Born in Ankara in 1976, Metin Yilmaz started his formal musical education at the Bilkent University, Department of Musical Composition in the Faculty of Performing Arts. He studied with Hatira Ahmetli on “Taniyev’s Harmony and Musical Pedogogyâ€. He continued his musical studies with Arif Melikov in Baku Music Academy following a special invitation. He performed in four concerts which included his own compositions that were broadcasted on Russian NTV, Azerbaijan State Televisions. He participated in Rostropovitch’s musicality and instrumental composition master classes. He pariticipated in seminars along with Russian and Iranian composers in International Zagulba Composition Festival that took place in Baku. His interviews from these seminars were published in various mediums. Some of his pianoworks were represented in various concerts and recorded by known pianist Yuri Savetskin. He completed his composition education in Turkey with Aydın Azimov in Mersin University State Conservatorium and graduated in the first place. Soon after his graduation he perfırmed and conducted his own piano concerto “SARI†with Mersin Youth Symphony Orchestra. While working as an academic instructor in Çukurova State Conservatorium he also instructed piano in Mersin Fine Arts High School. Later he instructed in Baskent State Conservatorium. His arrangements and compositions are performed in Antalya, Bodrum and Ankara by Baskent University Academic Orchestra. He continued his master’s and artistic proficiency in Baku Music Academy with Arif Melikov and in Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatorium with Igor Dranov. His composition “Geveze†(Babbler) was deemed worthy for the first place in Yamaha International Composition Competition and was performed in America, Germany, Italy and China. He participated and performed in various concerts and organizations in Ankara, Baku and Tiblisi Jazz Festivals and jazz Clubs and started Babel Project music community that arranged concerts. The modal jazz and Turkish music arrangements draw attention and his workshops inspired many young jazz musicians. He composed and arranged documentary and titles compositions that were broadcasted on Turkish National Radio and Television and other broadcasting institutions. He thought Music Theory & Culture and participated in foundation of Atilim University Department of Jazz. He thought in Yildirim Beyazıt University State Conservatorium. He broadcasted “HAFIZAMDAKI MAKAMLAR†in Turkish National Television that explored music of architecture. He is the board chairman of Musical Therapy Education and Research Association and general director of School of Art Machine that evolved into Babel Project Music Ltd. His musical compositions fuse elements of traditional, contemporary and classical music styles in a natural sense of integrity blended with mature emotional expressiveness.

Flowers For Dorothy is a beautiful jazz waltz (in lead-sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International, performed by Mark Massey and his trio (Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums). In the vein of great jazz waltzes like Someday My Prince Will come, Emily, and Waltz for Debby.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. API featured nine of Mark's original jazz compositions--including Flowers for Dorothy, offered here--inspired by his musical excursions around the globe, along with Eric Stiller (bass) and Aldo Bentivegna (drums), and guest artists Alex Acuña, percussion (Weather Report), Justo Almario, flute (Mongo Santamaria), Plas Johnson, tenor sax (The Pink Panther Theme), Bob Mintzer, soprano sax (The Yellow Jackets), and Ron Stout, flugelhorn, More recently, Mark has been recording his iconic Jazz Thoughts for the Day albums of original jazz improvisional compositions for each day of the year. Three Piano Pieces for Shira is a gift for my friends Matthew and Sarah's daughter, Whitney. I was thinking about how much I’d love to teach her about music someday and got into listening to piano pieces written for young musicians that, though easier to play, don’t compromise artistically. The Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, Schubert’s and Tchaikovsky’s Albums for the Young, and Stravinsky’s Les cinq doigts (a personal favorite) were inspirations for my work here.Though these three pieces are a probably a little tough for a two year old, and I have no idea if she’ll ever take up piano, I do hope that other young musicians will be able to get something out of them. They may be a good way to introduce advanced students to some of the techniques commonly used in modern music, such as mixed or phasing meters and spatial notation.In any case I hope that Whitney enjoys listening. I enjoyed writing them.

Our edition here removes many musical indications and durational obscurities, and leaves the original notes and the dynamics, the two most important aspects of any score for teaching purposes, especially for the recreational players, who make up the vast majority of most piano students. Some chords respelled, some notes assigned to the opposite hand. Pedaling is assumed rather than written durationally. Print these single-sided, and you'll get them all on a single-page, or two pages facing. Musical sample is MOTHER, which we thought appropriate! MBB.
