However, my sincere hope is that since I have rendered some of Beethoven’s music as duets, his music is now more readily available to all permitting a greater number of musicians and all the people who hear their performances to come to know and love a bit of the world’s most valuable, breathtaking and beautiful music. In truth, Beethoven’s music has stood the test of time. He astonished people in his day whenever he performed his music or had his music played. He still does today. To be sure, his music has enhanced and enriched the lives of many of us for over 200 years. These duets are unique. They can be performed as a duet for Violin I and Violin II and as a Violin ensemble in groups of 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. Each Scherzo is published for many other orchestral instruments. They are published individually for each instrument; in a Three Volume Collection with 3 Scherzi in each volume; and in a Complete Collection containing all three volumes. Volume One has Scherzo No.1, Scherzo No. 2 and Scherzo No.3. Volume Two has Scherzo No.4, Scherzo No 5 and Scherzo No.6. Volume Three has Scherzo No.7, Scherzo No.8 and Scherzo No.9. Joe Procopio AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BEETHOVEN DUETS By Joe Procopio Because of the complexities, range and sonorities inherent in all of the Beethoven Symphonies, it may seem impossible to transcribe any one movement as a duet that is true to the composer. Nevertheless, I believe these duets contain the heart, soul and essence of Beethoven’s melodies, rhythms and expressions; even though these works are tiny when they are compared to the Master’s great musical creations which have no equal. In fact, there is no comparison. However, my sincere hope is that since I have rendered some of Beethoven’s music as duets, his music is now more readily available to all permitting a greater number of musicians and all the people who hear their performances to come to know and love a bit of the world’s most valuable, breathtaking and beautiful music. In truth, Beethoven’s music has stood the test of time. He astonished people in his day whenever he performed his music or had his music played. He still does today. To be sure, his music has enhanced and enriched the lives of many of us for over 200 years. In performing and listening to these Scherzi you will find the whole of each work a marvel of Beethoven’s skill with sections reaching the sublime. Few composers have been able to write down on paper music of such incredible beauty that it reflects the awesome splendor of God’s creation. What comes to mind immediately is Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony No. 6. It has been said, that much of his music mirrors not only the magnificence of God’s creation but also the radiance of God the Creator himself. In any event, this music is simply amazing and awe-inspiring. A joy to listen to and to play. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q778629). The 9th String Quartet forms the penultimate work in my Beethoven Study quartet cycle. Chronologically, however, it was composed after the 10th Quartet Cavatina. And indeed, when composing it, it felt like the conclusion of the cycle. While the 6th Quartet Studie über Beethoven, which opened the cycle, was still in one movement, the 7th in two and the 8th in three, this 9th Quartet is a four-movement work. The sacred musical number 9 inspired me to create an especially substantial and intense composition. The second movement, a Scherzo, and the fourth movement Allegro alla marcia have become simply gigantic in their dimensions and in the density of information and impulses in comparison to their historical models. This 9th quartet has a particular focus on Beethoven’s still unattainable Quartet in C# minor op. 131. The radical nature and modernity of this work are still burning issues for us today. As in the other quartets in the cycle, I have been amazed at the new forms which have evolved during my preoccupation with their historical models and the extent of previously unknown spiritual depths in my own music during the process of composition. While my study of Beethoven's symphonies in the orchestral piece Con brio led to the discovery of new tonal possibilities for the orchestra (the timpani treatment!) and the juxtaposition of Beethoven's choral fantasy with the Latin Dies irae in my ARCHE oratorio made it possible to develop new theological and thematic points of focus, in the string quartet cycle it is above all the development and discovery of new forms that could only emerge through the study of Beethoven's quartets. Johannes Brahms is best known for his symphonies, concerti and large scale chamber works, but his catalog of over 200 Lieder shows he was also a master of small forms and intimate expression. Wiegenlied (Lullaby), included in this set of arrangements for string quartet, is one of the best known and most loved melodies ever written. His original gently syncopated accompaniment, reproduced here, makes an elegant backdrop for it. The set opens with Sapphische Ode (Sapphic Ode), whose title is not directly connected to the ancient Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos, but refers to the verse form of the poem Brahms set, that bears her name. The melody resembles the theme of the slow movement from Brahms’s violin concerto, written a few years earlier. Following it is Wenn du nur zuweilen lächelst (If you only sometimes smile), a fine example of the mood of longing and melancholy that Brahms often depicted in both songs and instrumental music. The music moves back and forth between major and minor, and the flowing 9/8 meter occasionally varies the 3+3+3 pulse to 2+2+2+3 in a natural-seeming way.Brahms never wrote an opera, but Von ewiger Liebe (Of Eternal Love), which builds from a somber opening, through a stormy middle section to a powerful climax, gives us a sense of what a Brahms operatic scene, in this case a love duet, might have sounded like. Alternative Title: Concerto à Quattro, in forma di Pastorale per il Santo NataleOften known as his Christmas ConcertoArranged standard string quartet.Giuseppe Torelli (1658–1709) wrote numerous and often imposing symphonies for use in the San Petronio Cathedral in Bologne well before the turn of the century.Furthermore, he was the first composer to write a concerto for solo violin and string orchestra (published at Augsburg, 1698), and his Concerti Grossi Op 8, which appeared in print shortly after his death, are the very first concertos for two solo violins. It is the sixth of these that contains the Christmas music. A solemn ‘Grave’ sets the scene for the Pastorale, marked ‘Vivace’ and cast in 12/8 metre, the two solo violins carrying much of the melodic interest. A meditative Largo leads to another ‘Vivace’ which is a Gavotte en Musette in all but name, its held bass notes strongly suggesting the drone of the shepherds’ pipes.This is my arrangement of the 3rd movement.
