This is a collection of 12 Trios (or Duets) arranged for Violin, Viola and Cello, based on melodies of beloved traditional christian hymns. Melodies are harmonized mostly by interweaving counter melodies. The Violin and Viola (or Violin II) are, at times, alternating melody and counter melodies, rather than the traditional vocal parts found in church hymnals. The result is a more interweaving flow of melody and counter melody. The Cello provides the bass, as it also contributes to the counter melodious sound. A Violin II part has been added to duplicate the Viola, in case a Viola is not available. These pieces also work very nicely as duets without the Cello; or duets with the Violin and Cello. Designed for early intermediate musicians, the collection is ideal for prelude or postlude music and especially offertories in worship services, funerals, weddings, etc . Length of the pieces can be altered by using more or less of the repeats included. The last two pieces are based on melodies from Christmas hymns. In addition, these pieces have a technical training value, as would etudes and exercises, due to the moving counter melodies that may challenge students at the early intermediate level. Though written to challenge students at the early intermediate level, more advanced musicians and audiences will find this music quite satisfying to play and enjoy, respectively. String class teachers may consider using this collection in class, as the entire Violin, Viola or Cello sections will be in unison, as a section, which provides support to players within their section. At same time, the other sections would be playing other parts, also in unison as a section - a good ensemble practice tool. The class might perform pieces from this collection in concert. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.575837). Originally written for a Delian suite for various composers remembering Schoenberg back in 2006, I have now revised it and provided separate parts. The piece is atonal and satirically based on Twinkle twinkle little star by way of a supposed reaction from Pluto after it was relegated from planet to dwarf planet by astronomers here on earth. I wrote the following introduction for the Delian suite version: 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' (Jane Taylor's poem used for the tune to the French song Ah, vous dirai-je maman) is given an atonal treatment, for string quartet, in memory of the 'lost' planet of Pluto. Of course Pluto is still there, merely changed in the human taxonomy, which deems it to be no longer a planet. Similarly Twinkle, Twinkle is no longer a nursery rhyme but a strange atonal piece with memories of its past self moving towards an unknown space. It will be curious to know at which age a child recognises the twinkle-twinkle motif in this new, totally untraditional version. However, atonal though it is, it still appears to have some kind of 'home.' 'Ah, vous dirai-je maman, ce qui cause mon tourment,' ce n'est plus la petite chanson d'enfants, elle s'en va vers les étoiles dans un astronef de quatuor à cordes atonal. Son tourment?: Sa lamentation ne vise que la taxonomie humaine des planètes-Pluton, tu n'est plus planète? Maman! où se trouve la réalité, où se trouve notre domicile? Nous avons tous nos taxonomies, mais la réalité est en dehors... Le sens de tonalité est en dehors... Mais malgré tout, on reconnaît la mélodie... N'est-ce pas?.

Look no further than the Snowdrift Galop written by British composer, Charles Coote Jnr. It starts off just like Jingle Bells - and the Jingle Bells theme keeps coming back, but is it actually Jingle Bells? It also has a march-like theme and a lovely Trio section. All players get to play important melodic material in this arrangement.Snowdrift Galop was published in London in 1868 in a small collection of works by various composers. The opening theme is immediately recognisable as the popular holiday favourite, Jingle Bells, which was published 11 years earlier, yet the composer gives no reference or credit to the earlier work. Although the opening theme is the same as Jingle Bells, we get a stately march instead of the familiar Jingle Bells chorus. A lovely Trio introduces another new tune which is played by clarinet 3, then bass clarinet before returning to the opening section.Charles Coote Jnr (1831-1916) was a prolific English composer of popular music, including quadrilles, waltzes and galops. His music was written for society balls and subsequently published for piano, so that others could play them at local dances or in their ownhomes. He was the son of composer and bandmaster, Charles Coote (1809-1880). Coote Snr worked for the 6th Duke of Devonshire for 30 years, conducted his private orchestra, and was referred to by the Duke as his personal pianist. Growing up in this environment would have ensured that Coote Jnr was well connected with British society.Duration - 4 minutes.

As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. More than 130 musicians, including 28 composers, participated of QUINZE (CDs and series).His discography includes 14 CDs as producer, 14 as composer, 22 as general producer, 2 as arranger and 2 as pianist. His catalog of compositions includes approximately 115 works for various ensembles, including Symphony Orchestra. Sacrum Creaturae (2019) (score and parts) for string quartet and digital acoustic commissioned and premiered August 18th, 2021 at the Stringwood Chamber Music Festival by the Artaria String Quartet, profiles three endangered creatures: wolves, dolphins, and birds in the three movements of this string quartet. Each of the digital acoustics, the recorded and processed sounds of wolves, dolphins, and birds, explore the sounds of these creatures from three perspectives. Canis Lupus-Nocturne developed through the exploration of wolf howls, growls, snarls, barks, and choruses. My goal in integrating the sounds of wolves with the string quartet was to make them equally passionate and expressive driving the dynamic and emotional climaxes of the music with equal intensity. Programatically, I have placed the wolves deep in the forest, in an environment that allows the string quartet to evoke the mystery and primal energy associated with these animals. I make musical references to the controversy of re-introducing these animals in the wild and the history of violent annihilation by hunters. Delphinus-Cradlesong comprises the slow, middle movement of this piece. The cradlesong is literal and is inspired by the recent discovery by marine scientists that a mother dolphin will sing to its unborn calf so that it bonds with the mother and is familiar with her voice after birth. I have essentially orchestrated my Cradlesong for solo piano for string quartet and the whistling sounds of a mother dolphin singing to its calf. The final movement, 21 Birds, incorporates the bird calls of 21 birds in the Driftless region of the upper Mississippi, integrated with the thematic music of the string quartet. I treat the birds as 21 soloists and as an orchestra of birds accompanying the quartet. In the performance with the quartet, I have employed various special effects, such as reverberation, echo, and delay to blend the two acoustics. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645).
