Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.596599). Mercy is an obsessively expressive Adagio (so to say, an answer to Samuel Barber's Adagio) with a homophonic texture, like a four part chorale. Rhythmically, this piece offers no problems. While the part of the first violin requires more experienced players, all others are relatively easy to play. Most groups would be able to master this piece after only a couple of rehearsals. Some would say that mercy is a virtue, others that it is a weakness. Do not seek in this piece a one-to-one musical transcription of merciful feelings, but rather concentrate on the smoothness and tender sound quality associated with it. Rather than pity, mercy is about empathy, togetherness and support - this attitude can also show while performing music. Approximate duration: 3 minutes 15 seconds. Mercy was composed in 2013 and is dedicated to the flutist Cecilia Piehl Pierce.

Around the year 1726, John Walsh, a London music publisher, created a wonderful forgery in order to run around the copyright laws of the day: he pretended to pirate an edition supposedly published by the House of Roger in Amsterdam. This forgery included 12 Sonatas for solo instrument and continuo which had been composed by one George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Around 1793 the House of Arnold published the same set, omitting two of the original 12 and replacing them with two others by Handel. So at this point there were a total of 14 solo sonatas available to the public.In the year 1879 Friedrich Chrysander issued these 14 works and several others in volume 27 of the German Handel Society’s Gesamtausgabe of Handel’s works. Since then they have been edited from this scholarly work many times, and afflicted by all sorts of permutations which reflect the various styles of performance in vogue over the years. One finds editions stripped of ornamentation but loaded with articulation and dynamic markings at one end of the spectrum, and editions with modest stenographic and florid ornamentation at the other. The Sonata in C Minor (London: 1712) is a pure example of the middle phase of the solo sonata da chiesa [church sonata]. The first three movements are indicative of the style found in sonatas derived from the disruptive canzona of the early 17th century. An initial slow movement with walking bass is followed by an imitative movement (in this case, a fugue with a chromatic subject), which in turn leads to an Adagio. This latter movement in the relative major is a ricercare containing several imitative entrances. The finale is a spirited binary-form Bourrée angloise, an item taken over from the French ordre or dance suite. The extraordinarily short length of this movement seems to indicate that a trio is missing here; therefore, I have added the bourrée from the Royal Fireworks Music of 1749 to act as a trio, but players are certainly free to omit it. Published by Paul Sweet Music (A0.940136). Machinations, a 4 minute concert piece perfect for advanced high school or college level players, opens in a sort of rhythmic and tonal gridlock. Short sequences of notes in each part overlap and struggle to break free from the others, sometimes shifting slightly upward or downward. Slowly, new harmonies and dissonances are created by these shifts, taking the music to a breaking point where a new theme finally pushes through. A more outgoing middle section surges ahead relentlessly, each of the parts working now more as a group than before. Eventually, though, it becomes clear that the gridlock of the beginning must return. The third and final section seems at first to be a repeat of the opening material, but the appearance of music from the middle section lets the listener know this is not the case. Themes from all over the work soon blend and overlap, growing in intensity until the climax implodes and the work comes to a quiet and uneasy end. Machinations, by definition, are plots or schemes. I imagined, as I wrote the work, that each instrumental part was scheming about how it would break free from the rigid and meticulous pattern of the opening measures. By the same token, it was clear that some undefined force was plotting ways to keep the music in this form. Imagine these secret plots and maneuvers as you play or conduct the work for maximum effectiveness.

It is written on a medium easy level for beginning string players in 3 part harmony with viola doubling 2nd violin and cello doubling string bass. Written in 2024, Romance for String Orchestra is unabashedly tonal piece based on music from my compositions Romance for Orchestra (1982) and Pasacalle Triste (2024). Romance for Orchestra was composed as my undergraduate thesis at The Boston Conservatory of Music and has since writhed in obscurity. One understands why, though: various passages sound like juvenilia. Still, others sound a good deal stronger, and it is those passages that I have rescued, and which are featured in Romance for String Orchestra. Newly composed passages bracket and are intertwined with older ones, many of which are here transposed. Though just a smattering when compared to the number of passages borrowed from Romance for Orchestra, the ones borrowed from Pasacalle Triste nonetheless provide a meaningful creative arc manifested in one composition, and they provide just the right touches during various sequential passages. Speaking of sequences, Romance for Orchestra contains what is for my oeuvre the most expansive sequence I have composed to date; in both cases that sequence leads to the formal recapitulation of the main theme in the tonic key C Minor.
