(In Spanish you have different declinations for masculine and femenine adjectives). The masculine version is entrador. - Second, entradora can be understood in this context as a substantivized adjective, i.e. a word that is actually an adjective, but is used as if it were a noun, like if I say Now I will play 'Entradora'. (for a more scientific explanation check yor favorite English grammar book). - Third, entradora is a wink to Argentine composer Julián Plaza, who used adjectives as one-word title of several of his milongas and tangos, for instance Nocturna, DanzarÃn, Melancólico, Melancólica, Sensiblero, Nostálgico, Disonante, Dominguera, Expresivo, Futura, Instrumental, Juguetón, Paseandera, Payadora, Solemne, Temperamental - and possibly others that I am not aware of. - And fourth, the meaning of the word entradora in the coloquial Spanish of Argentina is this one: if applied to a person, is someone that easily makes friends, that wins the trust of the people very easily, who is very charming. I applied to an object (or to a melody) it means that it is easy to grasp, that you remember it immediately (as an earworm), that is accessible and uncomplicated. - Oh, there is a fifth point: are you native (or good) English speaker? After all this explanation do you come to an understandable translation of this word, Entradora? Passacaglia (2000-2012) duet 6 minutes This piece also exists in versions for organ (my original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001). The piano duet version was finally completed in 2012. The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes). Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨ - F G - D E¨ - B C - F G - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.

After several years of teaching I realized that students at different levels often wanted to play the same songs. But one size does not fit all when it comes to “Easy Piano,” and I did not have five versions of Jingle Bells at my fingertips!So I began arranging songs for in-studio use. Sometimes I ended up with 3 or 4 different levels of a particular song. My preferred method book is Faber’s Piano Adventures, so I used that as a guide for creating my arrangements. Every title I publish has a suggested level that roughly corresponds to books in this series.Students soon learned that they could request any song they wanted, from a holiday carol, to Mozart, to current pop or rock hits. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1127872). Incidental music composed for piano duet (4-hands) in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This piano duet developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

Starting off slow and daunting at first, with shifts and odd dynamics and rhythms as you just allow yourself to fall into this new feeling. Then, the piece takes off. With confusing chords, a ground bass but always a visible motet. The ground bass always sounds like it may rush, like any second the pianist could speed up and leave the other pianist behind but it never does. The voices often trade parts and dance back and forth. With the treble line taking off suddenly, ending the ground bass line. The last section has question chords, and unresolved lines as a relationship starts to lose the new lover buzz and falls into a steady rhythm. Some may feel that the relationship is ending, that the two pianos don’t sound the same as they used to together. But really the two pianos have found their music. They don’t need to experiment with different rhythms, keys, or time signatures. They know what sounds good together, they can continue to make music forever.

The second section uses 16th notes as the predominant mode of locomotion. The piece finishes up with a swing version that contrasts beautifully with the classical nature of the first two sections and completes this new, bold arrangement. This version is arranged for intermediate piano and can be played on 1 piano, 4 hands. The primo takes the melody, and on the 2nd verse adds a harmony note that may be played with the left hand, or combine with the melody and take it with the right hand. Another option is to play the harmony note with the left hand an octave lower than the right hand melody. The secondo part is a fun vamp that intensifies verse by verse. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece. This arrangement was made for two siblings, 10 and 12 at the time! I would consider them both early intermediate, easily playing at Elementary IV NFMC class. This piece was quite the challenge at first. There are some tricky sections with unison runs. Playing cleanly is important here. Pedal should not be used very much except were notated. A definite crowd pleaser. (If you listen to the video, those are my students performing at an Honors Recital—very proud of them!) Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.
