Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939404). Mozart set Christian Adolph Overbeck’s text to Komm, lieber Mai in January 1791 shortly before what would be his last birthday. Overbeck, a poet and lawyer and later Mayor of Lübeck, wrote a set of poems in 1776 under the title Fritzchen an den Mai (Fritz on the May). This song is highly regarded among the German art songs of the era. Mozart coupled it with two other songs under the title Sehnsucht nach dem Fruhlinge (Longing for Spring). Seemingly taken by his theme, Mozart uses it again in the finale of his last piano concerto, Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat Major, K. 595. Mozart’s three songs were published in a collection of children’s song by Ignaz Alberti. While the voice is supposed to be that of a child, it is really an adult’s longing for the flowering of Spring and the promise of new birth and, perhaps, new love.This set of variations were written as a recital work with a young violist (playable in first position) in mind. They are abouyt five minutes in length.

A passacaglia is ... a musical form that is usually of a serious character and is often, but not always, based on a bass-ostinato and written in triple meter. from Wikipedia. THIS PASSACAGLIA is a slow theme and variations, in a minor mode, with a bass ostinato. THE ONLY difficult part is dealing with the counterpoint, but it is worth the effort, it will impress your audience, and is fun to play. I HAVE 3 versions; this one is for piano, viola and double bass. It also works well with cello instead of bass. I HAVE uploaded a PDF with the Viola, Double Bass, Cello and Piano parts. ALSO, I have uploaded a STRING ORCHESTRA version, with parts, and a MAMBO version for Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, String Bass and 4-part Latin percussion, with parts. You could make a whole concert out this one piece!

Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval.  Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for the south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.Â

Huw Watkin's Minatures for viola and piano were written for violist Simon Rowland-Jones and first performed at the North Norfolk Music Festival in 2009. There are eight short movements. The first has the viola playing short, sometimes angular, sometimes lyrical fragments over simple, slow-moving harmonies on the piano. The fourth and the seventh movements are variations on the first. In between are highly contrasted miniatures: number two is fast and impassioned, while number three is slow and contemplative. The fifth miniature has the viola playing rapid semiquavers over insistent repeated notes in the piano, while the final movement is very slow and serene. (Huw Watkins).

Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. Â

Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This is an arrangement for viola, harpsichord (or piano) and optional cello of Corelli's famous variations on La Folia. The original violin version has been transcribed down a fifth so that it lies on the viola as it would on the violin in the original. The figured bass, a kind of musical shorthand used in the Baroque era, has been realized, that is to say written out in notes rather than numbers in order to make it readable to the average keyboard player. This is a beautiful and virtuosic work, and is a fine addition to the viola repertoire.
