Variations on an Irish Theme (Be Thou My Vision) was recorded as part of Keith’s album of 20 original guitar solos entitled Wintersong released in 2002. The opening theme is followed by three variations and includes detailed fingerings in standard notation with TAB for ease of learning. This ancient Irish melody can serve as a beautiful interlude during church services, gigs or wedding ceremonies. Here’s what one listener wrote of Wintersong:As a classical guitarist, I'm always on the lookout for new compositions. The melody was actually written by the Spanish musician Sebastián Iradier. Bizet mistakenly believed it to be a folk melody but was quick to credit the original author upon being informed of its origin.  Iradier had a gift for creating popular melodies as he also wrote the beautiful La Paloma. This arrangement employs a variety of timbres and the full range of the instruments. Guitars 3 & 4 are tuned to D and Guitar 1 has the option of playing up to a high A (fret 17), although this passage is equally effective played an octave lower (see note in score). I have provided a score with notes and TAB, a score with notes only (to facilitate directors' page turns) and all parts with notes and TAB or just notes. Released in the summer of 2016, Keith Gehle’s 5th full length commercial recording (Space and Time) is a sincere, heartfelt journey of healing through instrumental sounds and compositions. The album features 11 tracks of steel and nylon string guitars with accompanying piano, cello, flute, oboe, strings and synth pad sounds. Keith wrote the music and produced the recordings over several years after the unexpected death of his brother Ken in January of 2010. The process of grieving an unimaginable loss coupled with writing and recording music as a tribute to his late brother was extremely difficult and at times painful. The resulting work is honest, pure, and for Keith, a healing endeavor. JOHN DUNBAR'S THEME (Dances With Wolves) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLEPrimarily for Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This theme, from the film 'Dances With Wolves' is widely admired as a charming and powerful melody.It will make a wonderful item for a concert.My arrangement is based on track 4 of the official Soundtrack CD. It’s very slow, and lasts just over three and a half minutes - be sure not to rush this lovely piece and its haunting descant in the final Verse.The key is just a semitone lower than the original, and two guitars are tuned to 6=D to give a rich deep bass that maximises the sustain that guitars can achieve.Guitar 1 plays the part of the high descant in the original.Guitar 2 is the tune, and if you have more than 4 players, there is an optional divisi part (Guitar 2a) that helps reinforce the beautiful melody.Guitar 3 is arpeggio based, to help the sustain and to ease the counting of the beats.Guitar 4 has thick chords which should be rolled (but not strummed) to add to the majesty of the music.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts.
