician, and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Consequently, Mendelssohn composed in the usual forms of the time - symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. To summarize, his most famous works include his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides Overture, his later Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, and his Octet for Strings. His most well-known piano pieces, by and large, are the Songs Without Words. Artistic Standing  Musical tastes change from time to time. Moreover, just such a change occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This plus rampant antisemitism brought a corresponding amount of undue criticism. Fortunately, however, his artistic inventiveness has indeed been critically re-evaluated. As a result, Mendelssohn is once again among the most prevalent composers of the Romantic era. Early Family Life Mendelssohn was, in fact, born into a prominent Jewish family. His grandfather was, notably, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix was, in fact, raised without religion. At the age of seven, he was suddenly baptized as a Reformed Christian. He was, moreover, a child musical prodigy. Nevertheless, his parents did not attempt to exploit his talent. Early Adulthood Mendelssohn was, in general, successful in Germany. He conducted, in particular, a revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, specifically with his presentation of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. Felix was truly in demand throughout Europe as a composer, conductor, and soloist. For example, he visited Britain ten times. There, he premiered, namely, many of his significant works. His taste in music was. To be sure, inventive and well-crafted yet markedly conservative. This conservatism separated him by all means from more audacious musical colleagues like Liszt, Wagner, and Berlioz. Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatoire which, to clarify, became a defender of this conservative viewpoint. Mature Adulthood Schumann notably wrote that Mendelssohn was the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most brilliant musician, the one who most clearly sees through the contradictions of the age and for the first time reconciles them. This observation points to a couple of features in particular that illustrate Mendelssohn's works and his artistic procedure. Musical Features In the first place, his musical style was fixed in his systematic mastery of the style of preceding masters. This being said, he certainly recognized and even developed early romanticism from the music of Beethoven and Weber. Secondly, it indicates that Mendelssohn sought to strengthen his inherited musical legacy rather than to exchange it with new forms and styles or replace it with exotic orchestration. Consequently, he diverged his contemporaries in the romantic period, such as Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt. Mendelssohn revered Liszt's virtuosity at the keyboard but found his music rather insubstantial.

It generally narrates biblical themes. The Messiah (HWV 56, 1741) is an oratorio about the life of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. It has 51 movements divided into three parts: the Prophecies about Jesus' birth, the Passion, and the Resurrection. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549885). Score: 12 pages, piano part: 6 pages, viola part: 4 pages. duration: ca. 5'. This is the famous wedding march from Op. 61 composed in 1842 and commonly performed as a recessional march at the end of a wedding. The piece was originally composed for orchestra then arranged for organ and performed by Mendelssohn himself. Mendelssohn: Wedding March Mendelssohn’s Wedding March is so popular that it’s difficult to imagine a wedding without it. It seems like it’s been around for eternity. In any case, it was only 150 years or so ago that the Wedding March came about. It was performed in Potsdam for the first time in 1842, as a piece of Mendelssohn’s music for the Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was first used for a wedding in 1858 Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Score and individual part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3554877. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549846). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. &n.

Connie Boss #955126. Published by Connie Boss (A0.1370786). This song is great for Lent, Palm Sunday and especially Good Friday. I have added an interesting intro. There are lots of lyrics out there, but I used the ones by Alexander and then changed some of the lyrics and added verse 2. Questions or requests, email cdboss@cvalley.netLyrics:O Sacred HeadA crown of thornsPlaced on Your HeadNow woundedO sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, now scornfully surroundedwith thorns, Your only crown;O Jesus Christ, how painfulthe thorns that pierce your headyour face is filled with sorrowas you soon face your deathO sacred Head, now woundedThey stripped you of your clothesCast lots to claim their prizesThey put you on a showYou carried the cross of burdensOf all who lived in sinYou died to save their sorrowsTheir new life would beginBe Thou my consolation,my shield when I must die;remind me of Your passionwhen my last hour draws nigh.Mine eyes shall then behold you,the cross at calvaryyou hung there for our sorrowsyou gave your life for me.

Oratorio is a genre of musical composition basically sung, being widely used, besides the orchestra, vocal solos and choir. It generally narrates biblical themes. The Messiah (HWV 56, 1741) is an oratorio about the life of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. It has 51 movements divided into three parts: the Prophecies about Jesus' birth, the Passion, and the Resurrection. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals.Bach OverviewFirst of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. HistoryBach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer. StyleIt seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top.Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. VoyagerNASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach that all the others combined.

Cello,Medium Voice,Piano - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1258631 Composed by Nicholas White. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary. 48 pages. Nicholas White Music #851889. Published by Nicholas White Music (A0.1258631). These twenty short pieces were composed between March 15 – 25, 2020, during the first days of self-isolation and social distancing brought about by the COVID 19 global pandemic. They were conceived as a set of dances and meditations, with the intention of providing music for a dance performance. The individual movements themselves are free form in construction. The countertenor (or mezzo-soprano) part is wordless, with the exception of the penultimate song “The Color Fades to Greyâ€, which serves as a poignant moment of heart-on-sleeve passion before the recapitulation of the first movement. The title of the piece, a play on the concept of 20/20 vision, written in the year 20/20, containing 20 movements, and 20 measures in each, was a gift to the tranquility of order. Having 20/20 vision does not necessarily mean you have perfect vision. 20/20 vision only indicates the sharpness or clarity of vision at a distance. Other important vision skills, including peripheral awareness or side vision, eye coordination, depth perception, focusing ability, and color vision, contribute to your overall visual ability. There is always more than one way to look at things!Â

Alto Flute,Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 2 - SKU: A0.844505 Composed by Robert Schumann. Arranged by Phil Beaman. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and individual part. 7 pages. Phil Beaman #3488991. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844505). In 1849 Robert Schumann completed a set of Romantic character pieces for piano which he named Forest Scenes. One of that set was called Roadside Inn, which I have arranged for Instrumental Solo with Piano Accompaniment. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, and themes. I took themes and fragments of themes from the original and re-ordered them into a bit of a rondo form. There are interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. Another feature is the beautiful harmonic interplay between the solo and accompaniment. To be played warmly and with passion to welcome people to your Roadside Inn. 2 1/2 minutes, 5 page score, 2 page solo partTemporary MIDI recording; a live performance will be much more expressive and free
