In 1986, the Tennessee Dance Theater commissioned the Suite from Oâ€™Connor to be performed as a violin solo at Nashvilleâ€™s Summer Lights Festival. The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological form for which Oâ€™Connor says not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own familyâ€™s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the familyâ€™s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually out West during WWl nearly 300 hundred years later. Oâ€™Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style in which he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, maybe similar to what Oâ€™Connorâ€™s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, reveals music they must of encountered living in early America. Quintet for Bassoon and Strings (2005â€“08) was commissioned by The Commission Projectand is dedicated to Klaus Heymann, in tribute for his invigoration of the classical recordingindustry and his enthusiastic support for the composers of our time.The original conception for the work was devised during an extremely foggy week onNantucket Island, Massachusetts in the summer of 2005. It is music deeply connected to theocean landscape. Throughout the work, the strings often present a fog-like backdrop,through which the bassoonâ€™s color emerges like a lighthouse beaconâ€”lyrical and flexible.The work opens with a series of interlocking, nebulous figurations in the strings thatgradually build in intensity. The bassoon unfolds the workâ€™s basic melodic material in a freesolo that also increases in intensity. At the point of climax, the tempo suddenly slowsdramatically, and a tender, lyrical cantilena emerges. As this music dissolves, a bouncy andenergetic music takes the foreground. It climaxes in a bassoon cadenza. Though the bassoonhas played the leader throughout, this is the first time it is heard unaccompanied. A brief,but vigorous afterglow recalls the opening of the work. The final section emerges out of it: aseries of high, distant harmonics (perhaps harbor buoys) in the strings through which thebassoon sings a final song.

ToccataConcerto for Bass Saxophone and Strings (1999) was commissioned by basssaxophonist Andreas van Zoelen (with generous support from the Broeker Fund forNew Music) and is dedicated with appreciation and admiration to him. Van Zoelen iscommitted to enhancing the very small existing bass saxophone repertoire throughsupporting the creation and performance of new works. The subtitle of the firstmovement (...a continuum of dreams...) could be seen as a sort of subtitle for theentire work that sets the mood and provides unification for the entire piece. The firstmovement is a slow and ethereal chaconne. The strings and the saxophone interact invarious ways throughout this movement in non-traditional form. There are actuallytwo ground bass themes; one is introduced at the beginning with pizzicato stringsbut soon moves to the background (although it is almost always present). The secondis presented near the end of the work and eventually the two are combined. Theinterval of an augmented fourth (tritone) has special use throughout the movementas a variety of themes and motifs are transformed throughout. The second movementis a cadenza for the unaccompanied saxophone. The third movement is a fast andwild toccata. The saxophone plays almost without rest for the entire movement. Amiddle section recalls the theme of augmented fourths from the first movement.Heavy use is made of pizzicato strings. The saxophone part for this movement ishighly virtuosic, exploring the full possibilities and range of the instrument.This is the score and solo part only. The parts are on rental from the publisher.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792126). The Adagio in G minor for Trombone and String Quartet is a wonderful arrangement of the work attributed to Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751). The work is about 7 minutes in length for advanced performers.Below is a short article about the Adagio by the arranger, Sean F. Biehn:There is much controversy as to who wrote the Adagio for Strings in G minor and whether it was a stolen idea or embellished from a piece of a manuscript. The piece is considered to be a fragment of Tomaso Albinoni's (1671-1751) original manuscript with a few measures of the melodic material and the basso continuo. During World War II, the bombings of Dresdon, which is where the Saxon State Library resided, was destroyed and Remo Giazotto (1910-1998) evacuated most of its documents, being that he was a musicologist-and an Albinoni biographer. Giazotto took the fragment of manuscript and completed what he thought would be the completed piece which in turn makes his completed piece an original composition. In 1958, Giazotto finalized the piece under the title of Adagio in G minor for Strings and Organ, on Two Thematic Ideas and on a Figured Bass by Tomaso Albinoni. Remo Giazotto never shared the manuscript and after his death in 1998, there has never been a record of the missing manuscript fragment. To this day, the string ensemble with organ is popularly performed. There have been numerous and recent alterations in instrumentation for this piece due to the fact that other soloists wanted to perform the beautiful piece. This particular version of the piece contains a string quartet accompanying a trombone soloist.

I wrote Fantasy in the late spring of 2019. Before I could arrange a premier, the COVID-19 pandemic set in and everything stopped. I finally had the joy of premiering the piece on December 8, 2021, with my home team the Newport Symphony in Newport, Oregon, with Adam Flatt conducting. The audience was on their feet for both the matinee and the evening performances, so I guess they liked it! The piece is melodic, rhythmic, tonal, and just plain fun to play. It goes together easily. Each movement is about five and a half minutes, total play time about 17 minutes. It is appropriate for advanced student groups as well as professional groups. The first movement, Busy Day (Presto), makes repeated use of a four-note motif (G-F-A-D) and is a driving non-stop articulated melody. The second movement, Lullabye (Andante), opens and closes with the flute playing a brief cadenza, floating above an ambiguous chord in the strings. The bulk of the movement is a dovetailed hypnotic ostinato in the strings with a gentle rocking motion, and the simple flute melody above. The third movement, Wild Dreams (Presto), should be exactly that, wild and raucous, with heavy aggressive accents as indicated.For additional notes, see p. 2 of the PDF.The Youtube link above (Watch) is a recording I made at home in 2020 with my computer playing the string parts.
