This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson and Sara Gazarek improvise on ballads for inspiration.

FINDING MY VOICE is a short intermediate piano work that is simple and symbolic. Inspired by my 4 year old daughter Gracie, the piece represents the music we all have inside us and that we try to connect with early in life. 2 years prior to the start of the piece, I laughed in amusement as my daughter screamed at the top of her enthusiastic lungs to the music of Disney's The Little Mermaid. On the day I began this piece, she sang along to yet another Disney work, Coco, only now with her eyes closed and doing her best at her young age to match pitch and timbre. Of course all of this unaware to her, yet through each phase she enjoys the music and somehow understands and has the will to discover a way to match the art she loves so much. FINDING MY VOICE is simple and symbolic in two special ways. First, the entire song is built with a C, representing that center that we all are trying to find and match in our own way. But for 1/8th of a measure, there is continuously a C sounded throughout the piece. Secondly, the heard melody starts with experimentation, grows, developers, and then reoccurs with strength and confidence.

On the back was the following… Dear Mom, I am writing this to inform you about something I didn’t have the strength to tell you in person. I have depression. I know you think that we all go through a stage where we are sad it’s true, but this is not the case. I thought that I just had a sad time too until I realized I had been thinking about killing myself many times. I know that this is hard to hear but I felt it was important to tell you something I had been holding back for 5 years. I hope you can think of me the same after this note, and know that me thinking about killing myself is NOT your fault. Love, Faith After an immediate trip to the doctor, it was discovered that Faith didn’t have clinical depression but that she suffered from a hormonal imbalance in her body. She had been waking up in the middle of the night over half of her young life and wandering around while the rest of the family slept. With a small prescription, and lots of love, Faith headed off to start middle school and a magical year that would follow. Shortly after this experience, Faith composed a new song called Finding Hope and finished up on three others she had been working on.

This, Piano Waltz in E-flat Major, is only one of several waltzes I have written in the past and intend to write in the future. At their most fundamental level, I see them as a basic to which I can always turn back for peace and familiarity, while also finding myself inspired to experiment with new musical ideas and complexities. In much the same way, Piano Waltz in E-flat Major expresses my love for the art of the waltz by starting simply, then growing to explore bolder sounds and more colorful phrasings, before coming around to resolve with the same simplicity as its origination.

This warm-up is for all singers who need some help with singing one note amidst harmonies or chords. The goal of this warmup is to: 1) Help distinguish different notes in each chord. 2) Learn the Chromatic scale. The warmup goes up by half steps. 3) To increase airflow and control while singing and to exercise the diaphragm. Hints: Sing easy or in falsetto at the start of practicing. Then, as practice gets more involved, sing more strongly with more presence in the chest and head voice.This is perfect for beginning and intermediate singers mostly. Advanced singers could use it for its chromatic nature. Get this if you need help with melody or harmony and finding parts of harmony in music.

This charming little prelude was not actually the first one I wrote for this collection, but rather a replacement for the original which felt out of place with the rest of the pieces. At first glance, it appears to be a study in thirds for the right hand while the left left hand keeps a steady underlying motion, but it is much more than that. There is a feeling of a journey, as though a leaf is floating down a stream. It starts out simple enough, with an air of peace and the image of sunlight on the water. There are moments when the trees block out the sun and the leaf goes in and out of the shimmering reflections, caught in the pull of the current, but nevertheless carried along without any concern as to where it is heading.The music takes on a minor feel as the leaf enters the rapids and is tossed about from whirlpool to whirlpool, nearly being submerged but always finding its way to the surface before finally breaking free and continuing it’s journey with the same sense of tranquility with which it began.

The verses each contain a repeated note in the inner voice of the right hand, sometimes meshing with the melody and sometimes creating dissonance. Those notes represent the inner nudge, quietly wanting to be acknowledged. In the bridge, things seemingly turn upside down, only to return to the exhausted desperation. II. Through the Tempest: There is a fiery nature to this movement; an unapologetic expression of chaos, anger, fear, and heated conversation--between the hands in the music, but maybe between you and…? Creator? Yourself? Life? Lean into the unrelenting nature of this movement and let it cleanse you. III. Finding a New Path: Although somewhat melancholy, the refrain depicts a different state of calm following the storm.
