Now I'm introducing Incy Wincy Spider as it might have been played by Beethoven, Mozart, Handel, Burgmuller and Chopin but adding in a bit of jazz. Great for a short concert performance, this piece is both fun and a challenge. The video of the piece also proved a bit of fun, thanks to the spider and a pesky little fly. Hopefully, the composers borrowed from won't think it should be The Wincing Spider Variations .

Unison hands setup up the the spark with bits of  counterpoint and harmony dropping in to push the flame higher until it takes off in a fury of flame. Zooming out to a milder, wider perspective (think distant grass fire) the music next recedes to a comforting (if still hotly busy) fireplace. But before complacency set ins, the real fireworks start with a virtuosic but very playable conclusion ending in a furious burst. Composer’s comments:Fire is part of the Elements Suite and recording created during a visit to the Pacific Northwest, where the natural world exhibits an unusual intensity and the elements are quite prominently display. With this music I hope to capture the contrasts between the four elements as well as the dual natures within each of them.  Water, for example, is both a source of life and potentially dangerous.  Air is both breath and wind.  Fire comforts or burns.  Only Earth seemed to me continuous and dependable.

The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1942 but lost out to “White Christmasâ€. This version was developed from the original 1942 sheet music and features a root-based chord-blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. There, walking the streets, he saw a poster announcing a vocal recital in what he describes as “a very old chapel,†and which was the first public concert he saw since the beginning of the pandemic. “Maybe it was the ambience of the chapel, the city, and the Italian arias that gave me inspiration for the cycle,†he says. And the Poemas de bar became a model for the new music. “Because the Poemas were conversations in a bar, â€De La Chica explains, “I decided to capture everyday conversations in Florence. I ‘stole’ some stories—for example, when I was on line to buy tickets for the Campanile, or in a coffee shop,†he would note bits of conversations he overheard. He tells one story about this: “I still remember around 2 a.m., there was one guy sitting on a bridge over the Arno. I think he was drunk.†De La Chica heard him saying to passersby, “look at the light of the river.†The composer thought the man was trying to jump, an experiencehe describes as “a little scary.†— George Grella.

They can be played on just piano, keyboards, or any combination - in fact, each piece will have a completely different feel and effect depending on what sounds are used. Feel free to experiment! Each part has OHT #4 has a lot of repetition. Figure out all the separate bits in “your†part, learn them, and THEN try to string them together. That will make it much more fun when you put the piece together. The sample mp3 has two versions, one after another.
