But before complacency set ins, the real fireworks start with a virtuosic but very playable conclusion ending in a furious burst. Composer’s comments:Fire is part of the Elements Suite and recording created during a visit to the Pacific Northwest, where the natural world exhibits an unusual intensity and the elements are quite prominently display. With this music I hope to capture the contrasts between the four elements as well as the dual natures within each of them.  Water, for example, is both a source of life and potentially dangerous.  Air is both breath and wind.  Fire comforts or burns.  Only Earth seemed to me continuous and dependable.

With this work, the listener could wander and experience life around a Greek island. In the beginning, a Greek dance unfolds that develops into a faint prayer; shortly after, a waltz as a distant memory surfaces. The first theme of the work reappears to end the work in a triumphal and frenzy happy fiesta. The idea of the work came after a suggestion by Panos Liaropoulos to compose a string quartet for the summer of 2015. ‘Aegean Fire’ had its premiere in Greece by L’Anima string quartet and shortly after in Boston in February 2016. The Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra under Francisco Noya presented the orchestral version ‘Aegean Fire Magnus’ in its American premiere in 2016 at Jordan Hall in Boston..

Sung by the dwsChoraleThule, the period of Cosmography (and The Andalusian merchant) - a madrigal for 6 voices by Thomas Weelkes Interpretation: Iceland (it means Iceland here, since Hecla (Hekla) is mentioned, although Thule does now refer to other distant places), the period (ie full stop) of mapmaking (ie the end of the known world) boasts of its volcano Hecla, whose sulphurous fire melts the ice and thaws the sky Etna's flames on Sicily are no higher than this (this is poetic licence, Etna is actually higher than Hecla!) These things are amazing but not as amazing as me because I can be both cold and hot, with fear and with love The second verse is fairly self explanatory, although there is debate as to whether Fogo (= fire in Portuguese) refers to the volcano in Cape Verde (off Senegal) or to Tierra del Fuego. I would vote for Cape Verde since the harmony, when referring to Fogo, is probably one of the most chromatic pieces of writing in the madrigal repertoire and is a marvellous depiction of the lava flowing down a volcano.

Dark December: Ignis Dei (2002) was commissioned by Maurice and Amy Katz and was written forand is dedicated to Non Sequitur. It is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, vibraphone, and piano, andis subtitled “processional doubles for mixed sextet.†(The word “doubles†is used in the old sense of“variations.â€)The source material for the composition is the composer's original hymn tune DOLMEN CREEK(2002), whose text by Margaret Clarkson (Burn in Me, Fire of God) provides the Ignis Dei of thetitle and poetic conception. The poetic conception is one of an emergence of a single inner flame, amida dark landscape.The tune is never heard in its full or straightforward form – instead it is always heard in fragment ortransformation. Its formal structure also provides the dimensions and structures of the four sections.Formally, the work is cast in a single movement as a series of three processionals plus a finalglorification-postlude. The conception of the work is ritualistic in tone, and pushes forward towardsthe end.The opening processional (for the entire sextet) is very slow and distant and sets out transformations ofthe hymn tune in its most abstruse form. The second processional (for violin, cello, and vibraphone) isslightly faster and features an active and independent vibraphone part over a cortege in the two strings.The third processional (for flute, clarinet, and piano) is quick and nimble as gestures and material arepassed between the two winds, and the piano provides commentary and allusions. In this processional, afragment of the hymn is heard in its most clear form. The final glorification-postlude brings the entireensemble together again in a vibrant coda of busy activity.Carson

In this scene, the blaze has passed and we are witness to the devastation left behind. There is a powerful sense of loss in the music as the melody rises and falls amidst the rich chords of harmony…the distant memory of what was once a vibrant wood teeming with with life. Now all that is left is ash and smoldering ember. As the piece comes to a close, one can hear the mournful cry of a bird in the right hand as the smoke rises from the barren landscape.

The piece tries to musically depict the experience of a traveler who witnesses a pagan ritual. The strange ceremony takes place around a bonfire at a cold and distant mountain settlement. Masked people burst into a frenzy of dance and ecstatic priests pray to their gods. As the ritual progresses, the traveler’s mind becomes misty. Soon he transcends reality and enters a strange world-a world of dreams, a world of fantasy. There he discovers hidden spiritual treasures that will change his life forever. Finally, his spirit gets pulled back into his body while the natives continue their dance and end the ritual. The piece combines heterophonic dance elements (representing the secular part of the ritual) with strict contrapuntal writing, including a double canon (representing transcendence to the spiritual world).Cover Design - Dimitris I. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised.
