Written originally for the mandolin, it surely is one of O’Connor’s most memorable mandolin melodies. With the aid of Edgar Meyer arranging the fabulous cello and bass solo sections, the piece can be performed in a variety of instrumental settings. The mandolin part could be also covered by guitar, piano, harp or most any chordal instrument. The piece was named by a young music student at an inner-city camp for underprivileged youths. At his workshop, O’Connor performed his new piece on the mandolin and asked for the kids to help him name it. The title, Butterfly’s Day Out, helped O’Connor complete his vision for the tune. The whole experience also inspired the idea for O’Connor to start his own Fiddle Camps. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels. Turlough O?Carolan is one of Ireland?s most celebrated baroque composers, responsible for some of the strongest and grandest melodies to come out of his homeland. He was a great friend of his Italian contemporary Corelli, who spent some time in Dublin and had a significant influence on O?Carolan?s music. But traditional music was an influence too, and, stylistically, his compositions occupy a fascinating middle ground between these two genres.

The audio sample here, part of Princess Royal, is of an impromptu 'read off' by seven string players, so most lines have two instruments. It's only an extract, but gives a flavour of the music.

The Dutch Composer, Johan B Kok (1889-1954), wrote over two- hundred compositions for different combinations of instruments, all of which included the Mandolin or the Mandolin Orchestra. ‘Joska’, originally written for two Mandolins, Mandola and Guitar, bears the subtitle and style of the ‘Zigeuner Romance’ or ‘Gypsy Romance’, and it may well have been inspired by Monti’s better known ‘Czardas’, which, significantly, was also originally written for Mandolin and Piano. Both pieces have contrasting slow and fast sections, which is typical of Central European ‘tavern music’, commonly associated with Hungary. ‘Czardas’, of course, means ‘tavern’ in Hungarian.

Chi passa per ’sta stradaThe sixteenth-century Italian composer, Filippo Azzaiolo (1530-1569), published three books of villotas (secular songs). In the first of these, Primo libro de villotte alla padoana a quattro voci, the first song (also the most popular) was Chi passa per ’sta strada (He who passes down this street). An exquisite chord sequence provide the basis for a simple melody, together with a set of variations I composed.The left-hand part (quite odd really, as I don’t play any keyboard instrument, but I’m sure you know what I mean!) shows the chords as I would play them on an octave mandola or a bouzouki (both tuned GDAE, one octave below mandolin or violin), and the chord diagrams show my fingerings for these. Other accompanists can simply use the chords’ letter names, also included, and work out their own fingerings/voicings. However, I strongly recommend keeping accompaniment simple and percussive, accentuating the rhythm, allowing the mandolin or other lead instrument space in which to play those variations.

Published by Simon Browne (A0.975482). Mango Vert is a calypso-based paseo (two-step dance) recorded by Lovey's Original Trinidad String Band in 1912. This was the first recording of calypso music, pre-dating the first jazz record by five years. Originally performed on violins, clarinet, flute, cello and a number of strumming instruments (guitar, mandolin, Venezuelan cuatro and Portuguese braga). This arrangement distills the lively, improvised nature into an arrangement for intermediate violin with chords and suggested strumming patterns (for guitar, ukelele, mandolin or any other plucked instruments). Part of Paseos and Waltzes of Trinidad Vol.1. which can be purchased for $29.99 as complete set of 12 paseos and waltzes, as recorded by Lovey's Band and Lionel Belasco's Orchestra 1912-1918.Arrangements for larger ensembles (strings and woodwind), are also available.
