Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767558). An original horn quartet inspired by a conversation about writing for horns. There are three movements. After some time, I decided to see if this would work well on woodwinds and lo and behold, it sits really nicely on bassoon.The first movement is called Canon. It consists of a simple theme that is presented in imitation by each of the four 'voices' first at 2 bar intervals then, in inversion at four bar intervals and then in the original form at one bar intervals. There is a linking fanfare-like passage before the final statement of the original motif with fanfare-like adaptations.The second movement is called Lullaby. The elegant, drifting melody is passed around the four players with a largely chordal accompaniment pattern that needs to be played sotto voce at all times. The tempo is marked Largo, but it is still one-in-a-bar.The third movement is called Hullabaloo-haloo-haloo. While it is based on a 6/8 cantering rhythm, there is a lot of variation in both the accompaniment and the melody. Again, all the lines have a lot of interest, nobody has to play simple um-chucks, and there's even a solo for the Contra at the end.This is a really enjoyable and exciting new addition to the Bassoon quartet repertoire.

Published by Amanda Jaye Steinhoff (A0.1449305). This traditional folksong, which dates back to the early 19th century, has been given some new life with this arrangement for bassoon quartet. The floating melody, primarily in the 1st bassoon part, is passed around to other players, while the 4th bassoon lays the strong foundation, much like the strong a steady current of the Missouri River. The dynamics in this arrangement urge the performers to swell in and out and they play, reflective of the ripples in the water as canoes and boats float by. Be sure not to rush this piece, and refer to some of the traditional lyrics:Oh Shenandoah,I long to hear you,Away, you rolling river.'Tis seven years since last I've seen you,Away, you rolling river.There is a sense of longing in the various lyrics of the original folk song, whether because of missing home, missing a loved one, or the pains of forbidden love. Performers are urged to play with the same delicacy of those intimate emotions and gentle waters of the large river. The ending should be reflective of echoes in the open air on the river as one floats across the wide Missouri.

Claude Debussy’s two sets of Préludes for piano have always been among my favorites and I have selected these three from Livre 1 because they work well on low instruments. The first and third preludes can be played on four bassoons, but the second requires the fourth player to switch to contrabassoon, although an alternative bassoon part is included. If you are unfamiliar with the Préludes, I suggest you listen to some recordings first to get an idea of what these pieces are all about. You can then perhaps introduce your own ideas. Debussy specified the very slow tempo for Footprints…, but the other tempos are just my suggestions. Likewise, the translations of the less familiar French terms are mine, and you may wish to rethink them.

Then I wrote a bassoon duo for her and her teacher. Then Becky told me she has a friend who plays the violin. So I wrote her a duo for violin and bassoon. The next year her brother took up the double bass, so I wrote a duo for bassoon and double bass and called it A Canon for the Under Belly. Last year she told me she formed a wind trio with flute, clarinet and bassoon. So I did that for her. This year I decided that I would write something a bit more serious for her, a bassoon quartet. It is in six short movements and the last one is a fugue!!!

HornMozart is considered one of the greatest melody-writers in musical history, and this Menuetto from his 40th Symphony is a great example of this.The movement explores an angry and robust G minor theme. Although it is titled as a Minuet, the use of hemiola and three bar phrases would have made the movement quite difficult to dance to, something which certainly would have amused playful Mozart! We then have the contrast in the trio section with a softer, sweeter G major theme before returning to our Minuet once more.Mozart has always been a favourite composer of mine and the rambunctious nature of the piece works fantastically well for bassoon quartet! Offbeat in Two is a vibrant piece that is all about the rhythmic drive! The downbeat is always a rest as are most of the cardinal beats. The notes are easy; the difficulty level depends on how well you feel offbeat rhythms. I have marked it as Intermediate not only because of rhythms, but also because it is all tongued and up tempo. For some instruments, Parts 1 & 4 might push the upper and lower range limits. Form is AA, bridge, BB, D.C., Coda with the A theme in a contrasting key. Individually the parts are not difficult, but it is the dynamic way they pulse together and interact that creates interest and excitement. It is a wild ride for one and a half minutes! With the right drive and energy this can be a real showpiece!5 pages score and parts; recording is a piano reduction of parts.This version is for Bassoon Quartet. Go for it!
