Other than reading and playing in the key of A major, there are few challenges in this piece: the rhythm consists of quarter, eighth, and half notes, the only accidental is D sharp. Eighth note patterns are scale fragments, ascending in the left hand, descending in the right hand. When the hands move, it is along with the melodic pattern. While most measures have eighth notes, they never happen in both hands at the same time. The most difficult aspect is counterpoint in Baroque style: quarter notes are to be played staccato, eight notes legato, usually both at the same time. An excellent preparation for this Gavotte would be the Gavotte in D major by James Hook: it trains counterpoint playing but the hands never move. ISBN 9790570484560.The Wounded Angel (2013) is written for piccolo, two flutes, alto flute and bass flute, and is dedicated to Christine Turellier, a professor of flute at the Lille Conservatory of Music (France) where the work was premiered. These pieces were inspired by a painting entitled The Wounded Angel (1967) by the visionary British artist Cecil Collins (1908-1990). His works have been the basis for a number of D'Angelo's compositions. For example, one of his latest pieces for orchestra takes its inspiration from Collins' painting The Angel of the Flowing Light (1968). In his extensive output the artist often used angels and fools as symbols of purity and wisdom. In the painting, the earthbound, winged, wounded angel is lying on its side with its eyes closed. Its colours blend in with the purplish colours of the earth. In the distance is a mountain shaped like a pyramid while the sky is filled with shades of orange. Just at the point where the mountain meets the bleak landscape we see the sun just rising. This angel has been injured and fallen to Earth and in its distress has to find a way of healing itself and ascending to its spiritual home. In this highly impressionistic piece the piccolo stands for the wounded angel. It has a three note motif and its wound is suggested by the semitone difference of the second note each time the motif is repeated. The piece is a voyage through all the states of mind the angel experiences. For example, there are moments of contemplation and peace where the alto and bass flutes play rocking rhythms in open fifths. The final bars of The Wounded Angel portray the gentle power of the angel to heal itself and return to the heavens. Here, following the motif of the gently rocking rhythms the piccolo plays two ascending fourths leading to a G sharp which has its resolution in the angels keynote A.

In this, the opera's most famous aria (and one of the most popular works in the soprano repertoire, which many critics agree Maria Callas owned), Butterfly says that one beautiful day, they will see a puff of smoke on the far horizon. Then a ship will appear and enter the harbour. She will not go down to meet him but will wait on the hill for him to come. After a long time, she will see in the far distance a man beginning the walk out of the city and up the hill. When he arrives, he will call Butterfly from a distance, but she will not answer, partly for fun and partly not to die from the excitement of the first meeting. Then he will speak the names he used to call her: Little one. Dear wife. Orange blossom. Butterfly promises Suzuki that this will happen. Suzuki departs, as Sharpless and Goro arrive in the garden.This arrangement is playable by either SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet. The duration is ca. 4:05. I made this chart back in the 1980's when I was studying orchestration & Arranging under the late and great Lt. Col. Trevor Sharpe. The soundtrack was the fourth of the series to be composed by John Barry. He tried to incorporate the elegance of the Oriental sound with Japanese music-inspired tracks. The theme song, You Only Live Twice, was composed by Barry and lyricist Leslie Bricusse, and sung by Nancy Sinatra after her father Frank Sinatra passed on the opportunity. Nancy Sinatra was reported to be very nervous while recording – first she wanted to leave the studio; then she claimed to sometimes sound like Minnie Mouse.[36] Barry declared that the final song uses 25 different takes. There are two versions of the song You Only Live Twice, sung by Nancy Sinatra, one directly from the movie soundtrack, and a second one for record release arranged by Billy Strange.[citation needed] The movie soundtrack song is widely recognised for its striking opening bars and oriental flavour, and was far more popular on radio. The record release reached No. 44 on the Billboard charts in the US, and No. 11 in the UK. Both versions of the title song are available on CD. A different title song was originally recorded by Julie Rogers, but eventually discarded. Only two lines from that version were kept in the final lyrics, and the orchestral part was changed to fit Sinatra's vocal range. Rogers' version only appeared in a James Bond 30th Anniversary CD, with no singer credit. In the 1990s, an alternative example of a possible theme song (also called You Only Live Twice and sung by Lorraine Chandler) was discovered in the vaults of RCA Records. It became a very popular track with followers of the Northern soul scene (Chandler was well known for her high-quality soul output on RCA) and can be found on several RCA soul compilations.
