Throughout the centuries, sundials (a flat plate that marks the time of the day by the shadow of a gnomon which is cast onto it) have been used by civilizations to tell time. Unlike modern clocks and digital watches, in which every single second has its own momentary significance, telling time by sundial is more evolutionary. The seconds, and hours, melt into one another. It is perhaps for this reason that sundials have often been conceived not only as practical time pieces, but as works of art, metaphors, and creations that are inherent expressions of the personality of their creators. Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

We start with the Lannisters theme (the Rains of Castamere) on cello, later accompanied by viola. A general crescendo leaves us with the main theme, transcribed as best as possible from Ramin Djawadi's masterful header. The violin can do pizz on the last phrase, or not play it at all. Arrangement on a single page to facilitate its interpretation outdoors. Bowings and dynamics to facilitate a good sightreading. All set to recreate the Red Wedding in your performances! Musically, the melody gets handed to all 4 strings, though the violin 1 inevitably has the melody most of the time. Arranged with hauntingly beautiful harmonies hailing from the 20th century, post-romantic era. 2 options exist in the arrangement. While most of the piece is moderately advanced, the final 2 pages hold the bulk of the difficulty. Play either the 2 verse version (easier/shorter) or the full 3 verse version (fuller/longer/features a key change). Piano solo also available (SMD). You have an intro with chim-chim-cheree, followed by feed the birds, but they don't fully develop. After that, A Spoon of Sugar, with the birds part made by the first violin and the second and viola enkoying. The next part is, now complete, Chim-Chim-Cheree, with the melody starting in the cello, and then passing by the rest of instruments from lower to higher. When the second plays the melody, the first plays a counter-theme a little bit tricky. And, in the end, now complete, Feed the Birds, with constant dialogs between the violins. La siguiente parte es, ya completa, Chim-Chim-Cheree, con la melodÃa comenzando en el violoncello, y luego pasando por el resto de instrumentos de más grave a más agudo. Cuando el segundo toca la melodÃa, el primero tiene un contratema un poco complicado.
