This is a book of popular pieces arranged for duet; it comprises both volumes from the '15 Duets for Fun' series, plus the '21 Christmas Duets for Fun' as well, making a total of 51 duets in this set. The difficulty levels range from early-intermediate to advanced, and should provide something for everyone to enjoy. Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

The Wild Horseman (literally ‘the wild rider’) features in a collection of 43 short piano pieces ‘für die Jugend’, written in 1848. At the time, Schumann had three daughters under eight years old, who perhaps inspired him to compose with young beginners in mind. Although the first part of the collection is suited to novice pianists, the later items (pieces 19 – 43) are more challenging and are labelled ‘für Erwachsenere’ – ‘for the more grown-up’. The Wild Horseman is number 8 in the collection, making it one of the ‘child-friendly’ pieces. In arranging it for the clarinet and bassoon combination, some extra difficulty, in the form of running accompaniment passages, has been added. This explains its classification as 'intermediate'.

The technical level is about Grade 3 (UK ABRSM) The range covers low F (only twice, and well prepared) to the F above the staff. The bassoon part makes considerable use of quarter note triplets and tied notes. The piece has long lyrical phrases, beginning in A minor/C major and ending in F major. It is ideal for developing a sustained tone. The piece is rewarding to perform and the piano part has been kept fairly straightforward throughout. It would make an excellent piece for a student recital.

It has always been a favorite among instrumental players and often used in recitals or concert encores. This arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for the intermediate bassoon player. It is in concert C and range is from G on the lowest line of the bass clef to the E just above the staff. In 1853, the well-known French composer Charles Gounod added his own melody over a rippling keyboard accompaniment which was a slightly adapted version of the Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, published in 1722. The title of the “combined†piece was Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach. Gounod’s original arrangement transposed Bach’s keyboard part from C major into F major and it was scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French music publishing company Jacques-Léopold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the familiar Latin text. Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a traditional Catholic prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary.The version of Bach's prelude which Gounod used included the so-called Schwencke measure (m. 27 in this arrangement), a measure (bar) allegedly added by the German composer and pianist Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke (1767-1822) in an attempt to correct what was considered a harmonic weakness in the original. Whether there actually was a “harmonic weakness†(or possibly an error in the manuscript) remains a matter of conjecture but the fact remains that the most familiar-sounding version of this piece, recorded countless times by both singers and instrumentalists includes this Schwencke measure. It is therefore included in this arrangement.Some published arrangements show minor inconsistencies in the rhythm of the melody. This arrangement uses the familiar rhythm of the Ave Maria version as it appeared in the 1859 edition.

It was first published in 1899, although Joplin had been performing it for some years prior to this. The composer was confident that the work would be a commercial success and, indeed, in due course, royalties from the piece provided him with a stable income for life. Joplin wanted The Maple Leaf Rag performed at his funeral. His widow opted not to honour this request, feeling that the music was stylistically inappropriate for such a sad occasion – a decision she later regretted.This arrangement for mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet or bassoon is pretty challenging, both in terms of technique and stamina, hence its classification as 'advanced intermediate'. If desired, players could opt to finish at the change of key at letter F, rather than performing the complete piece.
