R. Nathaniel Dett - Dance (Juba) for solo piano

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.914175 Composed by R. Nathaniel Dett, Robert Nathaniel Dett. Arranged by Music for a While. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Score. 6 pages. Music for a While #6411603. Published by Music for a While (A0.914175). Dance (Juba) is the fifth piece from Dett’s piano suite In the Bottoms (1913) and was one of his most well known pieces. The work was performed and recorded by Percy Grainger, a fact that was used as marketing on the cover of the 1918 publication by Clayton F. Summy Co., Chicago. About the work, Dett wrote:Juba is a social group-dance that involves stamping on the ground with the foot and following it with two staccato pats of the hands in two-four time. At least one-third of the dancers keep time in this way, while the others dance. Sometimes all will combine together in order to urge on a solo dancer to more frantic (and at the same time more fantastic) endeavours. The band usually consists of a single fiddler perched high on a box or table; who, forgetful of self in the rather hilarious excitement of the hour, does the impossible in the way of double stopping and bowing. A word of warning in regard to the tempo. Do not take it too fast! Much of the dancing in the river bottoms is done with a grace and finish that a Presto tempo never could suggest.R. Nathaniel Dett

Costumes: the instrumentalists may be in costume as well as the performers, if desired. See the title page for suggestions. This piece is meant to be energetic, theatrical, and fun to perform as well as to watch.Program Note Dance of the Wind-Up Toys was composed in April-May 1968, when composer James Siddons was 19 years old. It was inspired by mime performers as well as the mechanical toys common in the early twentieth century.

Piano,Trumpet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.934482 Composed by Jason Taurins. Concert,Contemporary. Score and part. 18 pages. Jason Allan Taurins #3379657. Published by Jason Allan Taurins (A0.934482). Moondances is a set of 6 bagatelles for trumpet and piano. Aimed at the advancing high school or college trumpet player, the six movements can be played in their entirety or in subsets. At 8:30 in length, it would be perfect for a recital! The musical material for much of the piece is based on pieces I wrote for my undergraduate composition courses at Western Michigan University, but reworked and expanded. The fifth and sixth movements are entirely brand new music I composed to round out the suite. Underpinning all movements is a dark and sad feeling, but with rhythmic energy.Movement I, titled Moondrunk, is a reference to Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. It’s an absurd, dissonant, and drunk-feeling dance. Movement II, A Stroll in the Moonlight, shows off the lyrical, expressive, and reflective nature of the trumpet with cup mute. The title is a reference to Hogwarts teacher Professor Lupin, who, within the Harry Potter universe, is a werewolf. The music does not reflect this. In Movement III, Death Dances in the Dark, I experimented with using a highly-chromatic melody which is incorrectly harmonized by D minor chords. The piano and trumpet combine at shocking points in octaves and rhythmic unison to create an unsettling effect. Movement IV, titled Melancholy Memories, is based on a movement of a song cycle I wrote in college. It is at points lovely and unsettling, with a sense of nostalgia.Movement V, titled Dimensions (Pablo’s Dream), is a tribute to my love of the paintings of Pablo Picasso. His cubist works attempted to show multiple perspectives of objects simultaneously. The whole movement is a large palindrome, with smaller palindromes placed in it. To accomplish this musically, I used a twelve-tone row, parallelism in the piano part, and various palindromes in the form. The row is intervallically the same forward and backward. I composed the rhythmic material in the first section stream-of-conscious style, and filled in the pitches. The piano accompaniment is in parallel major chords on each note of the row. The melody at letter H uses the row transposed up a tritone, and parallel minor chords in the accompaniment. The final movement, Chase, shows off the virtuosity of the trumpeter. A common theme of dreams is the chase. These are often quite terrifying, at least in my experience. The back-and-forth nature of chases is explored rhythmically in the opening bars. Phrases of different length and dissonant harmonies are unsettling. A bold cry of terror is heard throughout the movement, harmonized by a chord with a perfect fifth and an augmented fifth. Descending and ascending scales wake up the terrified dreamer, and the music never fully resolves.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1343777 Composed by Alexander Borodin. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 19th Century,Broadway,Classical,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,Musical/Show,World. 264 pages. John Ivor Holland #929284. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1343777). The Polovtsian Dances form an exotic scene at the end of act 2 of Alexander Borodin's opera 'Prince Igor'. The work remained unfinished when the composer died in 1887, although he had worked on it for more than a decade. A performing version was prepared by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov in 1890. Several other versions, or completions, of the opera have been made. The dances are sometimes performed with chorus and last around 11 minutes. Themes from the Polovtsian Dances have been used widely in popular culture, notably the 1953 musical 'Kismet'; the most prominent example is the popular standard Stranger in Paradise, adapted from the Gliding Dance of the Maidens, which opens this piece. This great piece, a staple of the orchestral repertoire, would form a substantial showpiece in any concert and important solos have been cross-cued for smaller ensembles.

Its diversity reflects the small regional and cultural spaces of Switzerland. Influences from other European countries have also shaped this kind of music since the early 19th century. Polka and Mazurka have their roots in Poland, the Scottish in Scotland. The music has been passed on by word of mouth or has been written down in musicians’ notebooks.Between 1940 and 1960, the ethnomusicologist Hanny Christen travelled through Switzerland and collected thousands of melodies from the period between 1800 and 1960. The musicians played or sang in front of her. Some permitted her to write off their own hand-written dance booklets in full. In 1956, Hanny Christen began to record this music with a tape recorder. It is thanks to her that over 12,000 instrumental dance movements of Switzerland and many other pieces of tradition (costumes, biographies, musical instruments etc.) were saved from being forgotten. The instruments used in traditional folk music vary depending on the type of dance and region. Flutes are more or less non-existent. The author would like to fill a gap with this publication. She has therefore adapted one folk dance per canton from the Hanny Christen-collection* for two flutes. The pieces from the cantons of Basel City, Thurgau and Geneva do not come from this source, though. The melodies from the other 23 cantons are taken unchanged from the collection. The second voice was not always composed quite traditional. The melody follows - if possible - a contrapuntal melody of its own and is directed to the flute (difficulty grade 3 +).The editor, Helene Schulthess, is a flutist with a wide repertoire. She lives in Switzerland. She performs as a soloist, makes chamber music and is active as a music teacher. She is involved in various musical projects (www.helene-schulthess.ch).* Swiss Folk Music Collection. The dance music of Switzerland of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Flute Duet Flute - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1179563 By Helene Schulthess. By Helene Schulthess. Arranged by Helene Schulthess. Contest,Country,Festival,Folk,Patriotic,Traditional. Score. 5 pages. Helene Schulthess #779544. Published by Helene Schulthess (A0.1179563). You can purchase all 26 folkdances for 30 $ under this link: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/26-swiss-folk-dances-for-2-flutes-and-accompaniment-digital-sheet-music/21673528The document contents 26 folk dances for two flutes (49 pages) and a score (52 pages)Swiss folk music is very lively. From the estate of Hanny Christen. Edited by Fabian Müller under the auspices of the Society for Folk Music in Switzerland (GVS/SMPS). Music print. Mülirad, Zürich 2002.

Flute Duet Flute - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1182923 By Helene Schulthess. By Helene Schulthess. Arranged by Helene Schulthess. Chamber,Contest,Festival,Folk,Patriotic,Traditional. Score. 8 pages. Helene Schulthess #782677. Published by Helene Schulthess (A0.1182923). From the estate of Hanny Christen. Edited by Fabian Müller under the auspices of the Society for Folk Music in Switzerland (GVS/SMPS). Music print. Mülirad, Zürich 2002.
