Program note: Last summer I wrote Préludes … Hommage à C.D. All 12 movements were inspired by Debussy’s Book I of the same title. I enjoyed it so much that I thought I would eventually do Book II as well. As I got around to it I discovered that Book II did not resonate with me as did Book I. So, I went looking at the many, many other solo piano works by C.D. and I came across his Six Épigraphes Antique which engaged me tremendously. As I did with Book I, I took initial elements of Debussy’s music and then took off in my own direction from the original. The original six épigraphes has a duration of 15.5 minutes. That is too short for me. So I added two more pieces from Debussy’s works: Poisson d’or and the famous Réverie. It is now ca. 26 minutes in duration. I. Pour Pan, dieu du vent d’été … Moderato II. Pour un tombeau sans nom … Adagio III. Pour que la nuit soit propice … Allegro IV. Pour la danseuse aux crotales … Adagio V. Poisson d’or … Moderato VI. Pour Cléopâtre, l’Égyptienne … Largo VII. Pour remercier la pluie du matin … Presto, TRIO VIII. Réverie … Adagio Enjoy!!!

Twenty-six Preludeswas composed for Holly Roadfeldt between September 2013 and April 2014. Unlike the famous preludes by composers like Bach, Chopin, and Debussy, mine are not organized by key. Instead, they are organized by threads: compositional ideas that are developed over the course of the entire set. Composing the set in this manner allowed me to develop several ideas concurrently with the idea that they would in some way merge together by the end of the set, giving the several disparate ideas a real reason to exist together in the same set. In addition, because I was not using key as a resource, I was not constrained by the number 24. The end result is a cycle of preludes that is in some ways more closely related to a Schubertian song cycle than to the Preludes of Chopin, Bach, or Debussy. That is not to say that there is not a close conceptual connection with the Preludes of those masters (there are subtle references to each of those composers in the score), but my intention was to treat the Preludes in a cyclical fashion rather than, as is the case with Bach and Chopin, an exploration of the nuances of the 24 keys. The preludes were not composed in the order that they are presented. Some of them came in quick bunches: two or three in a day; others took longer. In addition to developing the compositional threads, I was interested in creating a wide range of moods that also held together as a set. Overall, the moods become more intense as the set unfolds.The premiere performance was given by Holly Roadfeldt on November 18, 2014 at the University at Albany. The Raising of Lazarus, for Piano composed in 1987The InspirationThe music is an impressionistic work based on the biblical miracle. For me a miracle that stands alone portraying the all encompassing power of Jesus while demonstrating his unequivocal compassion. The MusicComposed in 1987 which beyond its inspiration from the miracle was clearly influenced by Debussy and Ravel. The opening bars depict Lazarus lost in some unknown realm; confused and alone. At measure 22 Jesus has arrived and will do what no one else can; bring life from death. At measure 49 Lazarus emerges from the tomb and Jesus moves on; ever closer to his own death and resurrection.The recording is a midi recording using the sibelius notation software. After using Encore for 30 years I decided to move onto new scoring software. I found it quite workable.Composed by Kevin Longley (1958-).

Toccata Number 1 was composed in 1988. Heavily influenced by Ravel, Debussy and Block it is one of my favorite compositions for Piano. The performance is from 1988 at Notre Dame College. My playing is a bit rushed but gives an overall impression of the piece. Note that at page 9 there are alternate measures that can be found at the end. In my performance I played the alternate measures.

The Inspiration The music is an impressionistic work based on a landscape painting by Joanne Springfield Longley. The painting, which is the first page of this piece, depicts the field where she grew up as a young woman and which is now the location of our home. A beautiful piece of art capturing the forest as the sun set in East Derry, NH. The Music Composed in 1985 which beyond its inspiration from the painting was clearly influenced by Debussy's La cathédrale engloutie. The recording is from 1987 with the composer performing at a small college in New Hampshire.

Composed between January and March 2003, the Suite for Piano was written for a recital by pianist Qi Liu (1976-2017), at Stony Brook University, in March of 2003.The opening of the first movement evokes bells, not unlike those in Rachmaninoff’s RusÂsian Easter (the finale of his First Suite for Two Pianos). This is contrasted with a short and murky rising gesture. The middle section incorporates pianistic patterns (some reminiscent of Debussy), a yearning IbeÂrian melody, and a barely-recognizÂable snippet of Chopin used for a climax. The murky gesture eventually returns, introducing a triumphant stateÂment of the opening bells.Early on, I had decided the piece should include references to the other pieces on the reÂcital’s program: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 18 (op. 31, No. 3) and Brahms’s F minor SoÂnata (op. 5). As soon as I had word from Qi that she was going to play the Beethoven, I immediÂately wanted to hear it. I wasn’t familiar with the piece, and since I didn’t have a score or a reÂcording of it at home, I decided to download it in MIDI format from the internet. Unbeknownst to me, the computer’s rendition transformed the lively secÂond movement scherzo into a slow-moving hymn which reminded me of the Ode to Joy. I was quite surÂprised the next mornÂing when I went to the muÂsic library and listened to a reÂcording played by a human. Nonetheless, I was drawn to the melody, and I found the slow effect interesting, so I deÂcided to base my middle movement (the slow movement) around the theme of BeethoÂven’s scherzo, making it the hidÂden theme for a short set of variations. The end of the movement also contains less direct referÂences to the music of Brahms (very short alluÂsions to the Sonata and to the Variations on a Theme by Haydn).The last movement explores fast and light fingerwork, in a sort of toccata or capriccio, proÂviding a flashy ending to the piece. As in the first movement, the form is A-B-A. Before the return of the first section, a little dance evokes the opening of the piece. (The murky gesture from the first movement also finds its way into this last movement).Each of the three movements experiments at one point with using the sustain pedal in order to create a wash of sound. Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1073968). The most Impressionistic of Opus 3, the cathedral in this instance is the forest rather than the sunken one from Debussy’s prelude. The canopy of the trees is the vaulted ceiling and the trunks serve as the columns. As one walks down the colonnade, the spaces between the trees serve as windows onto the magnificence of nature. From a musical standpoint, the thick, rich chords of the right hand create a feeling of majesty and awe broken by the melismatic figures of the wind through the boughs. Once again, it is of great importance to balance the chords to bring forth the melody.
