A Piano Trio, written for the Leeds University Union Music Society Winter Concert Series. Performed by the Hughes Trio featuring Christopher Hughes (Piano), Amy Howe (Violin), and Nikki Kemp (Cello) Programme Notes: This is a rather melodramatic piece that follows the Five Stages of Grief. I first sketched the piece for string quartet after an absolutely horrific interview at the Royal Northern College of Music. Feeling disheartened and dejected, I got home and messily scribbled on some manuscript paper An Elegy for Hopes and Dreams, and started writing this extremely over-dramatic and self-indulgent piece. I had abandoned this piece for an entire year before reviving it and writing the whole piece in just over a week and a half, now reimagined for Piano Trio. The piece starts with an atonal representation of grief before quickly moving into an upbeat Denial section which features a sort of fragile and manic sense of repression as a theme that initially sounds upbeat quickly unravels with whole-tone scales and chromatic movement. A representation of Anger is then seen with the whole trio playing the same melody with a jarring Bb in the harmony. The denial and anger sections repeat and regress before abruptly moving to a Bargaining section in which the original theme, ominously played in the lower piano and cello registers, is juxtaposed with a conjunct, major variation of the same theme in the violin. The Depression section takes the form of a cello solo as I find it to be one of the most emotive and expressive instruments and I take inspiration from Elgar's Cello Concerto, which I angstily listened to on the flight home from my aforementioned interview. A lilting and lamenting cello solo is contrasted with an atonal, aimless piano accompaniment which reflects the topic of depression. The bargaining theme reprises slightly with both strings performing the major variation before leading to the final climax. The Acceptance section sees the principal theme finally fully resolved in a major mode and with diatonic harmony. This is an expressive section as the whole trio plays the same melody with very simple yet emotive harmonic accompaniment underneath. The reality was much more prosaic: what inspired this title was a mere commercial advertisement that pretended to sell me the path to gaining thousands of followers in a few days. This prompted my sceptical response. It is thus demonstrated that everything, even the banal, can be profitable and an inspiration source. This 3:10 piano prelude was composed on 7 May 2021 in Bremen, Germany. A recording of Show Me the Path, by the composer at the piano, was released through the label frtyfve (which licenced it from Janus Music & Sound, the artist's own label). 'Show me the Path' reached 'number one', i.e. It was placed at the top of Apple Music's playlist Piano Chill in the last days of December 2021. La realidad fue mucho más prosaica: lo que inspiró este tÃtulo fue un mero anuncio comercial que pretendÃa venderme el camino hacia obtener miles de seguidores en pocos dÃas. Lo cual motivó mi respuesta escéptica. Quede demostrado asà que de todo, hasta de lo banal, puede obtenerse inspiración. Este preludio para piano, cuya duración es de 3:10, fue compuesto el 7 de mayo de 2021 en Bremen, Alemania. Published by Adrian D Biggs (A0.882264). Agnus dei for high or medium Solo Voice and Organ uses as an inspiration the melody from the aria Ombra mai fú from Handel’s opera Serse. The long, lyrical melody borne forward by the steady, quiet, powerful accompaniment conveys a tranquil sacredness. The sense of entreaty and desire for benediction expressed in the Agnus Dei seems a natural fit with Handel’s famous melody. An instrumental introduction precedes the voice calling out agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi. A solo instrumental meditation follows leading back to the conclusion of the piece. Arrangements for other ensembles are also available (SSA, SAB, SATB) as well as featuring the addition of Solo Violin, Flute, Oboe or Clarinet and soloist with chorus. Difficulty is moderate for both the singer and pianist and is suitable for a sacred setting or the concert hall. Duration approximately 4 minutes. Also available in piano versions

Georg Kröll (born 1934), studied composition with Frank Martin and Bernd Alois Zimmermann, piano with Else Schmitz-Gohr - herself a student of Max Reger -, he also attended courses and lectures by Pousseur, Boulez and Maderna. His ‘Tagebuch’ consists of a series of short piano pieces, their key notes are based on a twelve-note series from Schönberg’s Suite for Piano Op. 25 and are reached via a series of permutations. ‘Just as one can, with a little imagination, see pictures in cloud formations, or discern human or animal shapes in rocks weathered by the wind and the rain, so the sounds inherent in any given material trigger associations. These then crystallise into an inspiration, a structure, a form, or a chord reminiscent of Beet-hoven, a motif by Stravinsky, a clausula by Dufay, a theme by Frescobaldi - the gradual shaping of an idea. The great store of existing material inspires the imagination and a certain joy of discovery, while the external limitations of pre-existing material provide the freedom for internal creative exploration. This is how parodies, homages, paraphrases and quotes are created, shaped from blocks of sound, fragments and aphorisms.’ (Georg Kröll).
